Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Hello All
I have a female outdoor Frisian Dew plant which is starting to go into flowering. It is 3 and a half months old and 4 foot tall and growing!
I noticed a few of the leaves had started to get eaten on the sides so I went to a reliable shop who told me that a product called 'Bug Clear' should do the job. Stupidly today I sprayed it in the full sunshine (was a very hot day today) and I have now noticed that quite a few of the leaves have gone a bit brown/burnt or stained. My question is, how will this effect the plant and is there a better way to solve my pest problem?
I also was wondering how much I should be watering it right now? It's in a 40 liter tub and growing shows no sign of slowing down.
I don't have any photos right now but any feedback would be much appriciated.
PS. This is my 1st grow hence my concern and obsession lol
Many Thanks

I would say never spray a pesticide on a plant that you are going to ingest at some point. But that is just my "organic" side rising up. And there are many growers on here that would disagree with me and be right (maybe) for their situation.
Do you even know what was eating your plant? Was it even a bug? What kind of damage did you have?
There is a troubleshooting form available at the top of the plant problem forum. Please fill that out and someone will help you diagnose and solve your problem.

Thanks for your reply. I have no idea what was eating it. The damage was pretty minimal now I come to think of it and I feel like a real idiot for inflicting this much more visible damage on my baby. The side of the leaves looked like that had been eaten by a small pest and small holes were appearing on some of the leaves but I could never really visibly see the pests. The plant still looks healthy enough apart from the brown stains but some of the tips are starting to curl a bit and appear yellow/brown. Original bottom leaves are started to dry and fall off now but I've heard that usual. Thanks once again

If you are just starting to flower, I'm not sure how much leaf drop you should be seeing. I don't grow MJ outside, so I'm unsure of how an outside plant behaves at this stage. For an indoor grow, you don't want to be seeing much leaf drop or discoloration at the start of flowering.
The spray damage. Is it only to a few leaves, or the entire plant? And is the damage staying the same or getting worse?

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
I meant to mention that overall you have a very pretty plant, :greenthumb: looks like a sativa.
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Spray damage I would say is about 5% of the plant, ie, only a few leaves + a few of the leaves that have been nibbled on by something! Thanks for your comment. I'm very very happy with it apart from the few things i have mentioned

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
 What is that glorious blue flowering plant in the background behind the MJ?
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Hey Crabby
The plant in the background is a Clématis. Pretty indeed!
More pics from today attached. It's still growing and most of it looks healthy enough but I'm still having some issues with discoloration, leaf burn and now curling tips. I've heard the bottom leaves always slowly die and fall off and that it's normal so I'm not worried about that
More pics to follow, let me know what you think

I love that clematis. Do you know which species or variety?
The leaf spotting I see on your MJ plant concerns me. IMHO (again I say I don't have outside MJ growing exp.), it does not look like the natural aging of fan leaves.
I suspect a pH/nutrient problem. What is your irrigation water pH? What do you feed? When did you last repot?
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
The tops of those plants look beautiful! Also, your lawn and moss look so green, I'm jealous. Hot and miserably dry here right now. :(
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
I'm afraid I'm not sure what species it is (it's my uncles)
I have no idea what my irrigation water PH is. This is my first grow and I'm a real novice. I have been using bio-grow inconsistantly and watering it every other day with a couple of liters of tap water with the bio-grow mixed in. How much water should it be getting at 4 months? I repotted it about 5 days ago, it's in a 40 liter tub at the moment. I have been very inconsistant with watering and nutes though so I think your right. I have also been putting in some superthrive once in a while. Any suggestions for a new consistant routine?
Thanks for all your help man

MJ is pretty picky about her pH. You need to monitor your pH at every watering.
You're going to need a way to test pH (either test strips or a pH meter) and a way to adjust it up or down, if necessary.
All these topics (watering, checking/setting pH, nutrient selection) and much more can be found in the grow FAQs and the stickies at the top of each forum. You're going to have to make a bit of an effort in this too, you know.
Best of luck, ting. Let me know how you do.

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Looking pretty good so far...
The leaves that were affected by the spraying in sunlight will likely not improve, but they shouldn't get worse. New growth will be your indicator.
The spots are caused by one of three things I can think of:
1) Lack of calcium. Molasses in your regimin can correct this.
2) Bug bite neckrosis from individual bug bites making dead-spots.
3) Leaf tip irritation from leaves rubbing or 'tapping' against/on other leaves. Been windy there?
With a consistent feeding schedule you will have much better results.
A word or two about Superthrive.

