First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Hello all , so ive just recently began my first grow and let me tell you, its fuckin awesomeeeee. Anyways let me tell you a bit about the set up.
I lined a cardboard box with mylar then for an exhaust fan i used my friends old xbox360 fan(RRoD took it), and am currently using 3 26w CFL's. You can kind of see the set up in some of the 8th day pictures, and right here...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...9100037-01.jpg
(its also better sealed to stop light from escaping most of the time)
As for the goodies, i picked up a few clones from a local dispensary; Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica. Both of them came with roots and took pretty well to the set up. I have them in 8" pots with some FFOF soil and have already began the LST process. I let them settle in for a couple days but then started out and they just kept going :hello:
Alright so to get everyone caught up here we go...
I picked up the clones on 1/18 and i believe the Mr. NG was cloned on 12/20 and the other on 12/24 so its a little behind but its all good :)
ive been keeping up with the pictures so heres the process of it all so far...(ps and sorry all i have is a camera phone for right now)

So on the 5th day i decided to give them a little water....that was a mistake ha. They got a little Droopy and on the Mr. Nice Guy she started to develop some yellow spots on one of the leaves, everything has basically recovered except that so if someone knows whats going on with this i would love to hear :D. There is a close up of it on the top part of the 3rd image from this day.

I do have a couple quick questions though....
First, on the Mr. nice guy (tall and skinny one), there are alot of droopy leaves towards the bottom but the ones at the top are nice and perky, o and the ones on the bushier one also look to be maybe shriveling a bit could that be to little water, maybe to much? anyways should i be worried about that?
And my next question might even be related to the first, i keep hearing about having the humidity at like 50% but currently mine is only at 20% so could this be the reason they might be lookin a little funky? And if so what would be the best way to fix it for as cheap as possible??
O and lastly, about how much should i be watering them at this point??
Anyways im lovin this new hobby of mine and just want to keep learning so if anyone has any tips or tricks or words of advice i would loveeeee to hear it.
ill keep updating in later posts....NOW LET THE JOURNEY COMMENCE!!! o and happy smoking :rastasmoke:
Any advice would be awesomeeeee :D

The humidity will be fine. The plants will take in any extra water they need through the roots. This is what I've been told. Plenty of people grow in an arid/semi-arid climate with excellent results. The low humidity will be great for flowering and will eliminate problems with mold/fungus...
Get a cheap water meter from any hardware store garden section. You can find them for like $7. It's invaluable for a beginner... until you get to know how the plants grow better.

thanks for such a fast rely, it did some good reassuring haha. anyways i was curious about this water meter you mentioned....whats the main purpose of the meter? does it measure the amount of water in the soil, or the ph of one or the other or what??

First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
So alot has happened since i last updated this thing, what just happened well let me tell you. I took this 'half a cup of water every other day' advice that i got from a guy at GC and that turned into a watering disaster, one of my plants died, the Mr. Nice Guy, RIP. But the Afghanica came back to life with a good watering so it wasnt a complete loss. Let me know if there is anything i could do to kick start this guy, should i start using the foxfarm nutes? i was planning on it but my god damn financial aid hasnt come in so ive had to hault my plans for a little bit.
Anyways leave me some comments on what i should be doing
p.s.- with the new funds coming in im gonna go pick up another clone and make a rubbermaid set up which seems alot more reliable.
thanks yall

I think im finally starting to get the hang of this thing  After i figured out how to water it, things really started turning around. I watched this video called SeeMore Buds and in the cfl section he has this great watering tip and i tried it, and it worked great. The amazing rule was this...Water 1/3 the volume of the pot your using, then once it gets dry you just do it again, im sure once it gets bigger youll be watering it more often but this seems like a pretty legit way to do it, am i right?? Anyways heres a few picture of the recoveree
and as always leave me any advice or comments or whatever, peaceee :hippy:

So the plant is really doin great, i also picked her up a few presents today. Im gonna transplant her into a 3 gallon pot and start her off with some brand new FF Grow Big. I was thinkin 1/4 teaspoon in a gallon of water to start things off... does that sound like a good way to start her off in her new home? Also i tied down my first side branch so im thinkin by transplant time we're gonna be in even better shape. My only concerns are that some of the leaves are still a little droopy and are starting to turn a lighter shade of green. im gonna do some research but if you want to look at the picture and give me your opinion that would be great:thumbsup:

