vote headshake king of cardboard!
what's good everyone? i've been slacking in my duties of keeping my grow logs going. as some of you know, i have constructed a new "frank", although that's not the new ones name. a name actually hasn't been given yet.
anyhow, here is what's going down at the moment. there are six various dank seeds that have taken up residence in the new box. they are all ~21 (give or take, not including the pot). the reside in 3 gallon pots.
they stretched for some reason during veg. i guess i thought they were closer than the lights than they were. or maybe they were indica dom. hybrids. that's kinda what they look like.
about the new flower box, i took a box that is 47" x 24" x 21". i put an adjustable light fixture (homemade of course, out of cardboard!) in there. i added four 120mm pc fans up top and cut three exhausts down below.
the actual flower area below the light fixture stays between 78-80F degrees.
the area above it hovers between 88-91F. i was thinking of adding a few little intakes up near the top.
there is a total of 16 23W, 1600 lumens (~, they may vary sligthly) CFLs in there. i didn't count the ratio, but it should be close to 75/25 (2700K/6500K). i have some extra 2700K bulbs if the ratio is off.
i've been using the fox farm nute line up, both liquids and solubles. today when they got fed i gave them the first dose of beastie bloomz. this is the first time that i've used it and i'm curious to see what happens. i've been impressed with the fox farm nutes so far. i guess anything is a huge step up from miracle grow though.
there appears to be some light leaks as several of the ladies keep trying to grow balls. i know up top where the exhaust light gets in (although i do cover this up after lights out). the other area i think it's getting in is around the door. i used duct tape on the last "frank". i wanted to try something else. there is also the intakes down near the floor. i lean books up against those.
any ideas on light proofing?
i've got a several pics so some will be following this post.
i think that's about it for now.

pic 1- inside the new box.
pic 2- straight on.
pic 3- the new light fixture. it has 2x 4 light vanity bars and the two outdoor lights in the middle. some have Y splitters as you can see. i need to get some more.
pic 4- everyone inside.
pic 5-the exterior.

pic 2- exhaust fans.
pic 3- one of the intakes.
pic 4- this one was taken today before watering/feeding.
pic 5- the re-veg from the last batch and four youngsters. the other beans that i had germ'd with them never popped. i'm running out of viable beans....yikes!

vote headshake king of cardboard!
wow that looks pretty sweet... from the inside you'd never guess it was made of cardboard lol... looks totally pro from the inside.
as for light proofing the box... what about making like big channels/ducts out of cardboard kinda shaped like a "U"? should block light but still let air/wiring go through the "U" shape
-
vote headshake king of cardboard!
yeah that makes sense syde. i was thinking something like that. or with a bunch of holes that were offset on two layers. but your U idea sounds much better.
thanks for the compliment by the way!

I've got some killer popcorn mid beans you could have :D Nice fat juicy buds too! More bud than leaf ratio in flower!
Also, I'd definitely go wit something U shaped like plumbing pvc. I had a grow box out of a rubbermaid container few years back and that's what I used to keep the light from leaking out the ducting part.
P.S. They are looking good though! Specially the re-vegged one! Kudos my man!(must spread rep around before giving it to headshake again :wtf:):thumbsup::thumbsup:

the box is a f*$kin inspiration shake that is amazing what you have done with a box. Seriously looks pro from the inside. reminds me i need to keep up with my log btw I'm in the middle of building a new flower cab, its too hot where my current cab is atm. so that is all to come in my log. but first VEGAS. have a 4 day trip but plan to update my log at least once before then. that's end of this month.

Looks good shake. You might need more room in the box for the ladies to breathe a bit easier but overall I'd say it looks great! Oh and try throwing a white and/or black sheet over top of everything for light proofing.:hippy:

Hey Head,
It's looking good! Plants are looking quite healthy as well!
I have always been under the assumption that the majority of light comes from the sides of cfls not the tip/end. If that's the case, those sockets could be more useful in a more diagonal arrangement.
I am liking the cardboard!!! Great job!

shake, you are the king of cardboard! or atleast that's my vote. I'm totally blown away. your light setup is the $hit, I gotta start dreaming up something like that. that's ten times better than searching for something the right height to set your plants on. I have an idea for your fans, make a scoop. brace yourself...build it out cardboard. I'm gonna post a pic of a box I built for somebody, I think you could use the same idea. it's not my favorite light trap, but I think it'd work good on your setup. just an idea. shake again, I'm blown away. you've kicked cardboards a$$.

sounds good man! i might have to use some cardboad like fluid recommended. i just think it's gonna work better for my purposes. although, that pvc could work for the intakes.
thanks for the kind words.

it's really only some cardboard, hot glue, auto sunshades, some zip ties and rope plus the lighting.
i'm looking forward to the update! have fun in vegas and be safe!

yeah, i agree with you 420. these ladies grew so damn big so fast that i just wasn't ready for them. and i just can't bring myself to kill one off...although i know it would probably be for the best.
the sheet is a good idea! i might have to go with a hybrid between this and something like fluids idea.

thanks for the compliments balkey! you are probably right, but the sockets are hardwired into the fixtures. i plan on adding more Y splitters. that should help with that.

that's much appreciated fluid. that's pretty much along the lines i was thinking. or a tower-esque thing with offset holes or a horse shoe. i gotta do something.
i think instead of using cardboard, next time i'm gonna use lego bricks! should be interesting.

it's funny what an experiment can lead to. and the book reads ".........headshake started with nothing but a mere cardboard box and fistful of CFLs and graduated to......." well that's it. i haven't graduated to anything yet. i'm still stuck in the cardboard and with the CFLs.