Hi Rusty
Thanks for your reply. I figured the burnt bits wouldn't repair but the good news is that it has grown nearly an inch since yesterday so I guess it hasn't effected it that badly.
Just been to a shop to get a PH test kit and the guy in the shop told me to just give it water for a week and then start adding minimal amounts of nutrients every 3 days?
Yep, It has been pretty windy. Do you think thats the reason for the leaf tip irritation? They have only just started to curl in the last 3 days. It's been very very hot and I think my bro sprayed some water on the plant during the hottest part of the day which obv didn't help things!
I'll keep you posted over the next few days but apart from the problems I've pointed out it looks fairly healthy right?
1st grow and a little obsessive lol
Thanks

Let the plant hydrate herself. Spraying while heat-stressed, adds stress. Keep the rootball (pot) shaded with cloth or boards or something, but allow for air movement around her. (shade cloth should work)
Don't overwater because it's hot, but make sure she doesn't run the soil completely dry either.

Hmm...that's unusual.
Go easy with giving nutes every 3 days. Start at a lower dilution rate, (1/2 strength?) and adjust if needed. But form a schedule. Guesswork can and likely will kill your ladies. Always measure your nutes.
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Thanks for the info.
I always measured how much nutes I was giving her, just i didn't have a specific schedule. Every 3 days or so but I now realize that I was feeding her a little too much.
At the moment she is in the house by the window so getting light but not intense sun or wind. I'll let her rest and see how the next few days go and then post some more pics cos I really appriciate the help you guys have given me
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Overall she looks pretty good to me. A tad too much soil in the pot, though. How long does it take to water her? (are you making sure to add enough water to reach the lower root zones?)
A board leaning against the side of the pot provides shade, keeping roots cooler, too.
Are you moving her indoors every night, or do you usually leave her outside all the time? Unless you are on a rigid schedule, best to leave her outside. Plus, when you bring her indoors, likely you're bringing in spiders and gnats, too. Not good for your houseplants.
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
At the moment I'm giving it two liters every couple of days, do you think that's enough or too much?
I take it in every night as soon as the sun goes down and take it back outside first thing in the morning. It seems to have gone well doing it like that so far. I have no other houseplants so bringing pests in isn't really a problem, I would just rather that they wernt there in the first place!

From what i can see, I love your backyard. :) It looks so peaceful, and that purple plant is gorgeous.
I used a product called "Bang" to clear up a spidermite problem a while back and the application said to use 3 parts water to 1 part Bang. WAY 2 STRONG!! Within about 12 hours every leaf was turing discolored and the stems were starting to go limp. This is a 3 month old mother mind you. I rushed her into the bathtub and sprayed her down as best i could, but the damage was done. Since then i tried the product again and found that a 20 part water to 1 part Bang works alot better as opposed to there recommended dosage. IMHO, i would use any of those sprays at 1/10 the dosage and work up from there just to be sure.

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Thanks Berry, it's a great backyard or garden as I would call it. Very peaceful indeed.
I feel a little stupid cos the damage done by the pests was minimal at best and now I've made her look UGLY! I think I'm just way too overly protective of her and a bit of a novice so hopefully from now on i'll do things right and there will be fewer problems. Thanks for the info though, if i notice more pest damage I will def look into buying some ''bang'' and use very small amounts of it.
Cheers

For regular watering, in a 10 gallon (40 liter) tub, I'd go with at least a gallon or two each time. A couple of quarts will only moisten the top few inches of soil, leaving your lower root zone dry as a bone and non-productive.
I drill a hole near the bottom third of my larger pots large enough to stick my finger in, to see if it needs watering. (1/2 inch to 3/4 inch hole, depending on largness of your finger, lol) No, the soil doesn't all fall out, and with larger pots you need to know if the water is getting down there. Avoid drilling deep enough to catch the roots, but if you hit a couple, it's no big deal.
I'd water to the point of runoff at least once a week on feeding day. (adding nute mixture after runoff starts dribbling-out) When feeding, at least a gallon, perhaps two of the nutrient solution properly diluted....added to the pre-moistened soil.
You will likely have to adjust waterings so as not to overwater. The larger pots usually hold the moisture longer till the plant get's bigger and uptakes it faster.

Wow, so by the sounds of it I have been majorly underwatering her recently. Thanks so much for all your help. This is really useful information which I shall put into practice right away. I'll post some more photos in a few days time to show you how she's doing.
Thanks once again and I hope you don't mind me pestering you further if I have any more questions?
Cheers

So far you're not pestering. Looking forward to the next round of pictures.
Now if only the weather would cooperate.