First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
So i finally did it, i got the funds in and was able to get her a 3 gallon pot and some FF Grow Big, gave her 1/4 teaspoon in a gallon of water. I changed the lights around. now i just have 3 27w 6500k CFL's and a lower one that i had lyin around. I also made a couple refelctors, out of some rolling rock cans, yea in cans... i didnt believe it at first either haha. Then i raised it back up pretty close to the lights, so we shall see how she takes to all of these new changes.
And if you have any comments or advice or anything pleaseeeeeee share with me

Hey, sorry I didn't see this question. Yeah, it's just a moisture probe. It looks like a long thin metal tube with a little meter attached to the end with a needle that points to DRY, MOIST, or WET...
It's really helpful in getting the feel for things when you start out. You can get 'em at Ace, Home Depot, probably Wallyworld. Just go to the garden section and ask for a moisture probe or something.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
you transplanted wayy to early. you are at high risk of root rot. dont water like you you have been 1/3 of the pot size. your roots arnt even developed enough to reach that deep bottom yet and when you give that 3 gallon pot water most of it is going to be a mucky mess in the bottom. causing rot and nappy shit. since you already transplanted it only give it a few cups of water untill you have established a good root system and the way to check that out is to tip it upsidedown and lift off the pot to see if there are any roots. oh and hey dont waste your money on those metal moister probes. they will not measure any kind of soils ph accurately. as for checking the moister content of the plant, it is easy as lifting a pot of dirt and feeling if its heavy or light(like the day you put fresh dirt in). pretty simple huh?

That seems like a lot of water to me, especially if you're using CFLs. For reference, I water with about 0.5 - 0.75 gallons and I'm in a 5 gallon container. That is 1/10th the volume of water... not 1/3!
Get the water meter and it'll help you gauge when to water so you aren't just shooting in the dark. It looks to me like you still may have some watering stress! I'm not sure what growth looks like under CFLs though..
Also, it looks to me like you maybe transplanted too soon. I couldn't really judge the size of your original containers in the pictures... but that plant now looks extremely small in that large pot. This might make it a bit more difficult to water correctly since the roots haven't filled the pot and you'll have wet spots. Hopefully, someone else will chime in. I don't think you'll want to fully saturate the pot every watering at this point. I probably stop watering before you get runoff... and then water to runoff maybe every 2nd or 3rd watering until it grows into the pot?
Hope this helps. I'm not extremely experienced but that's what I've seen work.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
with that big ass pot i wouldnt let it run-off for a while. your going to get some wonky ph readings. check out my mothers, they are in half gallon pots! but of course if they went into flowering then a transplant is needed.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Alright first off thanks for the support guys haha. Anyways heres my justification for doing things this way... The plant is over a month and a half old for 1. for 2, its just a bushy ass plant, it looks small but theres alot jammed in there, i have it tied down like 5-6 times. And 3, I watched the second video of the See More Buds series where they have the 6 gardeners and shit, seems pretty legit. The guy plants a clone with baby ass roots into a 3 gallon and does basically what i did and said that you want to saturate the soil to give the roots a reason to go to the bottom, if your just doing a couple cups a day then they wouldnt go down very far. It seems a little ridiculous but this guy got some results so hopefully this works and if not then hopefully we still have something to work with haha. Anyways thanks for the help guys, ill keep you updated
o and btw i do infact have a moisture/ph meter comin in the mail, should be here in the next few days i hope :wtf:
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Damn, 1.5 months! How tall is that plant?
My plants are also 1.5 months and they're like 2-3 ft tall and growing beautiful buds.
I would say start over and get an HID light. You can have another clone that size in about 1 week and then you'll eliminate these problems. You'd actually be further along in a few weeks.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
yea im kinda disappointed as well but im learnin slowly haha. The plant with everything tied down is like 6 inches or so tall with everything tied down. I'll probably take a clone from this guy in a little bit and then we'll push forward. Anyways i got my moisture meter in the mail so we'll see how that helps in the fext few days. And again thanks for all your help guys
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Yeah, it'll be good experience for sure!
The growth rate just seems really slow for it to be worth your time and effort. I'm not a fan of fluorescents/CFLs really, but I guess they do have their place. Is an HID light totally out of the question for you right now? Even if you could get like a 250 or 400W, I think you'd be astonished at the difference in growth rate.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
I havent really looked to much into them....could you give me some insight as to how much they are and how the set up process goes?? And i think the growth process has been slacking cuz i didnt really have a good watering schedule for them which is why i think i lost the previous one and this one got like a stunted growth or something.
thanks a bunch!
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Sure, check out some good hydroponic/garden centers online. There are several. I like HTG Supply. Check them out... just google and you'll find them.
HTG has a 250W or a 400W for about $120. That's a pretty good deal. With a 250W light you could probably yield 3-4oz if you got your watering down ;) And it will take you less time than CFLs and probably be higher quality. You can even get a 175W if that's too much for you, but I think it's better to go bigger if you can... you may want to expand in the future.
Do you know about lighting at all? Check some of the FAQs on here. Most use either High-pressure sodium (HPS) or Metal Halide (MH) HID lighting. MH is good for veg, whereas HPS is better for flowering. I've seen great success for people who use HPS all the way through! So, either get an HPS or get an HPS/MH convertible ballast (which is $50 more and you'll also need a second bulb).
With an HID you'll get more heat since you'll be running more wattage... so you'll also have to think about ventilation and cooling. Just a strong fan blowing between the lights and the plants would probably do it when you're talking a 250W.
Good luck! Read the lighting FAQs. You know if you have the scratch you could just go pick up an HPS and put that over your existing plant and watch things pick up.
Also, as far as watering goes throw the schedules out the window! The plants water needs are quickly changing as it grows so as soon as one watering schedule seems routine... the plant has grown enough to require more. The best thing you can do it use your moisture meter and learn how a dry/moist/wet pot feels. It is going to be difficult to keep ideal waterings until the plant grows into that pot.... which may be awhile unless you upgrade to the HIDs.