But the way im with FLUID these cardboard boxes you completely dominated. After my Aurora Indica i think im going to make a bigger box for flowering. Also if you dont mind me asking were did you get the 2x4 Vanity Light Bars and how much did they run about? thanks YOU THE MAN!

Cardboard is widely used to mock up structural designs or to make templates of other materials that are either too expensive or difficult to work with. Great stuff!
I have a brother who watches my grow and decided to do it himself. I use 2' x 4' pieces af cardboard with mylar glued to them used as reflectors. I hang them or just prop them around the plants. My bro decided to build a wooden veg box and glued his mylar in it. Well, it looked really nice and it worked, but when he decided to make changes to his design the wooden box and glued mylar were worthless to him now. "I should have used cardboard." I can start a grow in a smaller area using these reflectors and expand the area in a minute. It also alows me better access to the plants. Bro now has an area in a room with an 8' x 6' area 'tented' with panda film. He now uses mylar on cardboard to reflect light close to the plants. Instead of stray light traveling from lamp > panda > plant (6'+ total distance) it travels a total of 2' -3'. At least four times the amount of light hitting the plant.
And for a total enclosure, as you've built, cardboard works wonderfully. I also think that in the event of the unthinkable, my grow (of 6-10 seedlings/plants) is discovered by authorities, it doesn't look very 'commercial'. Definetly looks ghetto and it can be taked down and put away in short order. I have yeilded up to one pound of dry bud from a one square meter area (aprox. 4' x 3').
Endless other possibilities using CB for inside growing.

I know you don't need anymore slaps on the back, shake, as your back must be hurting already, but that's a dang fine contraption you got there. I concur with all previous statements that the inside rivals those dang $1500 commercial boxes. I know you'll figure out the light leak issue, as the light traps discussed above sound perfect.
Most of all, your fine green lady friends look amazing, and that's what it's all about. Good growing, my friend!

that's true shove! i never thought about the mock up and design stuff. makes perfect sense though.
and i totally agree with you about the non-commercial look. and the ease to break it down/get rid of it. always a plus!

I;m really impressed with how well that reflector you have right above the lights works.. you can really see the contrast in brightness between the upper and lower halves of the box in those pics...
i've been meaning to do something similiar in my box for awhile but i just haven;t gotten to it.. maybe this weekend!
what is it your using to line the inside of your walls btw? looks like emergency blankets maybe?
-
vote headshake king of cardboard!
thanks syde! that reflector has no paint on it. the one that had been painted got soaked in an unexpected rain storm.
it's pretty cool how well the reflector keeps heat off of the ladies. the top will get to about 90F, but the bottme hardy ever breaks 80F. it usually hovers right at 78F. it stays cooler than the ambient room temps!
they are auto sunshades. i got them for $.99 each at the $.99 store. they were cheaper than the blankets and much more easy to work with. i just modified as needed and hot glued them in.

well i just walked into the room, checked the ladies and found the light casually resting on top of the plants. awesomeness.
so i ran to the $.99 store and picked up some zip ties. i hope this holds. the only major damage done was to one of the plants. it broke the top inch or so. not that big of a deal. there was some burnt leaves on a few others. oh well, live and learn i guess.
killa, i guess i should be looking into hydro. that's pretty awesome! i appreciate you letting me know your trade secrets.
i currently am using the FF lineup with the solubles. guess i need to make some of those hempy buckets. guess i'll be doing some research here in a bit.

I thought that could be a problem one day with cardboard but i have made my fixtures kinda more sturdy.......my fixtures are bolted on using large washers on the cardboard surfure to make it more rigid.....this was the third cardboard box i build to grow in.....I used a nice box bought from Office Max....its like double thick....sorta like wood...i even filled all the gaps with cardboard and hot glue....hot glued all the seems....and painted flat white.....I know i should have just built one out of wood but at the time the money was low....i figured it cost me $50 with the 2 computer fans i had to buy.....im about to build a new veg box and retire the cardboard box maybe this week...
One more thing...i see you changed your signature.....bro pulling a lb from a cardboard box make you the undisputed King of Cardboard!
-
vote headshake king of cardboard!
i never thought about using washers and bolts. i think i might have to revamp the reflector/fixture. it was the rope that was holding the fixture up that pulled through. i had a zip tie there but i guess it was too small. the fixture itself is pretty rigid though.
this is one of those moving wardrobe boxes. it's double wall corrugated (it's not cardboard actually, lol). it has a metal bar across the top of the box.
next time it's wood for sure. and a real light! hopefully sooner than later.
i look forward to seeing the new box killa. you gonna do another log?
and i'm not sure where the 1lb thing came from, i've never pulled a pound. i hope that i didn't write that somewhere. if i did it was purley by accident and i apologize!
so there, yo usee, i'm still prince. or one of you can be king, the other prince and i'll be the earl. i'm fine with that too!

ALSO! htgsupply.com has some sweet deals on 150-400hps sets.
plantlightinghydroponics.com also has EVERYTHING you need to do aero, hydro, dwc, or the hempy buckets that killa is running.
hempy is just as simple as soil, just quicker reactions to everything. Just water like normal. Once everyday for a set amount then once every other day is what he told me and McToker a couple weeks back. Electronic ppm/tds/ph meter will be the best bet. considering he said something about running 5.6-5.8 ph.
I'm switching to hempy when I get the 400watt hps hung in the closet.
