Any advice/potential problems?

I am on day 14 of origional potting and having some fun with some good bagseed.

But am getting concered that I have no greenthumb.

So anything that you might be able to tell me differently I would appreciate it.


What is your experience level? (first timer

Your Equipment:
.1) Type and wattage of lights. (MH 400w)
.2) Distance from tops (2 feet (makes the plant level temp aprox 90f)
.3) Reflector type? (Bare bulb with built in reflector (hydrofarm)
.4) Is there a consistent fresh air supply? (4 inch intake tube behind a lower 20" fan, and a osolating fan between/on plants and light)
.5) Do you have an exhaust fan and a circulation fan? (yes 40cfm (i think) fan pulling off top of light)
.6) What are the bulb wattages, kelvin ratings, and schedule? (18/6, 400w mh)

Your medium:
.7) Specific brand and type of soil, (FoxFarm, w/ perlite, worm castings)
.8) Size of container (6x6).
.9) Did you use peat pucks (reg seeds)

Your nutrients and water:
10) Source of water? (tap between 6-7 try for 6.5ish)
11) Method of checking water ph. (test kit)
12) Method of adjusting water ph. (ph down)
13) Specific brand and N-P-K ratio for each bottle. (no clue)
14) How often are you watering between feedings, and how much per watering? (not exact measuring, but feeling about 2 inches in dirt to see if wet)
15) Any additives or tea's? (no)
16) Are your ph levels stable, or do they fluctuate? (somewhat stable)
17) What is your ingoing water's ph? ...your runoff ph? (no water comes out of bottom so that I don't overwater)
18) Do you foliar feed? If so, with what, how often, and at what time do you spray? (no)

Your growroom:
19) Indoors
20) What size of closet, 5x4x7
21) What are the temps and humidity levels while lights are on? ...With lights off? (have not tested humidity, but room started very hot (over 100), after adjustments got it down to about 75 in most room, 90 below lights though, and I cannot seem to get it cooler without keeping the door open.)
22) Have you seen signs of insects in the growroom? (nothing out of ordinary)

Your strain:
23) What strain are you growing? (Quality Bag seed, but starting NY diesel)
24) From seeds
25) Is this an autoflower strain? (Doubt, but unsure)


Here are some pics of the plant that I am concerned about (Drooping at the end of the biggest leaves), the pot one is showing a bit of yellow I am seeing on the perilite on on the bottom.

Any feedback is appreciated. I am just very worried about the 90+F temp, and it being too windy. I don't want to burn so cranked up the airflow, but it is not helping the direct heat much. And at the same time, I don't want to blow the plant over, is too much wind a bad thing?

First, your perlite may discolor as you water. That is normal.

Second, since your plants are moving past the infant stage (seedling, 14 days old), they are probably ready to start having a bit of food. Because you are in pre-ferted MG soil, don't start feeding until they start to show they need it (usually yellowing on oldest leaves). And just like a baby, start slow, increase as you see how things go. I would start 1/4 strength, if they like that, go to 1/2 strength... You get the idea.

The pics of your plants look pretty good for the heat they are experiencing. If you are only reaching 90F right under the lights, and the rest of the grow area is around 78, I believe you will be ok. You may have some issues when you go to flower them, as then you will have to close them up for their dark period. What if you added a fan to blow on the light to distribute that heat around?

Too much wind can be bad; it is dependent on temps, RH and other things. If they are in lots of wind and the RH is low, leaves may get droopy or even crispy on the edges. If your leaves start getting seriously damaged, then you have too much wind and heat. All that said, I've got serious fans going on my plants and reflectors to disperse the heat and they seem fine. Sure, leaves get dinged but are not impaired for doing their job. Most wind damage I've seen on here has been on outside plants. :jointsmile:

Finally, other may disagree with me but, you should be watering to runoff. It helps wash out the old air and nute salts. Shoot for approximately 10% overflow (don't let them stand in this runoff). Much more than that won't be a problem but wastes your nutes.

Awesome thanks for the advice. Here is the pick of the fans and how they are pointing. They are both on the lowest settings.

I'm not sure I understand your answer to the ventilation and circulation question on the troubleshooting report.

I see that you have circulation fans. But, do you have a way to exhaust the hot air in your grow area to somewhere else?

Edit: Went back and looked at your pics closely. You have an air cooled reflector, correct? Is there glass covering your MH bulb or is the reflector open? Where are you venting the hot air from lamp?

It leaves the room through the ventilation into the next room to a carbon filter. The entire tube is about 10 feet long.

The light is open no plexiglass. And at the bottom just able to see it behind the 20" fan is a intake tube that is just open to the outside of the room. Same 4" ventilation.

I'm thinking that you are going to experience heat problems when you close up to go 12/12.

You said you have a 400+ cfm fan pulling through the light and reflector to exhaust. Remember that CFMs drop off badly when pulling through filters, ducting bends and long runs. Are you pulling through the filter? If not, pushing through a filter is very inefficient and cuts your CFMs even more. What about your intake? Where is it and how large? Is your intake lightproof?

You've got to be able to pull fresh air into the grow area as MJ loves fresh air. And it will help keep your temps down, which in turn will help you keep your problems to a minimum.

Edit: I would consider adding an additional exhaust fan just for ventilation. You should also investigate isolating your light from your grow. In that case, you would have an exhaust fan pulling air from outside, through the light and out that exhaust outlet. Since this hot air never touches your plants, it should not be stinky, so you don't have to filter it. Move your filter to the pull side of the new exhaust fan, which will scrub the stinky air before exhausting.

Sorry, missed part about intake. You will probably need to add another intake or increase the size of the one you have.

Really apreciate the help. But I am not 100% sure what you mean.

The fan on top of my light is pulling from it and pushing through the long duct to the filter. So I am not sure if that is pulling or pushing.

Then on the bottom where the second duct (same 4") comes in. I can cut another hole in the wall that won't be much of an issue.

But I am not sure about these two things, are you saying that I should put on 2 exhaust fans connected to the light (I have one atm) or just increase the size.

And 2nd: How would I seperate the light from the plant?

After I looked at your setup again, I was going to say you are pushing air through your filter, not pulling.

Wow man ty. That was helpful. I just looked at the room size and went with the 50cfm, but that says that I need about 200cfm....

Time to box it up and go back to the store......

My advice, if you can afford it, buy lots more ventilation than you think you will need!

When I did my setup, I wanted "extra" ventilation, so I calculated what I thought was 2x more than I needed.

If your profile is correct, you're a southern grower like me. Heat is going to be your biggest challenge, if you try to grow inside in the summer.

I'd worry more about exhaust than intake. Nature abhores a vaccuum, so I doubt additional intake is necessary, and it definatelly does not need to be fan-assisted. The fan-forced exhaust leaving the room will provide the suction for the intake.

Check the link in my signature regarding dealing with heat issues. Might be helpful.

Usable light from a 400w HPS extends about 3 feet, max. If you can find a heat-resistant glass or plastic for the hood, you can get the fixture to within 8-12 inches, or so. (more usable lumens to leaf surfaces)
