welcome to headshake's hempy adventure!
what's good everyone? i decided to start a new log and dedicate this to the hempys that i've recently started thanks to being inspired by killa! i will still run the official test log for the wrecked homicide.
on with the show.....
for the buckets themselves i've used old one gallon milk jugs. i put a 1 1/2" hole ~1 3/4" from the bottom of the jug. i then cut out around the handle to make a bigger hole in the top while retaining the handle for use. after that i wrapped them in black electrical tape. the work pretty damn well.
i've been giving some thought to the holes. i don't think they need to be holes at all. they could be a decent sized gap cut out or burnt out with a soldering iron or the instrument of your choosing. if i'm not mistaken the hole is just to create a mini reservior. the placement shouldn't matter all that much either. the higher the hole the bigger the res. with that being said, please keep in mind that these are the ramblings of a mad man and nothing more and should NOT be taken as any type of gospel!!!
also, i think a piece of some sort of screen super/hot glued on the inside of the container would be a help. when the medium gets dry it does fall out. it also falls out when the mini res gets full. it's not terrible, but more of an annoyance. again, this is an OPINION!
as for the medium, i'm working with a 50/50 mix of perlite/vermiculite. i'm using this mix as a starting point as i have read many different opinions on the subject. again, this is not a recommendation. i know killa likes a 4:1 ratio of perl/verm. i've read others like a 60/40 perl/verm split. i just took some cuttings (more on this later) and they will go in killas preferred ratio for comparison. perhaps one of each strain's cutting in one of each perl/verm blend?
now for the setup:
i'm running a 4' x 4' tent thanks to irydyum. thanks again bro! the light is a 400W MH. the bulb is just a plain jane found at lowes. i have a homemade reflector. it's a piece of the old box aka frank for those of you who've been tuning in for a while. i have no exhaust at the moment, but it's not a big deal since the temps recently have been in the 50-60 degree range with sporadic days up to the low 70's. the tent runs anywhere from 11-16 degrees hotter than ambient. i think the hottest it's reached was 86 and usually if it hits the 80's at all it's around 82. it normally stays between 78-89, but sometimes will run as low as 71 with the cool weather. i also have a fan for circulation.
i'm using the tent for flowering, but i move all the veg plants in there during the day because for at least now there is room. when the bloom room goes dark i move them under 16x 23W CFLs most of which are 6500K with ~4x 2700K for a mix (and to fill sockets!).
i'll be using fox farm nutes, reason being is that i still have 1/2 bottle of tiger bloom, an almost full bottle of grow big hydro (not to mention a 2/3 full bottle of grow big soil) and all the soluble powders are almost full still. i need to pick up another quart of big bloom and i think that will allow me to use the majority of the other liquids and a good bit of the solubles.
and now the starts of the show:
***these have been vegged for 33 days***
-1x death by purple (thanks killa!) this is the biggest plant of the bunch. it took FIMing extremely well. it is thick and hearty.
-1x wrecked homicide. (thanks killa again!) this plant has what appear to be genetics issues. it's gnarled and dusty looking. it's also throwing what look to be albino leaves. interesting to say the least. topped nicely.
-1x wrecked homicide clone (obviously killa!) this one looks like basil as it was throwing roundish, non-serrated leaves. it was partially a crazy pH meter as well as too many PPMs with the nutes. it has recenlty stated to grow regular, serrated leaves. it did however top nicely.
-1x g-13labs fem'd diesel (thanks vaped!). this is a squaty bush. it's almost round. the growth is super dense. this one loved being topped!
-1x dinafem fem'd white widow (thanks vaped!) this plant is also a squaty bush and almost round. the leaves on it aren't very big at all, including the fans. it's weird considering all the others have fans bigger than my hands. she's nice and dense. this one also loved being topped!
-1x reserva privada fem'd OG kush. this one started a little tall and lanky, but too well to topping. it has recenlty started to fill out nicely. took well to topping.
***these have been vegging for 20 days in 20oz platic cup hempys***
-3x greenhouse fem'd white widows (thanks irydyum!). these were started behind the rest of the pack. they are about 3" tall but are thick and bush with hardly any spacing between the nodes. their leaves are already bigger than the DWW. i haven't topped/FIM'd yet.
i topped most of them and tried FIM the DBP and maybe another, can't remember. it was my first try. i'll definitely be trying it in the future!
i have taken a 3x DBP, 3x OG kush and 2x WH, DWW & diesel cuttings. i put these in jiffy pellets with in a platic tub. i covered the tub with plastic wrap and placed it on a heating pad due to aforemention temps. it seems to be sitting at about 78F and 81% humidity.
i will be borrowing a aeroponics cloner to compare the differences. i shall report the findings.
that's about it for now. i'm sure i'll think of more later. thanks for tuning in!