Some pix of my 5 and 15 gallon ladies:
I just transplanted into the 15 gallon pots the other day - 18" tall. The ones in the 5 gallon pots are a couple of weeks into 12/12. All are Inca Spirit x PokerFace x Diesel cross. (mostly indica)

Hey tingting, you plant looks very nice. I wouldn't worry about your leaves, since you don't smoke them anyways. Growing outdoors varies heavily from growing indoors. Your plants are not going to look as pretty, ie the brown spots.
This summer is my first outdoor grow. My buddy grew out outside last year with a few clones I provided. Good thing, cause I was freaking out over some things and he stayed calm, turned out he was right.
But what i am trying to say is that your end result will be the same even though she may not be to easy on the eyes. But I think Im too high to clearly state my point right now, so......
Hey Rusty, how ya been?

Thanks man. You guys are really helpful. I see your point and realize that I'm being well over protective as it's my 1st grow but as a whole, I'm very happy with how it's turning out. New pics in the next few days.

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Busy busy, looking for a job.(just landed one for now) Working on my outdoor grow, which I am very excited about.
I don't have my indoor grow going atm and my outdoor grow is back home about an hour away, so I get back about every other week to check on it. My buddy is taking care of that mostly. Works out good, he provides the spot and I provided the clones 50/50 split on the crop.
I was going to move back and live with him, but I couldn't find a job over that way and ended up getting on in the town I went to school at. But hopefully something will open up over that way so I can be closer to my ladies. I feel helpless when I am this far away.
Plus I don't really have a computer right now, at times, but I'm working on that too. So basically doing alot of work.
Oh and tingting, did you know what sex she is? Is it a clone or from seed?
-
Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
im not sure where you are located but usually pest problems outside GENERALLY remedy themselves in my experiances i had a mite prob about a month ago and was kinda worried nah thats a lie well yeah dont want them buggers indoors but a couple days later a small mantis a lil larger than an ant was helpin me out with a spider freind no more prob.
except catapillars every year just as the buds start to put on weight and you cant see them fuckers cause theyre inside the bud on the stem until one day the bud is just dead  so be care ful but there is no need for drastic measures like with indoors.
why do you take her in?
i also water from the bottom every couple of wters just let it suck it up

Try Neem oil for pest control on your plants. It won't burn the leaves like other pesticides will, and it's organic.

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
ok. Just went out for 3 hours. The plant had been indoors but it was sunny so I decided to put it outside for a few hours. I just got back now and this is what I have found. Nearly twice as bad as when I left. What the fuck is wrong with this plant?????

I believe the plant is a female and was grown from a seed. It's Frisian Dew by Dutch Passion. Thanks for you help by the way Lit Up

After 30 min spray with water....that really helps with burn and gives enough time to kill bugs

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Looks like not all of your leaves are affected. Is this correct? Watch those that look healthy and no spots, and see which direction they're heading...normal growth or speedy neckrosis.
Damage done previously to the leaves will not improve, but neckrosis on the damaged leaves will get worse as time goes by depending on how bad the damage was. New growth should be fine though, and don't start pulling leaves that aren't pristine. Let her deal with that.
Old leaves are old news, so give her some time to get herself acclimated to the new growing conditions. Let us know immediatelly if anything bad happens or isn't looking right. (take your time if she's doing great, but we'd love to hear that too)

Ouch. I'd be going through some serious seperation anxiety to be that far from my computer and garden, lol. At least you seem to have it covered.

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Yes, it's still only about 5% of the leaves i'd say that have been effected, but I have noticed a few markings on leaves that wern't there previously (i could have just missed them though) the newest leaves at the top are looking very healthy though. I guess it makes sense that old leaves that have been effected would only get worse, it just gave me a bit of a shock to see how much worse they had got in just a few hours. Will post around this time tomorrow night as I'm working 16 hrs tomorrow! JOY JOY JOY!!!
Will keep an eye on unaffected leaves and see what happens to them
Thanks again buddy

Pest Spray has burnt my leaves
Hey all. Have no pics just yet but will post some tomorrow.
Plant update and a few questions:
1. New levels and leaves are coming through and all look very healthy as do the heads of all the newish branches. The burnt or effected leaves look the same as they did yesterday and haven't got much worse so fingers crossed that that is the last of the damage.
2. More of the bigger bottom original leaves are now starting to die and drop off. Is this normal? I have read that it is normal for the tiny original leaves to drop off, but now the bigger ones are and this is slightly worrying me.
3. My plant is now over 4 foot and 14 weeks old. How much bigger should I expect it to get and when should the plant start to flower? I'm a novice and can't tell if It has yet so could anyone please help me form the pictures I have supplied earlier in the post?
Thanks guys, you have been a great help so far.
