Server to busy. I'm willing to pay for a better one.
It is really annoying when I spend 20 mins writing a post and than can't post it because the server is to busy.
I understand this is a free site and it is supported solely by adds, but what is Sundance's aversion to charging us. I would much rather pay an annual fee of $10 and have a server that works rather than freeload on a server that doesn't.
Maybe some incentives for pay membership, or limiting the sections non-members can view, or a raffle.
I don't think my request for a new server is wrong considering I'm also offering suggestions to raise the money or limit the problems on the current one.
With that said, I still like this site...

maybe we could see if we could do an auction like icmag is doing for the 4/20 every once in a while, i know weedhound participated in it :hippy:

I would pay a small fee but that said, not many people like to pay for weed sites with CC. I would love not to see server busy I can understand why but it bugs ya.....:wtf:

I'm not suggesting making this a pay site. Simply making the option available for some kind of special treatment. A private board, random little sweepstakes with cheap prizes, anything that could be used as an incentive to get people to pay some money to use this service.

Why dont they just set up a donate button? People who CAN afford it, can donate. Those who can't afford it, don't have to pay anything. Simple as that.:hippy:

I agree why not a donate button? Every other site has one

Sounds decent, but I still think an optional pay section would be better. I've been on one other site that did that exact thing and it seemed to work. In order for the donation button to really make a decent profit, all these visitors who overload the server would have to contribute.
I would imagine donations would be smaller and less numerous than what could be made by offering an additional service on this site for a minimal fee.
I get the impression Sundance has some kind of aversion to making money off this site. If that is the case he could donate what ever is left over to a charity.
All I know is this site appears to need a better server but I don't expect him to pick up the bill for our benefit. He already provides a service for free to us here, the least we could do is help in that regard, assuming he is willing to do something of the sort.
I believe I have suggested the same thing in years past and nothing has come of it, so we will see what happens.

I deleted your post for obvious reasons. You can't just spread unsubstantiated gossip about the owner and expect things to be okay.
One wouldn't walk into a friend's house and rub their muddy feet on his/her couch would you? No, you're a guest in their house just as we are guests in sundance's house, and essentially what you were doing was "rubbing mud on his couch," lol as lame as it might be the analogy works.
As someone used to say, if anything else, you know where the door is.

I do that to. I also notice at around 12:00 AM central time every night the server gets over loaded.

Well... now, with a calm mind, i do understand what you mean, and i admit i did let myself to be carried away by the (old) feelings and i was impolite (to say the very least)... so, my apologies.

I wonder if it's for legal purposes. As it stands now, everything we say is easily viewable to the public. He may be afraid if their were a private section people might suspect illegal activities?

I noticed that between 2a.m. - 6a.m. USA Eastern time, it's usually impossible to get on this site. There have been many late nights where I wanted to just browse the forums and the site either never came up or was busy...quite frustrating. I'm not sure if it's a server issue, time of day when they do maintenance, or they're getting a lot of traffic. This site is still the most "low key" of MMJ sites I belong to so I can't complain. :hippy:

By the way last season I had 2 or 3 plants outside and one of the rabbits ate them, but yeah... I'm up for payed subscription, something just for paid members.

alot of the forums I go to have a donate button, but the people who donate get special features like a little star by their name, etc...and it seems to work! most don't donate, but you see all kinds of people with little stars. and I rarely get a "server busy" message.

Jaggededges Idea is great. I have seen the idea put to power in many social, heavily populated forums. A "VIP" section or "Elite Stoner" section.
Give a few of the senior guys free membership into it to get it going and then setup the option to buy it. forum addicts love having special colored names or special status's on forums.
A donation option should also be added in addition.
ill add that I am so high right now i cant think so I hope this makes sense
EDIT:: I do agree the server is busy alot now! You could do a hotswap on your drives to a new server and get maybe tops 5 hours downtime for the change.
I'll donate.

They actually did this a long time ago, on the before cannabis.com marihemp boards, which this one end up sort of replacing. They had a gold membership and people would pay a one time fee for a bigger-sized avatar space, access to other sites, all kinds of stuff. It wasn't a bad idea back then and would work now.

when this site was more popular and a good source to hookup weed membership did not work. Donating never works on the internet that is why torrents and warez are so popular, because people will not part with their money when they can get it free.

when was that chameleon?
and that's a pretty broad generalization that's not even close to true!!! (about the downloading part.)