First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Yea ive mostly just researched the CFL route cuz i'm on a budget but ill definately be putting this moisture meter to work. Ill keep posting updates as they come, and who knows maybe ill come out on top
And again thanks for the help :rastasmoke:

First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Well, alot has happened since the transplant...alot of good things that is  The whole plant looks healthier, its muchh bigger, and theres new growth everywhereeee So check out the progress...

And then in the next pictures you might just notice my brand spankin new grow box :D
They had a bomb sale at home depot for rubbermaids for like 4 bucks a piece so i grabbed two 18 gal's and some more CFL's for under 10 bucks I then purchased a 120 mm fan for another ten but this thing is sickkk. So here are some pictures of the new set up, we call it the hulk, im sure you can figure out why

So i'd say overall things are looking spectacularrrr. I was pondering on upping the nutes for the next watering, up to a half a tsp. Would that be cool or should i wait?, I'm not seeing any nute burn and it will probably be atleast a week in between waterings if not more(i can now tell with my fancy new 6 dollar moisture/ph meter :D).
Anywayssss let me hear your thoughts and opinions, im all ears

Not even half a gram per watt. If you're LST'ing plants you think that's unreasonable?

Quick update.... So i gave her another gallon but this time with half a tsp of Grow big(twice as much as the last time), like 2 days ago and she's already showin even more progress. Here's a couple shots of her over the past 2-3 days or so:

If i were you id only water when the plant needs it. Water it when the pot is light. Let the plant get dry sometime, i think you will find that your plant grows faster. Iv found that mine grow better when they are dry from time to time, but this is what worked for me. I think that more people over water then under water. People want to over love there plants.
Good luck:rasta:

