H1380 NC Medical Marijuana Act scheduled for Health Committee hearing

On Thursday June 18th at noon in Raleigh, the NCGA House Health committee will take a look at H1380, the North Carolina Medical Marijuana Act.

We are in the south in the bible belt. Itâ??ll be an uphill battle. I wasnâ??t holding my breath about it even going before a committee at all and thought it would just die un-debated altogether. Iâ??m very happy that they are at least going to take a look.

But now is the time for all NC residents to email their representatives and let them know they support this bill. Especially if those representatives are on the Health committee.

RALEIGH, N.C. â?? Proponents of legalizing marijuana use to relieve pain and suffering in some patients are getting a day at the North Carolina Legislature to speak out.

The House Health Committee scheduled a committee meeting Thursday to discuss a bill that would allow people with debilitating medical conditions to possess an adequate supply of the drug and not be prosecuted.

The measure also would create a licensing process for qualified patients and those entities that distribute marijuana.

The Marijuana Policy Project says 13 states have laws designed to allow patients to use marijuana to treat illness without threat of state punishment, despite federal law still barring its possession.

Opponents argue marijuana is a dangerous drug linked to health risk and can lead abusers to try other hard-core addictive drugs.

I was reading the online news about the above artical of the meeting in raleigh nc. and on the same page as the important information was some bad propaganda from the news media. They showed a picture of a large seizure of marijuana plants in mexico. It seems to me the media has some folks trying to make it look like a terrible thing that the health committee is even looking at medicinal use. The seizure was in the exact same caption as the medicinal news. I hope NC has a chance but it looks like the media is working against medicinal use.:mad:

This was June 25 of 2008. H2405 died in the Health Committee unfortunately.

I stand corrected on the june 25th date it was indeed 2008, although the committtee meeting of June 18 is in fact today (2009). I seen it on the morning news this morning.

I also see on there schedule for the health committee is alcohol tax increase. Funny to me that booze and bud are being talked about on the same day. I sure hope the bud talk is favorable. If anyone reads or hears anything please post because this whole senario is interesting to say the least. The proposal considered Thursday by the House Health Committee would exempt from prosecution patients who possess a small amount of marijuana or grow it for themselves.

Janet Osburn of Clayton is a nurse who testified smoking marijuana eased her constant pain from spine and muscular disease.

But the Rev. Mark Creech of the Christian Action League of North Carolina said legalizing marijuana would create unintended consequences and other prescription drugs can bring the same effects.

No vote was taken. Committee co-chairman Rep. Bob England said he didn't expect one this late in the session.

I dont get it! All this time has passed with HB 1380+1383, and now they pull a fast one. lol.

I listened to the house live feed on the internet and from what i gathered the MJ medicinal usage probably will not be voted on this year. I aint sure the reason but they did pass the law to ban plastic walmart bags from the coastal areas (asswhipe politicians). They spent tons of time on that but they more less swept the marijuana bill under the carpet for who knows how long. I hope i am wrong but i still don't think this will pass in NC any time soon. The only thing that might speed this process up is if Obama makes it legal as far as the fed. Law is concerned. MY conclusion to this whole mess is i hate it for NC because i got some tax free killer bud that i am going to enjoy this beautiful weekend and it didnt have to pass many hands driving the cost up above 300 an OZ. I guess i will have to pay half price for my bud (145 OZ) and risk a citation for a small amount. Oh yes and and i believe its the shit that killed Elvis!!! :smokin:

NC is usually one of the LAST states to do something radical like legalizing marijuana . cant the Damn bible thumpers read? the bible says god put all herb and seed bearing plants on this planet for mankind's use! And their are so many positive effects when used properly i mean they even had a nurse testify! i will try and stay hopeful but i also don't see this happening for a long time unless the president were to do something about it or a bunch of other states pass similar laws.. o well ill just have to enjoy my tax free purple widow :bong:

See, this is frustrating to me. Im a patient in Colorado and they got shit good over there. They got dispensaries, 1/2 oz. I get 150 1 oz 300. Pretty good stuff, last bout a month (oz).

To me Barney Franks 2 bills could save the country, think about it, an end from federal prosecution, if its small amounts > 100 grams. The other bill is to protect all patients that live in states that allow medical mary.

Barney Frank is our only hope in 111th congress.

Like i have said many times over it will be a long haul for NC. I dont see any major changes in the near future. Its frustrating to all involved and i honestly feel for anyone who has a need for medicinal MJ.
