Procyon Output Data

Been a little busy lately so just starting to get round to the measuements I was curious about. This is my first round of data collection for the Procyon 100 luminaire system.

I'm using a CEM DT-1308 light meter for all measurements. I've been trying for a week to get the mete's sensetivity curve but haven't found any info other than what was included in the user's manual(which was so small I couldn't get the numbers off of the scale). The manual also states that the meter is weighted to human sight, but how closely is anyone's guess.

That being disclosed, please take this information with a grain of salt, but it is a good start at quantifying output for these lights.

I don't think this is the sort of thread that will generate many posts, unless someone finds a problem with my measurements.


It's more of a table of data.

Find the LUX that you are looking to match and the starting point of light distance is suggested by crossing to the distance in the table.

For example if one is looking for 27,000 LUX the the starting point would be 12". I was sprised to see how far off these measureemnts were from my expectations from the inverse square root formula would suggest. Alas I am too simple minded to account for the reason that there is a difference.


I will post my TI measrments, etc. as time permits.

Right now my trees are hiding from any air conditioning bad karma in the "grow room" so I have to wait to place the lights in their flowering configuration to make that particular measurement.

The inverse square law applies to an omnidirectional (360 degrees) light source. LEDs have a much narrower light dispersion (15 to 120 degrees). The lumen drop-off is dependent on the viewing angle.

I'd say that your 1/3 the light for twice the distance says the Procyon has 120 degree lensing, no?

Got similar results from a UFO.
And a lensed 5W emitter array had less "drop-off" per distance than the UFO had.
I have 60 degree lenses glued on them and, allowing for some loss to the interface, they come close to 2X the distance 1/2 the light.
180 degree emitters do run pretty close to Inverse square law though.
My Ledengin emitters are 180 degree and measure within 10% of what the ISL says it should.:(
Tried lensing them but the lenses trap too much heat.
Now hunting for tiny plastic parabolic reflectors to attach to the red leds.
(I already have a surplus of blue light and want the wide angle on the blue emitters)
Anybody know a source offhand?

Thanks so much for posting this info.

I grow under 2 Procyons (along with other lights) and I've tried to "eyeball compare" how a plant grows under them as opposed to 150w(18K) and/or 250w(33K) HPS or T5s(20K). Having some numbers to start with sure helps. Your numbers seem reasonable to me.

The angle of dispersion from the LED lens was the missing part of the formula.

I think that 2 Procyons is a great rig for personal med grows.
Don't wait for thr trich's to turn amber when you flower, I waited a bit too long and have some very stony, couch-lock meds. But I also have problems with joint pain (and am a guitarist) so that turned out to be a blessing!

Props to Weezard for that heads-up.

Great thread. I just got my light meter and I'll be measuring my Procyons soon, your measurements are an unexpected godsend - thank you. I'd rep you but I don't think I have enough posts for that ;)

One thing I thought I'd mention is that when my Procyon gets closer than 24" to the canopy, the leaves twist sideways and "ram's horns" show up - like they're responding to heat stress. Which is relieved as soon as I move the light up.

I guess the lower lux # is due to it emitting only blue & red light and that the lux measurement totals for the HIDs include the other spectra(?) Hence my plants reacting as if they're receiving too much light when actually the lux reading is lower than what it would be with an HID b/c plants use more red and blue. I'm just stabbing around here. What do you think?
