Bagseed discussion

Can we please clear the air on something for all new growers who choose to use bagseed to learn the trade?

Now let me start by saying that bagseed is way better than noseed, I'm sure we can all appreciate that. Second, if that is your only viable option, you should grow the hell out of it the best that you can, and we are all here to help you in that regard.

However, you must stop posting pictures of your "babies" and asking people how big they should be, what they should look like, when they are ready for harvest, and other "STRAIN" specific type questions. NO ONE on the forums can predict what your bammer bean will do. You don't know what the hell it is, so how could anyone predict anything for you?

I just had to vent this out because I'm seeing this trend among these CFL grows. I'm proud of every single grower that puts seed #1 into anything to grow it, sincerely, but you have to use your brains when posting, so you don't aggravate the piss out of the very people that have the desire to help you. THINK before you ask, and if you have a question, just ask it. Don't post a title that says you have questions, then the only question you have is "How am I doing?". Ask tons of questions, but try to be direct rather than vague. You will be contributing to everyone by asking things outright, trust me.

Sorry if I have offended anyone, but I searched and couldn't find anything spelling this out and thought there should be a dedicated thread.

^^True for the most part... the only thing I kind of disagree with is that once the plants are a couple weeks old, you can usually tell something from the leaves concerning height and flowering time. It's easy to spot a sativa dominant, long and thin leaves- so you will have a very tall, skinny, and long-flowering plant. Exactly the opposite with indica dominant, and somewhere in the middle if it's a hybrid. But that's about all anyone can tell you, and if you've been reading up, you should know that already :)

Waiting to sex the plant during veg? Could take 4 weeks, could take 8, patience...

As for the "how am I doing"... ask your questions if you have them, otherwise start up a grow log, and people will definitely tell you how you are doing :thumbsup:

Many great legendary strains & species were once "bag seed". Sure their's a Perl in every few hundred-thousand oysters but id rather spend the few hundred to ensure great genetic selection. Strawberry cough for instance is way more efficient of an anti anxiety medicine then any benzodiazapine will ever be.

Love bag seed cause I don't have an option on good genetics at the moment. Growing is a great hobby regardless of seed stock.

For learning how to grow at first...i guess bagseed is good. With how easy it is to get great genetics all over Canada, UK, and US...I think that not getting good genetics at the start is kinda pointless though imo. I dont know anyone that starts growing thinking, "I cant wait to harvest this swag!!" Seeds are SOOOOOOO cheap now a days. Another added benifit from getting proven genetics is that many growers have already done most of the work for you. There are grow videos and well documented stats for almost all of the A+ strains out there. I look at it like this....you can do everything perfect with swag and no matter what...you stilll got swag :(

I'm sorry but if someone would not tell you it was bag seed you would not have a clue even if you smoked it. It would be a good grow or it would not. Has almost nothing to do with where the seeds come from.

All SEED are chronic in the hands of the right grower.

Case in point. My Bro is sooo cheap. How cheap is he you ask ?
Well he's soooo cheap he can take the best genetics and in just one grow turn it into swag. He has no patients. He doesn't watch his PH. He only gives them well water. He's soo cheap he has nutes he owes me for from a year ago. No nutes for the plant cause they ain't doing what he says and besides they owe him thier very life. Then he smokes them before you hardly see white hairs and wonders why he doesn't have the chronic. He is the De-evloved man.

So guys and gals out there. Don't ask what strain it is cause nobody knows but you.

My Bro is sooo pissed at me now cause he thinks I owe him and he is jellous.
My last crop was not big but the papaya turned purple at the end. so it was called GRAPE APE or OBAMA. Every body that tries it loves it and it keeps the cops confused if they hear about it.

Our next crop has a bunch of hawiianxSkunkxBigBud. No body wants to hear that and it smells just like Tooty fruity chewing gum and if you smoke tooo much you will trip balls.
So we will call it tooty fruity or balls to the walls.

I find bag seed is hard to grow. As an experiment I started some bagseed from a friend and some Nirvana Papaya at the same time. All conditions were equal. The Papaya seed (in the middle) out performed the bag seeds during the first 3 weeks.

Didn't get to finish any of it...had to abort the grow...:(..but, the point is: good genetics with good hybrid vigor sure makes growing easier...IMO.

IMO, There is no way in hell that Ed Rosenthal or Jorge Cervantes could turn mex ditch weed into chronic without doing massive genetic changes. Then again mabey yours and my definition of chronic may be completely different...that must be what it is. :jointsmile:

he's not saying that bag seed will replace quality genetics. what he's saying is that any seed can be grown top notch. take a look at my grow logs. i was using CFLS and bagseed and it turned out pretty nice. it was in miracle grow at that. people thought it was 'dro.

mexican ditch weed didn't start out looking brown and compressed. it was nice and green, just like what you grow, albeit probably not covered in trichs. that has to do with the amount of effort and quality of equipment, nutes etc.

so bagseed can in fact come out as the chronic.

