Nanotech and the end of the world.

Basically, nanotechnology is he use of microscopic robots to manipulate objects on a molecular scale. Also, scientists say that these "nanobots" or nanites could be given the ability to self-replicate. This means that, theorietically, a swarm of nanites could exponentially expand, consuming all life on Earth. Just in case you were wondering, nanites run on carbon, what all life is made out of. That means, to self-replicate, they must consume carbon.

Nanites already exist, but they do not have the self-replication yet. It would be even worse if they were implanted with some kind of collective A.I.

However, if the nanites do not kill all life on Earth, here are some positive things that can come out of this:


Cures for almost all disease

Incredibly cheap and efficient manufacturing.

Overwhelming military might for the United States (cause we will be the first to figure it out :D )

Construction of a space elevator, which connects from a platform in the pacific to an international space station in orbit.

Fabrication of foodstuffs from raw materials like carbon.

Fabrication of pretty much any other substance.

Pretty much anything else that can be accomplished by the mass-scale altering of molecular structures.


To me, this would be the most important technological advancement in human history, and potentially more deadly than nukes.

Ah the so-called Grey Goo Scenario. Little molecular nanorobots tearing apart the Earth molecule by molecule, replicating themselves until the entire Earth is covered with nothing but a sludge of nano 'bots. Of course, this scenario is highly unlikely. These things require energy to work, and energy is not freely available. Freeze them, and they stop working; heat them up enough and they're permanently destroyed They would, therefore, be fairly easy to control. I've got more important things to worry about. Heh.

BUT, Nanotechnology could never destroy or control earth no technology could. You see the Sun sends out these Huge things called Solar Flares which tend to electromagnetically fry massive amounts of technology on earth. Well your all screwed. See the nano's buit robots. The robots kill all the humans except a ellite squad of super humans. These super humans are then killed my robots. But a robot goes back in time to the ninetees and meets a younger form of me. The robot then fights another robot and both of them die. I find out that when i was younger a robot in a human for tried to kill my mom. Then when i was twenty another robot came to kill me and they sant another robot to save me. They are incredibly expensive and do not have the ability to self replicate. In fact they are nothing more than sensors, really. But they still are a microscopic machine with a microscopic microchip. It seems liek science fiction now, but so was space flight in the 40's. Kombucha, I justy threw that AI thing in for the hell of it. The first nanos will just have pre-programmed tasts set into thier systems. However, who knows what will happen hundreds of years down the road.

One application of nanites that I didn't say before woudl be the ability to war a kind of nanite exoskeleton. The swarm of nanos would enter your bloodstream and coat you skin. Basically, a person with an advanced nanoskeleton would be able to:

Breathe underwater
Super-strenght, super speed, super reflexes
Active camoflage (like a chameleon)
Resistant to extreme heat and cold
Bullet-proof
Augmentation of the healing process


Also if they could truly figure out the brain, nanites could augment brain activity, exponentially increasing brain power.

By the way, I'm not just pulling this out my ass. There was a big feature on the history channel about it.

lol, you just listed the augs from 'Deus Ex' (good game!), what i meant by 'they don't exist', to paraphrase myself, is that they are not advanced in the way that you describe, and most likely won't be. plus, i don't quite understand what you mean when you say that the can take on pretty much any charicteristic or function needed. could they change between functions? would they need some sort of AI? could they take on ANY role? how would active camo work? wouldn't they need to have some kind of colour canging device, I mean, this is some crazy shit! i guess they're only atoms in size, but how do you manipulate a few atoms? FOR FUCKS SAKE! Nanotechnology does exist, yes, but they are just pissy little pieces of shit that don't do anything amazing. They can't give you super powers or anything like that, and they aren't that small yet. It's not magic, you would actually have to fit circuitry into them somewhere. Not only that, but smaller things are harder to manufacture, if we can't do something with technology of any size, we certainly can't do it with nanotechnology, get a grip, and think about what you are posting. I'm quite happy to believe theories like this if they are plausible, but this is not. It is IMPOSSIBLE. If you stopped to think about it you would realise that.