First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
Here's another little update, things are lookin great :D
I was also planning on switchin her into flowering here within the next couple days, also i was gonna take a clipping so i get another one going. I had a few questions concerning the two. One would be, can i take a clone and then switch her into flowering pretty much right away or should i let her heal up a bit before hand? And also, im gonna have to water within the next couple days, should i just start the blooming nutes then or wait a little bit into the cycle to do that?
And any other advice or words of wisdom pertaining to the siwtching into flowering process would be greattt:thumbsup:
peace yalll:hippy:
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
So i just took two clones from her and i bought 4 soft white 100w cfl's(equivalent) and the only thing holding me back from switching to flowering is the nutrient situation...what kind of nutes should i use and when should i use them? Im fine with sticking with FF but if i could get something cheaper that would be great. And do you need the two, big bloom and tiger bloom? or does one just do something better or what?
Any advice would be great, i wanna get her flowerin ASAP!!!
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
You Are going to want to flush the grow nutrients, (higher in n than p or k) before you choose to flower her. The extra nitrogen can slow the flowering. The Big bloom is essentially the organics, micro and macronutrients. The tiger bloom is the main flower formula. GH has a simple but good 3 part system. Keep at it.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
So are both of them essential or would i be able to skate by with one or the other???

I am running aeroponics now but i would use them both in soil. I just use the tiger bloom in aero. Go light till you get used to them.
-
First Grow-Grow Box-CFL's-Mr. Nice Guy and Afghanica
THE SETUP: DWC/Aeroponic hybrid system w/ 5 in pots (8 plants), 400w hps/hallide conversion light on adjustable light hangers, and I'm growing ice strain feminized from holland. Using botanicare CNS17 premium nutes, with Bontanicare Karma (catalyst, enzymes, beneficials) I have two 5" circular airstones being pushed by a 2800cc air pump, and 180 gpm water pump. Using Sure To Grow (STG) grow 1.5" cubes and Hydroton. Grow room is 4x5x8 (20 square feet or 2 sq meters.) Room is a walk in closet w/ a standard swing door. I sealed the sides and top for seepage. Room is completely lined with Mylar (2mm) on all walls and ceiling. Floor is carpented lined with tempered glass on top. Using Alen airpurifier, and a humidifier or dehumidifier if needed. 20" box fan for circulation.
---
I see time after time on these sites that people never give the details of their setup and then get asked over and over what they are using in order to answer their question(s). So I don't think I left out anything.
-
Anyway, the questions are....
How many plants do you think I can grow in this room with the 400w hps? Do I need an additional lights for another 8 or 12 plants in the confined space? How much does the mylar assist in reflecting light to the lower branches once the plants beging to grow higher? (I plan to veg to 24"-36" before flowering) I'd like to expect 2lbs from each 8 plant DWC/Aeroponic set up; is this unreasonable? (ICE strain is a Northern lights/Afghan cross est 550-650 g/m2)
Also considering using a 2x5x8 (10 sq ft) porch closet as an auxillary grow room. Will one 400hps/hallide conversion be enough for this confined space w/ 8-12 plants? How much will aspiration per plant raise the humidity at 75F?
I'm not new to growing, but new to cannabis. I'm growing for sale. Thanks for you advice.
If I forgot something then let me know. thanks agian.

I see time after time on these sites that people never give the details of their setup and then get asked over and over what they are using in order to answer their question(s). So I don't think I left out anything.

The flowering stage has been going for a few days now and i can already see a difference :D
Ive got a few questions thought....
First on is that there are alot of leaves that dont seem to be getting any light and not really having a purpose so should i prune them or just let them chill and if they fall off then they fall off. I'd like to clean it up a bit cuz theres just a mess of leaves.... not that thats necessarily a bad thing
Anyways leave me some feedback and shit:rastasmoke:

Lookn good. Keep the leaves. Nice and green. Just fold the bigger fans under the growing tips. Keep the tips exposed to keep all of the branches growing evenly. The leaves are where the plants produce chlorophyl and store sugars. Keep it up!

I found a timer at walmart again, i should have just sprung for the 8 dollar one the first time haha. Either way it works and im thinkin im gonna try and return the old one because walmart needs to be knocked down a notch haha:thumbsup:
Anyways, things are lookin great. She grew up into the light a little bit and burned a few leaves but i tied it down so hopefully it wont happen for another while but we shall see...
And also the clones i took 11 days ago still havent rooted :/ they're still green but no roots. I dont have a heating mat so does that mean they wont root or will it just take longer??
Thanks and let me know what you think :hippy:
(ps thanks for the timer help anyways brainy)
