ROBBED, NEED SECURITY / THEFT PROTECTION IDEAS
So, I was robbed the other night, pretty much lost my entire crop for the season. I can't even explain how I felt when I saw my big beautiful plants gone.... if you have tried it you know what I mean.
I grow on my field, about 100 yards from my house and thought I was safe because no one ever comes by and it's a 1/2 mile trek over rocky terrain to even get here without coming up my driveway which is a dead end.
SO, I need help and ideas on security. If anyone has ideas for cheap do-it-yourself security measures please let me know. So far I have been thinking simple trip wires connected to something that will somehow alert me. I could also get some motion sensors but not sure how to avoid them being set off by dogs/cats or wild animals. I need to stay pretty cheap but would like to hear any and all ideas or links to any pages that has this kind of info.
Everything I can find is about staying hidden, well it's too late for that, I need theft protection / security for my legal garden.
PLEASE HELP!

well first things first... if they weren't visible from the road or anyone just passing by, then you have to consider the possibility of someone you told about your plot. Razor wire is cheap, and effective in some situations (going a bit extreme, lol)

You can utilize bouncing betties (S-mines). Made in Germany during WW2, there is a built-in mechanism to propel the mine 3-4 feet in the air, detonating around the thoracic cavity of the individual....
just a thought!

Dead bolts and window locks. Ouside, regular old motion sensor accent lighting, maybe a doggie or 2, a handgun or 12 gauge shotgun. Security sytems are good, unless police show up for alarm and find stash. Deadbolts and metal, reinforced doors

Thought you might want a response from someone who actually read and understood your post.;)
I'm in a similar situation.:(
Here's what I'm doing about it.
Bought a 12v. tractor battery and a charger for it.
(100yards? you might need a solar charger, or a little red wagon for swapping batteries.)
It will run the $40 car alarm that is triggered by an rf field type mass detector.
The pretrigger, when approached, beeps a horn.
No wanna wake the neighbors, so no horn.
I feed it to a 300W. inverter instead.
The inverter drives an electric cattle fence!
The fence driver is wired to a 5' X 10' metal dog kennel that I grow in.
[attachment=o228942]
Yeah, I'm pissed! Lost one of my breeders.
Thinking about a DVR and 4 cameras just to see them get zapped.:D
If they get past that, there's an inner perimeter sensor and a shock sensor that will blast the siren.
The neighbors understand what that means. and one of 'em said he'll deliver da buggah to my door, bleeding profusely should they try to exit past him.
The rest will just call 911.
Great to be legal, ain't it?
I power mine with an extention cable that runs from the house.
If unplugged. the battery will run everything for months
(I could just buy 2 batteries and keep one on charge n swap 'em every month, but, I'm too lazy for that.:))
Besides, this way, I will know immediately if it gets messed with.
I put my old computer UPS out there.
When unplugged, it beeps! And keeps producing power for about 24 hours with that small a load, (just a trickle charger).
Da beepin noise used to bodder me when we had a power outage.
Turns out, it's a feature!;)
Ya need details, I'll take pictures.
As for dogs?
Feh! My 90 pound, wee beastie slept through both thefts.
Neighbor suggested chaining my dog to da pen.
Bad idea!
Anyone who will steal your meds, will poison your dog.
Then, I'd HAVE to do something rash.
Anyone left standing would probably go to jail.
That about what your looking for?
Aloha,

ROBBED, NEED SECURITY / THEFT PROTECTION IDEAS
ive had an idea for something like this for awhile. its a non lethal form but would scare the hell out of me if this happened. ok so your deterant is a shitload of firecrackers and the way it is set off is by crushwire (used by the pieces of shit overseas to set off Improvised explosive devices). Crushwire is pretty self explanatory but for the non military peeps i will elaborate. Its basically two pieces of bare wire buried just an inch or so under the ground a few centimeters apart one on top of the other, when pressurre is applied via some little(or big) douche stepping on it. when the two wires touch it completes the circut which sends an electrical pulse to a device that lights the firecrackers also hidden in the ground and therefore scraing the ever living fuck out of anyone who happens to get caught in the middle of this little ordeal and probably keeping them from ever coming back. the beauty of it is no one dies and you dont go to jail for murder, and they most likely will have no idea what happened or how. You have the power source connected to a switch or remote of some sort so when you go visit your garden you just push the button and it turns off the system and either reactivates after a certain ammount of time or is manually turned back on the choice is really up to you. so heres the scenario some little douche rolls up in your garden steps on the completly invisible wire which can not be avoided due to the fact that it is thin inexpensive and can be buried everywhere then firecrackers or anything else you hook up to this will start blowing out of the ground all around this piece of shit. the douche will consequently wet himself and run like hell and not have any idea what just happened or how to avoid it next time.
This sounds funny but this kind of system is killing our friends and family members over seas everyday, and unfortunalty i personally know it works so if you would like some help on how to set it up or implement it let me know. I have all kinds of high tech solutions for stuff like this.

sorry meant to ask if you have a fence or anything up? is the area big enough that you could put up a privacy fence, its much easier to set traps if you only give them one way to enter, also if you had a fence up you could put up cameras and other deterants like previously discussed. im not so sure a cattle fence will be very effective because if someone got hit by it they would now exactly how to defeat it next time, such as gloves too easy to bypass. the trick is to keep your attack not only secret but unavoidable. which we can def figure out.

Weezard, thanks so much, yes if you have a few pictures that would help but I definitely get the gist and can be pretty handy when I want to be.... I will however be protecting an area that's at least 30x30 feet.
Thanks to everyone for your responses, keep it coming...

. people will come for your crop. know this.
island style trick #1.
-wherever your patch is. make 1 entrance (someone said this very on it.)
BUT this is for yourself.. you TRAP everything other then this entrance/path.
-nailine(for blowing tires.self explanitory i hope.),stakes, electrics, even crush wire( this would be to set off trees to imitate shots.) anything to match your degree of security will be placed to box your ladies.
-it is important to makes these boxs multiple and even further way from plants in hope to catch scum quicker.
- lastly . in greatest measure ive known the best success with TRENCHES around your plants. staked with whatever manure is around. people aint gonna rush to steal your corp when there clocks ticking. hospital time.
you might take joy on this. someone actually venged on the lowlife by visiting a few places to find anyone for infectious puncture on their foot. . furious vengence ;)

"wot i mean is the local bobby will want to know wot ur uptoo just seems to much to me! "
Zachary!
I want the local bobby watchin'!
We are growing meds legally.
At least I am.:D
(60 sq. ft. sounds a little iffy.)
In Hawaii, patients are allowed 3 mature plants and 4 'lings per license.
But only 2 caregivers per address. So the max is 14 plants to stay legal.
Point is.
My garden is legal. Burglary is not.
So for less than $200 in parts I can protect $5k worth of meds.
And da popo are sworn to help me do that.
I'll bet your milage varies.;)

na bother man if ur growing legal bud then ur approach would defo be different man .....
here in sunny scotland there is no such thing as legal bud .
it so sucks man i wish the gov would get there finger out there arse ......
not long ago i had over $10000 worth of med stolen but i had no security as it was safe for over 4 years but shit happens they took my plants and the pigs took all my tents ,lights all my growing stuff ....pain in the ass:)
i always advise growers to tell no one that ur growing not even ur best friends ..if someone has nothing to do with the grow then they do not need to know!

Dogs, outside dogs. Preferably Border Collies as they are super smart, high energy, and love to be outside and will defend their land and bark their heads off at strangers (which is usually the best defense) which would also alert you to a strangers presence.
No guns and no violence man (unless of course they come in your house). The electric fence deal does sound great though, with warning signs of course.
It very well may have been the cops that got your crop, could have seen it from overhead in the ghetto bird. When this happens they land, chop, fly. You could also move your grow INDOORS. Better luck next time. :hippy:

Finished my last grow and relaxed a little.
Am now in the process of installing the roof, and alarm on my bloomery cage.
Also found a DVR that uses 4, IR lit, color cameras, with field motion detection.
If anything moves within 15 yards of da cage, the recorder kicks in and saves the pre-ceeding 8 Mb of video as well.
So, even if the alarm runs them off, even at night, I should have excellent pictures.
Holds 30 days of high resolution 120fps video.
Draggin' my feet hooking it up 'cause I'm between blooms.
(Too much weed on hand, had to take a break)
So, when my 90 pound "moose" started growling and woofling at around midnight, I'm afraid I got a little sarcastic.
Said; "pipe down, there's nothing left to defend".
Next morning, I find that my neighbor had brought 14 plants down da mountain the night before and put them in the wooden pen that he uses.
[attachment=o229885]
Wish he had told me!
The Dawg was right!
Them bastids climbed an 8 foot lattice and swiped 7 of his immature plants.
(Gotta be dumb kids they took da wrong plants in the dark).
I'm tempted to finish building my trap and bloom a big, fat, girlin it, just for bait.;)

$ 260 for the DVR w/a 720Gb. drive.
Cameras were $40 ea. but are small, weathertight and almost invisible at night.
Plan to mount them high and in the center, looking out.
Might even hang a reflectix disk under them to keep the IR off da girls.

The dog idea always sounds good but in reality it can be painfull. :(
Last fall the entire contents of my greenhouse (8'x16') all of which where seeded plants was stolen. I had a german shepard who was an outside dog, and had been trained as a perimeter guard dog. A few years earlier someone tried to poisin him with a pan of anti-freeze, he was trained not to touch it. This time around they poisined him with cooked chop meat laced with strychine. The same poisin placed on raw meat he would not have touched it but because of my own fault of feeding him cooked chicken or chop meat with his meals I made him vulnerable. My own stupidy got him killed.
If you want a method of alerting you to something, get a small flock of geese. They will make a hell of a noise if anything out of the ordinary is going on in thier area or approches thier area.

Man, sorry to hear about your dog, that beyond sucks.
I have two dogs who sleep up by the house about 80 yards from the grow and it was a windy night... they didn't hear squat, besides, they bark so often I can't get out of bed every time....
As far as a motion detector, doesn't it go off when the wind moves the plants? What about rodents like ground squirrels? I'm not sure that would work. Can anyone chime in on this?
So far I have set up personal alarms, small gizmos of the type where you pull a pin which causes a high pitched 120db sound until the pin is replaced. I tie an improvised 'trip line' to the pin and tie it across the areas where the thief would have to traverse to get to the plants... hell I can even tie it to the plant... who wants to run off with a screaming plant? Anyway, I bought over a hundred of these alarms at a local auction, way more than I need but that was the size of the Lot. You can buy them individually on Ebay for $4-$8 a piece... Or buy them from me since I got way too many now, LOL.
I think my next step will be motion lights outside the grow. Looking at a possible car battery with solar 2 or 5 watt trickle charger. A normal battery should run 500-1000 watts for about 30 minutes.
I'm so damn low on funds though, not sure when I can do this. Looking to see what else I can do NOW that's $50 or less....
Thanks to all who have replied, I love it, I'm getting all kinds of good ideas from your input.
Lastly some good news. The thieves left two immature Sour Diesel plants which are now in full bloom and looking out-freakin-standing!!!!
Later all.....

You may want to check out Dakota Alert, they specialize in wireless security equipment.
Their website is: Dakota Alert, Wireless Alarms and Security
They make a wireless MURS system that is quite nice. The sensors are totally weatherproof, have an 80' max detection range, and a 1 mile transmission range over flat ground. (It's more like 1/2 a mile or less if you live in a hilly area though.) The range of the sensor can even be adjusted, and multiple sensors can be used. The handheld receivers can also be used for two-way communication is a base unit is purchased. The base unit can also be set up to turn on lights, set off an alarm, etc. when an alert is triggered.
They are somewhat pricey, and it can take a while to fine tune their alignment but they work very well. One drawback is that something as large as a cat or a skunk or even a large bird like an owl can set them off, so you will get some false alarms. However, the peace of mind is often worth the monetary expense and occasionally getting waken up in the middle of the night by a damn skunk.

No, no, No!
Booby trap are set by boobs.
Use your head, think it through.
("Geeze, officer, I didn't even see those plants until my ankle snapped").
Officer: "Lemme take a look, ouch! Damn! Razor blades!
"That does it! I won't sleep until this bastard is in cuffs"
Look up "malice" and "felony".:(
I would advise stealth instead.
And try thinking aloha.
