A popular video circulating on You Tube shows the discovery of a spy camera
and a microphone hidden inside a digital TV converter box. Such devices are
part of a government and industry surveillance program that is undoubtedly
connected to the forced digital TV switchover being rolled out in the UK and
US.

â??I could not believe my eyes,â?� states the blurb accompanying the video clip,
â??I have a friend who is kind of a conspiracy theorist. He was trying to
convince me that many of the digital TV convert boxes that are coming out
have microphones and cameras built into them. Knowing a bit about
electronics I bought one of these devices opened it up fully intending on
proving him wrong. To my surprise he was right. This device has both a
miniature camera lens and what looks like a microphone. I was so shocked I
took pictures and video. Please send this out to everyone you know who is
using one of these devices.â?�

The camera and microphone were hidden inside a MAGNAVOX TB110MW9 Digital to
Analog Converter box.

The need to mandate a mass roll out of such hidden surveillance devices is
undoubtedly one of the reasons that governments in both the UK and the US,
as well as eventually the entire planet, are overseeing a forced switchover
to digital TV and killing traditional analogue broadcasts. The vast majority
of TVâ??s require a digital decoder box to receive digital TV transmissions.

By installing covert spy devices and hidden microphones inside our all but
mandatory digital boxes, the government and whatever corporate entities get
a slice of the pie, have direct access to our living rooms. This is the
ultimate Big Brother scenario whereby the majority of Americans and
Europeans will have Orwellian telescreens watching their every move.

Many will dismiss such claims as conspiracy fodder, but the fact is that
Americans have been spied on for decades, previously under the Echelon
program and more recently as part of the Bush administrationâ??s warrantless
wiretapping program.

As former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice recently revealed,
â??The National Security Agency had access to all Americansâ?? communications â??
faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications,â?� Tice claimed. â??It
didnâ??t matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and
you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all
communications.â?�

As we highlighted three years ago, private industry and eventually
government is planning to use microphones in the computers of an estimated
150 million-plus Internet active Americans, as well as similar devices
installed inside digital TV boxes, to spy on their lifestyle choices and
build psychological profiles which will be used for surveillance and
minority report style invasive advertising and data mining.

Digital cable TV boxes, such as Scientific Atlanta, have had secret in-built
microphones inside them since their inception in the late 1990â??s and these
originally dormant devices were planned to be activated when the invasive
advertising revolution was being rolled out, a watershed that is quickly
becoming a reality.

The advent of digital video recording devices such as TiVo (Sky Plus in the
UK) introduced the creation of psychological algorithm profiles - databases
on what programs you watched, how long you watched them for, and which
adverts you liked or didnâ??t like. This information was retained by TiVo and
sold to the highest bidders - an example being Janet Jacksonâ??s wardrobe
malfunction during the 2003 Super Bowl half-time show; TiVo were able to
compile lists of how many people had rewound the clip and how many times
they had replayed it.

In 2006, Google announced that they would use in-built computer microphones
to listen in on userâ??s background noise, be it television, music or radio -
and then direct advertising at them based on their preferences.

In March last year, Comcast announced that they were â??experimenting with
different camera technologies built into devices so it can know whoâ??s in
your living room.â?�

The cameras would use body-form recognition to confirm who was in the room
and then tailor program recommendations, as well as commercials, to target
that member of the family.

Technically conspiracy is "an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot." This has already occured & is factual as in people really finding cameras and mics in their Digital TV converter boxs. Most likely not ALL boxes have digital camera.

I call bullshit on this! Not that I'm denying the fact that our own government is spying on us. That much is very clear, particularly in todays society. Using covert methods they are able to monitor our phone calls, find out everything we've bought, set up psychological profiles to predict what we would want to buy, and all that stuff I totally believe in. What I have a hard time believing is how dumb the government would be to actually implant video survaillence in our converter boxes. I mean seriously lets think about this from a logical stand point.

Now I have no doubt that they are monitoring us but most certainly not in this way. Why do you ask? Because if I was trying to spy on someone I would use the most covert methods available and putting a camera in a tv converter is not covert in the least bit. Any idiot like this fake on youtube could open up a box and clearly see a video camera. And if this idiot can do it than more idiots can do it and eventually the word would spread like wild fire and guess what? You have a failed attempt at monitoring your citizens. I believe the government is watching us, but I don't believe the government is watching us in the most obvious ways that can easily be detectable like this myth going around. Come on guys, lets stay in touch with reality here.

My sister actually has the same brand of converter box. I will check it out and find out if it is for real.

This is believable and I would think that if Govt is indeed putting cams/mic in these they sure would not put them in all of them. Think about sheer numbers like the lottery, not everyone picks the numbers. Even if they put them in 10-25% of boxes, how many would that be? Of those, how many do you think would look inside? Then, what are the odds the guy that may actually find one is familiar enough with electronics to say for ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY they are cams? It is retarded enough to fit the Govt perfectly, just look at their track record. They spend BILIONS AND BILLIONS on retarded ass policy and pork every day, why would this be any different. What we watch on tv is monitored, why not watch us watching till they are busted? They will just deny responsibility.

I totally believe it..it makes sense to do something like this, targetting lower income individuals primarily..of course even people with money would rather not pay for cable, but the majority of people getting these boxes I'll bet are lower income/working class people..

well i know i could go get a little camera and a mic and put it inside the box and then on video "discover" it.

i think that the technology would be more like your tv being not only a receiver but also a transmitter with instead of speakers 2- way receivers, the screen is also a big camera. in essence. not some 1950s james bond kinda crap.

as far as big brother spyin on us um yeah i do beleive they are, dont forget the days of the red scare.

New TV's are already expensive enough, they couldn't add something that you're describing and it be cost effective, besides, the government can't give us coupons for new TV's..They can for a simple converter box though.

I opened mine and there is no camera in it, or mic. I guess you could say that I was a little disappointed that I did not discover one in mine. All this paranoia and no proof! Putting my hat back on anyway. :tin foil hat:

I have known some computer techs in the past and one that can get into your PC and tell you eveywhere it has ever been, plus more. Is chief of security of a gov't section. He does believe this original posting and I swear, could have written it. He has been saying this since the mid '90's about the TV boxes. Said they don't need to add anything they are 2 way devices.

Somehow, I have my doubts, either way. Like who am I in the big scheme of things anyway! I have flown by a few of the other forums now and see this one seems to be nothing comparitively speaking. Surely, this is a better way to spy.

We already have local camera's hooked up to the net. Someone tells you theyare in town, check out the local hardware's cam corder and check! Doesn't that make you feel real safe! Google your address and check out every item in your yard! They can see through windows if they want to, without you ever seeing them or for that matter, your next door neighbor. YOu have to be pretty much paranoid or doing something pretty bad to be so concerned.

The less guilty you feel, perhaps the better you'll feel and enjoy what you are doing!

Certainly a convincing story, either way. i overlook one of the 'black holes' our Gov't. denies. Years ago we observed an explosion from underground come out of it. Never to this day any explanation! So let me see if i got this right. the gov't is spending millions on cameras and mics, more millions to keep it quiet, and billions that it would require to have a staff watch and analyze the tape, then somehow use this info to attack you.

well, i'd say a good 70-75% of these boxes are going to older citizens who have not bought a tv in many years and most of the rest to the poor(same reason). so if youre too old to buy or too poor to afford a new tv you're probably not involved in anything hyper-criminal to begin with.

so what purpose does it serve? more targeted advertising? boy wouldnt that be a shame, maybe i wont have to see anymore masingill or tampon ads. if thats the case then please put a camera in there...lol