2004/2006 this was a major MOM site the current owner changed that.
and it is a general statement but you will find that the majority of the people that traverse forum sites like this adhere to it.
there are brilliant minds that create amazing open source software and their donation totals are abysmal while their download totals are through the roof.
someone mentioned legal, scenario : johnny pays for a cannabis website with moms credit card, should I continue?

i agree chameleon! but there is also plenty of success that doesn't get near the publicity because it harms the RIAA/MPAA (and others) fight to persecute people. when the fact of the matter is they have been ripping people off for years, legally, and laughing about it.
check out radioheads last album, in:rainbow (or something similar). they put it on there website, with no major label backing and let you pay whatever you wanted for it. from free to "regular" retail price ($10 i think). some people did download it for free while many paid. and i can't remember or find the actual figures, but they ended up making as much or more than they would have with a record deal.
it costs between $.85 and $1.15 to press and package a retail cd and the artist sees maybe a dollar of the retail sale price.
it's mereley people eating for free. and it's up to us as consumers (the most powerful group of people on the planet currently) to buck current trends and set forth new, more relevant ones!
definitely agree with the statement about most forum traversers!
good convo!

tried to reply to this post earlier but got the useall server to busy:mad:just got back on and checked how many uses. 24 members and 498 guests. no wonder why us members have trouble with all the guests takeing up all the space. imo guests should only be able to browse once for 30 mins to see if it's a site they want to join and to contribute to, they should then be given a choice to join or be blocked. it's not fair on us members.

Maybe that's just a scheduled maintenance time. I think a pay-for board is a bad idea. I wouldn't be able to afford to participate because I would consider that even $3.00 would buy me a few pounds of beans or rice. I know it sounds strange here in America, but it's true. And at the risk of humility, I must say that I think my posts have been a positive contribution to this site.
I'm no FBR or StinkyAttic, nor have I had any good yielding/high potency/quick to ripen grows. Nonetheless, there would be threads in the member's only section which would add a value to my life for which I unfortunately cannot reciprocate to SunDance.
However, if the issue is simply server capacity, is there a way to do cluster or cloud serving? What I mean is, if cann.com could upload a mirror to three or four different machines, which then distribute to three or four other mirrors, and send out svn updates every say five minutes or so, and then when we come to the site, you use the server's processing capacity to generate html which directs all the page elements to the least-trafficked mirrors at that time. Maybe each mirror could upload their avg % of capacity they are using each five minutes. Like bittorrent but done transparently to the web browser. Mirror servers could even have a dynamic ip, if it logs in to tell cann.com whenever the ip changes. If that was the case even I could help host. The only traffic that would have to go out from the cann.com main server would be the updates to the first tier of mirrors, plus a small html that nests in the "real" html from a mirror. If bandwidth is more expensive than cpu cycles, this would be as far as I can tell an elegant solution for many, many financially challenged websites. And whoever is running a mirror could get a nice big Supporter badge next to their avy. :) Now if someone else does this, I want you guys to be my witnesses that I thought of it first. :)

These forums are my favorite and original home but I do belong to 3 others.
I think a good suggestion for the future would be to give everyone a heads up when the forums are going to be shut down. :hippy:

I like this board for some reason. I come here and lurk some time when i'm not otherwise tied up. It was a long winter and I shut down all communication while the indoor stuff was going on. But it's spring now and the outdoor show is off to a running start and the house is all cleaned up for BBQ season!
I like this site. It's a wealth of knowledge for the casual grower.
I'd make a donation for a better server. I'd even like to recommend some virtual or dedicated linux server hosts if interested....perhaps put your server in a country with more richous laws.
Have in house MMJ seed sales with seeds from members who wish to donate seeds lots that they have grown using the information delved from this wonderful site. How many seeds do you want? I got WAY too many for my needs. I'm sure many others would donate seeds too. (I followed some info on here about that silver solution to make female plants produce pollen where you spray it....lolz...that shit REALLY works! These female plants pollenated everything in the room!)
Once you got a few hundred thousand seeds donated from members, incorporate, sell seeds, sell shares and pay your taxes. Do it all legal and shit.
This site is critical to the future. If this site wasn't here, the next generation of pot would be shitty. We must look to the future!!! Who would be growing the next generation pot for our future presidents? Who would be growing the pot for our future gold medalists? Our authors, our artists, our astronauts? Who would be growing the future pot for us, the regular people?
The future is at stake here people!
Please! Everyone reading this send in a donation right now to help purchase a "Donate Now" button for this website!
Every little bit helps!

If you want to upgrade the web site and server why not sell advertising space? You can create another sub-forum called "dispensary listings" where dispensaries can advertise their web site or list their address with a map, menu and anything else relevant. They should be categorized by states which have legalized medical marijuana. With more and more states legalizing medical marijuana and dispensaries popping up, advertising is going to be critical to their business and what better place to advertise then on this forum? I did notice there's a few advertisements in the Southern California sub-forum now listing menus and prices. That's lost income to the web site. Just my :twocents:
