1/2 way through?

So i started a new grow back in march.
i germinated 3 seeds. 2 survived.
as of right now i have 2 plants growing both indica.
unknown strains.
its a window grow. both plants indoors by the window.
i am using regular tap water but i dont know the pH.
i am using Schultz Premium Potting Oil Plus.
no extra nutriets except MIracle Grow Plant food spikes.

one for sure is a female. she's about 2-3 1/2 ft tall including the pot.
i actually have it double potted. in a big one and one wedged under it to catch any water that falls...but none of the water makes it through so thats good right?
anyways. this female plant is doing well. long clear pistils looks very beautiful. i talk to her everyday. but on her bottom fan leaves....its starting to wither and brown from the middle of the leave working its way outward. the tips are barely turning yellow and curling upward.
the female itself is starting to get fuller.

the other plant is about 1 1/2- 2 1/2 ft tall including the pot.
showing no sign of sex yet but starting to get new branches at the bottom by the fan leaves. im gonna wait a little bit more before i do anything with this plant but could use some advice on the female.

by next week i'll have a dresser converted into a grow box.
its about a 5 ft tall dresser. i took the drawers out and drilled them together so its one giant door in the front which i can pull out. the inside is lined with foil tape. the bottom has been cut out so i can have an extra ft or so of grow room. so im gonna put the pot where the top part of the pot lines up flush with the bottom of the dresser. i plan on installing one or two fans to circulate air and pull the hot air out.

i figured i'll put one on bottom to help circulate air from bottom up and the other fan on top to pull hot air out.

as for lights......i have no clue.

any help would be great and i'll have pictures of both plants posted tomorrow night along with a close up of the troubled part of the plant.

Okee so here some more info on my plants and what im using.

no sign of sexing
bottom 2 fan leaves are light green/slightly wilted

Hey man,

I have quite a few things I think you should know.

A.) During flowering, plants do NOT like a lot of nitrogen, feed them more Phosphorus and Potassium. Feed them bloom nutes or any general plant food with more P and K than N.

B.) Do NOT line your dresser with foil tape! Foil creates hot spots and is actually really terrible at reflecting light for the purposes you intend it for! Paint the inside flat white or tape some white printer paper to some cardboard slabs and throw those puppies in there! SO MUCH BETTER THAN FOIL TAPE!

C.) For circulation inside of your dresser, you want bigger exhaust potential at the top near your light than the intake potential at the bottom so that:

1. You can create a negative pressure in your cab so as to pull in cool air at the bottom
2. Vent the hottest air around your light(s) immediately
3. Create an air current that circulates from the bottom up bringing all of the cool air from the bottom up to the top

D.) If you set up your circulation with enough negative pressure, you shouldn't need intake fans. Get a good fan for your cab. A good fan is a fan that will renew the air in your box once every 1 - 2 minutes. This means that you need to determine the cubic feet measurement of your area by multiplying the Length X Width X Height, and then find a fan that can pull that or half of that per minute (Cubic Feet per Minute or CFM).

For example, say your dresser is 5' x 3' x 4'. This equals 60 cubic feet (5 x 3 = 15 x 4 = 60). In this instance you would need a fan that has a rating between 30 and 60 CFM.

E.) Have you trimmed the bottom 2 - 3 inches of your plants off yet? Is that where your problems are occurring? If this is where those leaves are beginning to turn it is probably because they are worthless to the plant. The very most bottom foliage does not get enough sunlight to be of any good to the plant (bud sites suck too) and they essentially drain and distract energy away from your prime leaf and bud sites. By removing those lower branches and straggly leaves, you relieve the plant of that stress and refocus its attention on the primo bud sights that get lots of sun!

this is all good stuff. im gonna go home after work and measure out my box.
i'll start taking out the foil tape. its a good thing i only did the door so far!

A)any special plant food you would recommend?
or it doesnt matter as long as it has more P and K than N right?

B)how bout lights? any recommendations?
my friend has a botany lamp. its one bulb not sure how big or anything, but its blue. light blue.