Very true shake, mex shwag didnt start out shitty, brown, and compressed...but, it wasnt ever potent or going to ever be potent. Peoples opinions of what the chron/dank is differs greatly. Why did your friends think you grew your shit hydro...:jointsmile:

trust me, i'm aware what chronic or dank is. potent is a much greater range of opinion that what dank/chron is.

people though it was dro because they are brainwashed. just like most people think purple bud is the shit, no matter how much you try to explain it has to do with genetics and cold temps.

i'm not saying bagseed will ever replace quality genetics, i'm simply saying that you can give someone who can grow bagseed and someone who can't top flight genetics and look at the end results. which one do you think would look like dank?

where do you think all of these top flight genetics come from? just like dogs, they've merely been breed for desired characteristics. (all species of dogs, over 10,000 of them come from FOUR species of wolf.) cannabis is no different.

Too bad Dutch the nirvana papaya is the bomb. It's the meds we have now. Burning one as I type must go lay down. LOL

Really Zondor and latewood watched me grow out a sativa bagseed into some thrichomed sweet weed like I never had before I ordered the genetics.
Looked very much like nirvana hawiianxskunk.

I do not have any bagseed growing at the time to show a comparison.

If you want to see what I call chronic I will take some more pic's of papaya and my cross of hawiianxskunkxbigbud. They are starting to sugar up real good about now.

i'm by no means saying i would choose bagseed over quality genetics. although some of the coveted strains of today have come from bagseed. i will take known quality every time.

By no means was I directing any ill will toward the bag seed either. I started this thread talking about the people who want others to tell them what they are growing when they use bag seed, and all the randomness that usually follows. People coming in the thread with all kinds of off the wall ideas of what they are growing, when the fact is that it's impossible to truly know anything about it until you harvest it. At that point you can start making assumptions about how to grow it, how it will react to different stimuli, etc etc... The only way to learn your bagseed is to grow it, clone it, grow it again, clone it again and so on. The advantage to using strains and known genetics is that information in many cases is already available to you.

I'm sure somehow, some way, before seed banks and worldwide genetics sharing that every seed would have been a bag seed at some point in it's life. Whether or not someone gave it to you to grow and told you what it came from there was no "information sharing" like there is today.

All the chronic that we are smoking today is thanks to the "old schoolers" that put in work with fluoros and back yard soil and miracle grow hydro setups, and all the other ingenuity that came with lack of information and equipment. So, in one way or another, we all owe a debt of gratitude to those pioneers who did the shitty work of weeding through thousands and thousands of random seeds so we could reap the benefits today.

That being said, the only real difference in growing out your bagseed and growing a strain is the millions of poorer genetic combinations that have been eliminated through controlled breeding. With that work, the breeders are able to convey to the growers how to grow them properly.

IMHO, if people are going to use bagseed and expect success, they are just going to have to pop way more beans to get something truly worth their effort. I can guarantee that if I was to pop 100 bag beans knowing what I have learned since my first random grow, that I could get something of good quality. I simply choose to use known genetics for the predictability.

If you are one of those pioneers out there who is looking to breed and name your own strain, good on ya. We need more of you, and no one is going to give a shit where it came from if it knocks em out when they hit it!

I think you are forgetting the excitement and expectations that come from your first grow. There will always be someone who has never seen a mj plant grow. Now just think about it, they plant that seed and within months that tiny little seed has grown FEET, and within months will be taller than any plant they have probably ever grown. Of course they(ME) am curious, "How the hell Tall Is This Thing Gonna Get!???"
How many new growers really expect a 6ft+ tall plant within just a few months? Now I've never seen the process the whole way through but Hell even I could tell you if you showed me a picture of your plant what the approximate height could be, or at least could say what it won't be, just chill and help newbies out and a year later newbies will helping others.

I think you sorely missed the point of my post. If you are going to come around telling me to chill in a thread I started, the least you could do is understand what I'm saying.

The friends of mine that were intended to read that will understand and appreciate it. I don't think I need to chill, because I don't think I'm saying anything aggressive.

That post above was meant to represent my feelings on bag seeds and mail order seeds. Anything you extrapolated out of there wasn't my intent, it was how you read it.

I'm not mad at you or anything, but like I said, the people in the conversation know exactly where I'm coming from.

I'm not saying your post was without merit. I think your insight from a beginner perspective is valuable and it's one I had not considered. However, if you exercised a little more tact, it would have been much better received.
If you want your perspective considered, extend the courtesy to others.

I hope the bagseed mail order seed thing was just out of frustration. I hope you do know the difference, the point of my post before yours was to try to illustrate that a little better.

I've been growing from bagseeds for over a decade and just this year I ordered seeds. It's great to get good genetics but there's still something about growing mystery seeds that is so fun. Ya never know what ur gonna get. And you can make it dank if you do it right. That's my favorite part of it; knowing that I can grow it better than what came in the original bag.

You're right though Mr. thread starter (forgot ur name) You really can't give someone concrete information on traits for a mystery seed.