I'm in!
Some nice stuff, really interested in seeing that DBP grow out.
I'm a big fan of anything purple comin' from Killa.
Is that WH albinism local to one branch? Did it exhibit this early in growth? That's pretty cool lookin'. :upsidedow :D
-
welcome to headshake's hempy adventure!
really nice grow hope they all come thru with a good amount !!
i have a question headshake
Ive been interested in the hempy buckets for maybe three days now but i have not read were someone explains how to water them i now only know how to make them but how do you water them thru the top ? or is the hoe at the bottom for watering in which you add water in the resovoir. then gets sucked in the container?

it is not local to one branch. it is starting to show up more and more as the plant continues to bush out. it did exhibit it pretty early in growth. it's pretty wicked looking. i'm gonna try to get some clones with the albinoism in there and see what happens.

the hole in the bottom is to make sure that you don't over water them. when working with perlite it can float out the top if you have too much water. i suppose that you can water in that hole, but i water from the top... especially when the plants are young as the roots aren't very big.
the perlite and vermiculite have wicking and moisture retention qualities.
i hope i got all the questions for now. thanks everyone for tuning in!
as it turns out i think the DBP is a male, which kind of sucks, but i need another male for breeding purposes. so either way, it's a win. plus i've got a few more of those beans.
there should be some more stuff in the works in the near future. should get interesting!

i've got a quick little update for all of you interested parties.....
i've borrowed a cloner from a friend. it is a 5 gallon bucket with 10 holes (2" i think) drilled out of the top and net cups dropped in each one. then there are discs that hold each clone as the stem hangs into the net pot. (see pics below.)
in this beast i've put:
1x DBP (i think this is gonna be a male, still not sure though)
3x OG to gift said friend
2x WH
2x diesel
2x DWW
it will be interesting to compare the times it takes for the cuts to take roots in the peat pucks vs the hydroponic cloner.
i have also tidied up the mother/clone/night-time veg area.
that's about it for the time being. i hope all is well with everyone. peace.

Sweet log so far Shake, I am quite interested in the hempy buckets, so I will be following closely. Also that cloner looks awesome!

Not trimming down any of the fans on the clones?? Just curious if it was an oversight or if there was a reason.

just haven't done it yet. i was in a hurry to get some pictures up.
it's interesting though because the clones in the jiffy pellets didn't get their leaves trimmed and they are doing well. the leaves on the others will be getting cut though.

With the amount of water that will collect under the short dome, large leaves touching eachother and the sides are inviting spots for mold and crap to reside. Trimming them shorter won't harm anything, and it'll give a little more room in there.
Not saying it can't be done without trimming, it clearly can. Just a suggestion from my experience with that "type" of cloner
In the end, it's up to you my friend.
Peace

i'm not disputing your superior intelligence my friend!
i did plan on cutting the ones in your cloner. i should have cut the other ones too. i just didn't to start with and saw that they were doing fine and said fuck it. i never gave it thought beyond that.
i totally see your point about mold and crap.

after doing an inventory of seeds and whatnot should there be any problems with the clones, i decided to leave EVERYTHING (minus the clones of course) in flower!
i plan on taking some cuts from them all again, probably for the next two weeks, depending on how fast the cuts root and grow.

it's on the side. about 1 3/4" from the bottom on any side you choose. those numbers aren't exact, just where i started my experiment.
good growing!

right! it's meant to act as a mini reservoir. from what i understand it's hard to over/under water (assuming that you water as needed of course!).

Where in TX are ya?

I've always been curious, does that set-up require a transplant? since it is in such a small container? Or since you replace the nutes (like twice a day?) it doesnt feel the need to put out more roots to take in more nutes. Either way, lookin awesome.

you don't have to transplant. you are supposed to water i guess about every 2-3 days (as needed of course). so the plant doesn't have to "search" for water/nutes.
you don't have to transplant soil plants really, as long as you water them when they need it. not to mention that the plant will get top heavy and fall over. i'm not recommending this, but it can be done.
thanks for the kind words.

nice! I'm growing in my version of hempy buckets, (50%sphagnum peat moss 50% perlite, and my little res at the bottom of each bucket is hydroton. ) I am loving how fast they're going compared to my previous soil grow!:stoned:

really? do you have a grow log going? i'd be interested to see how they do. i'm having some trouble but i think it's pertaining to my pH meter.

on that note, the OG kush is looking horrible. the fans, even up top are starting to curl under real bad and turn dark green with some black action. the new growth tips look good for the most part.

heres the problem:thumbsup: The OG roots are heavy feeders I had to transplant every 10 days....I recomend you transplant the OG into a 2 gallon or 10 inch potter
Bro try some pro mix soilless medium Premier Horticulture – PRO-MIX growing mixes & Peat Moss: The ultimate growing performance

with that being said, i have dropped all of the hempy's on top of two gallons of soil. they all looked rootbound so this had to be done. hopefully the growth picks up here in the next few days. i'll keep everything up to date.

also, i've had some interesting times with a WH male. i have somehow managed to make this male hermie to female!
here are the pics to prove it. lol. i'm sure it's not good for anything, but i've only read about these. i guess if it was gonna happen to anyone it would be me as a buddy of mine so kindly pointed out!

apparently it is a freak show! i guess that will be the next thread.
as far as the albino, he is doing quite well actually. he continues to throw more and more albino as the shoots continue to fill him in. i'll get some more pics of him up tomorrow or something.
thanks for tuning in and staying interested!

Lookin good shake. Quite the conisour's mix you've got there.
In your cloner video, I couldn't see how it was spraying. Is is a 360 sprayer? So it basically just sprays the net pots? Looks pretty simple to make, maybe I'll try it.