C)after work i'll take picture of the dresser to show some detail of what i did.
im having a hard time figuring out how to make the door stay on.
basically i took the drawer faces and screwed them together. so it pulls off forward in one piece. maybe i can use some hinges? or weather stripping to keep it in place?

D)for the lights i was planning on drilling the hole on top so the bulbs are facing down. and for the exhaust fan i was gonna put it on the side of the dresser but near the top corners.
for the intake, do i just drill a hole and leave it open then?
should i worry about putting in a screen to keep out any potential bugs?
i havent had a bug problem so far but just making sure.

E) the browning is starting to occur where the fan leaves are starting to get secondary branches. when i say it has 13 levels i meant like where the fan leaves started growing underneath to the top. i've trimmed it before and taken down some fan leaves that didnt have any secondary growth, you know bud sites, but its still browning. it'll be easier to explain once i have pics up tonight.

F) when you get from the middle to the top of the plant, the secondary growths(bud sites?) are getting bigger than the fan leaves. eventually pushing some fan leaves aside to growing into them.... do i trim the fan leaves there or let them keep growing?

so say that i got fan leaves and secondary growth coming in right? the secondary growth is growing so big that its getting higher than the fan leaves that started growing above them. if that makes any sense at all. :wtf:

you've been a great help so far. i just hope i dont mess this one up!

First thing you should do is find the pH of your plant. Without knowing that, you can't possibly accurately fix a nutrient problem if one presents itself.

pH is essential.

to answer your question about lighting you want about 5000 or more lumens per sq/ft of grow space. for nutes you want higher P and K for flowering. stop 2-3 weeks before haverst. and as SMG said you deff want to find out you pH levels and maintain them between 6.5 to 6.9. I could be wrong on some of this so anyone is gladly welcomed to correct me :D

deleafter2220 is right about the 5000 lumens per sq/ft, however, this is the bare bones minimum for anything that can be considered decent. If you can achieve more, do it.

For soil, proper pH is 6.3 - 6.8. Check out the link in my signature, it has a pH and nutrient absorption chart for both soil and hydro.

In regards to foil vs. paper, are there any potential fire hazards by using paper with a low-wattage lamp?

the female has really come along.

soil has been at 6.6 since i tested it.
the other plant still shows no sign of sex.

Interesting, are you planning on doing an indoor project throughout the Winter?

I'm in IL as well and plan on continuing these current babies indoors.

There may be a slightly higher risk of fire if you use paper, however, if you have put in the effort to correctly set up your room/ box then you shouldn't have much to worry about as long as you prevent the paper from coming into direct contact with the bulb. Circulation is key! Avoid tin foil at all costs, there are so many more efficient reflection techniques that are comparable in price (not to mention easier too) than tin foil.

still just using filtered water and window light.

the only thing needed to be done is lights and fan.
the GE Gro N Show light isnt doing jack.
was thinking of getting shop lights to put in.
box is 34" x 18" x 35"
how big of a fan do i need?
what do you recommend for lighting?

If light seems to not be doing enough why not go with a CFL grow.
Couple Y-splitters and 6500k and 2700k Bulbs. Most lumens you can find is best. Or hung bathroom ficture with the Y-splitters. For fan you want enough to circulate what ever your grow space is.

Here are some links that give you stats on some really good CFL bulbs:

Also, in order to find out how powerful a fan you will need you need to take your LxWxH to get your cubic feet measurement. Then you need to find yourself a fan that is powerful enough to pull your calculated cubic feet measurement once every 2 minutes to provide ample circulation. Example: if your dresser is 2ft x 3ft x 4ft = 24 Cubic Feet. Thus, in order to pull that amount of air out of that space once every 2 minutes, you'd need a fan that pulls at least 12 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute).

Your passive intake holes should also be smaller than your exhaust in order to encourage a strong negative pressure to help with, not only with fresh air circulation, but air current circulation inside the cab.
