Man Dies After Choking on Bag of Pot During Arrest

Saturday, December 12, 2009

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. â?? Bay County deputies say a 23-year-old man who was shocked with a stun gun died after choking on a large bag of marijuana during an attempted arrest.

According to The News Herald, Andrew Grande ran from deputies who responded to the scene of a reported physical disturbance early Friday morning. Grande was later confronted by the investigators, who saw him try to put something in his mouth while he struggled with them.

Grande broke free from the deputies, who had managed to put one handcuff over his wrist. Authorities then used the stun gun.

After Grande was shocked, deputies noticed that he appeared to be choking. They couldn't clear his throat with the Heimlich maneuver. Grande was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is fucked up that they stunned him even though they KNEW he had put something in his mouth. But also, trying to swallow a large bag of marijuana is not a very good idea.

Well, we all know that the cannabis wouldn't have killed him. Just goes to prove the insanity of the cannabis prohibition. A needless life lost due to an immoral. lazy, foot dragging electorate. I can only wonder when our elected officials will do the will of the people rather then keep the drug war inflamed. Tased over mj, the cops should be the one's going down also. But you can rest assured they will remain cops after being slapped on the wrist. :mad:

Im going to be honest here, That sucks about dying. But sounds like general stupidity. Kinda warns me to not try to eat weed in order to not go to jail b/c that is your possible outcome.

Yes this is tragic but I agree with Cannamanibus, the small amount of weed was probably a lesser charge than some type domestic charges.

The cops should be arrested for murder.

I don't know about murder, but seeing as they are trained in more ways than one, I.E. more than the heimlich, to save a choking person. I feel that they should be charged with neglect to save a life.

The guy wasn't "Tased over mj" (as Gyski stated). He was a suspect that resisted arrest, ran from the cops, attempted to destroy evidence, AND PURPOSELY STUFFED A BAG OF WEED IN HIS MOUTH.

Cops had a job to do. I cannot imagine the cops thinking "OMG! He's got weed! Let's tase him!" Instead it was probably, "This suspect is violently resisting arrest and needs to be subdued immediately to ensure public safety, which is our job."

Of course I don't have the full story, but I fail to see the connection between marijuana and the death. Marijuana was involved, but this thread title is ridiculously misleading...and just false. No offense Image Reaper :)

There is a video tape of the incident or parts of it, and being tased could cause someone to inhale what ever it was they were trying to swallow. I wonder if he was black?? :(

although doesn't seem like he was being violent just running away the whole time. Wouldn't be surprised if they zapped him because they realized he was trying to swallow something and they didn't want to lose an extra charge, serve and protect yuh know..

ohh and to the previous poster, cops accidentally killed a suspect, do you have to wonder if he was Black? :D hah joke.. 50/50 chance he a Hispanic:D

First, what a stupid thing to do, bring race into it. Second, if there's a video, how about a link?? Third, the suspect was resisting arrest. The cops didn't force the bag in his mouth, then tase him. They followed standard procedure when he was resisting arrest.

heh as far as the race thing goes, I was just commenting on this other dude's comment, which i think was silly to bring up, but nowhere near ignorant. unwarranted force and violence by the police is a sad but true and undeniable occurrence :(

as far as the main topic, each charge means $$ for the district through fines, each charge and arrest is a feather in the cap of a officer trying to make his way up the ranks and higher pay grade and like you said, meating their quota. Ever been to a municipal court? Pure fund raising, not much justice involved in the ordeal...

As far as running..it is simple and really doesn't require violence, slip your jacket and run, pivot and sprint if they have you facing a wall, etcetc. Only situation in my life i can think of where I could have ran (not got away just ran) where resorting to force or violence would have been my only choice is while laying on the ground with a cops knee in my spine, and even then to use enough force to free yourself you would have to be on PCP..

Although flicking a finger nail clipping in the general direction of a police officer can be considered assaulting an officer lol.. don't know exactly how things went down, for all I know he grabbed the cops baton beat him over the head with it, so I can't say anything besides police don't need a valid reason to use excessive force.

I hadn't thought of it that way, that's an interesting argument. I guess you're right, the gov't does make money that way. However, I find it hard to believe that a couple of cops care so much about bringing in more money that they'd jeopardize their career intentionally. They don't get a commission, so why would they care?

The point is, he wasn't just running. He was already being detained and in the process of being handcuffed. The get away from police officers at that point, he must have used force. The cops responded accordingly. For all the cops know, he had a gun hidden somewhere (cops don't frisk until after the cuffs are on).

It's unfortunate that there are a lot of cops out there that abuse their power, I agree. But to assume that's what happened is not my way of thinking :)

wow.. are those even real police?? I've seen woman officers subdue suspects more efficiently. From the way it looks he didn't break free, instead of using proper technique to control the man on the ground they seem to have decided "lets step away and just taze him.."

I may be mistaken, but in a war,people die. As a prisoner of war,it is your duty to try and escape. If escape is not possible at this time, the highest ranking in the group assumes command and begins working on a suitable plan for escape. If it is you and a cop guess who should be in charge of the escape attempt?

Oh yeah, try and invoke the Geneva Convention (only have to give name rank and serial number) when they arrest you and demand to speak to the highest ranking they have. As a prisoner of war you have rights that could become an international incident.....hmmmm.

I doubt they called an ambulance until after they realized he was unconscious. Before then they didn't have a reason to.

I also highly doubt the cops had any desire to see someone die that day. It's not like they love to kill people, and saying that they do is just ignorant.

You can see that he stuffs the sac in his mouth after he pushed his way off the ground while he was getting hand cuffed. This guy choked on a bag of weed, I dont see how that can be anyones fault but his.

You obviously have no medical training, and have just seen E.R. too many times. No one knew what was causing the obstruction until the EMTs arrived and assessed him.

When the EMTs arrived, he had been without oxygen for at least 5 minutes, and probably had no vitals. This means he was not even attempting to breathe. Your recommendation at that point is a tracheotomy? Pointless. How about we try shocking his heart and removing the obstruction instead of useless things we've seen on TV?

i watched the video, and even thought that dumbass stuffed the bag down his own throat, and yes he resisted arrest, he didnt appear to be choking until immediately after being tased in the chest. It seems obvious that the tasing could cause spasms that contributed to him choking. Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes, but i wouldnt be suprised if the both actions (his own and the cops) werent the cause of this "unexpected and tragic" result. If anyone other than the cops had been touching him when he died, you bet your sweet ahole they would be charged. I dont know if they should be held accountable or not, thats a jury's job, but they were involved, and should be charged, innocent until proven guilty, not held above the law.
The saddest part to me............i gre up close to PC beach, used to be called the redneck riviera, and you could get away with just about anything. They dont stand for jaywalking anymore, and given they are usually dealing with drunk partiers (at least on front beach rd, where this took place) they are very heavy handed in my experience. Mostly on front beach road they have to deal with drunk kids, not dangerous gangstas. Althought i do recall picking up large amounts of wxxd at pineapple willies!! Must be some activity about.
