Anyone have instructions for Hannah Ph meter?
So i took my newly purchased, used digital ph/ppm meter up to the local hydro shop so i could get it calibrated. Well the guy didn't know shit about hannah meters and after messing with it for a bit, he gave up. I did buy 7.0, 4.0 and ppm calibration solution.
My question is: Why does it say while calibrating ph, "use 6.86"? it use to say use 7.01. then it goes to use 4.01. So I do all of that, using 7.0 where it says 6.86. Still reads funny. maybe i need a new electrode? Any info on the meter would be great! thanks

Here's the calibration instructions:
Unwrap meter from packaging.
Sort plastic from paper inserts.
Recycle according to your town's recycling program. The meter can just go in the trash. ;)
Sorry... I couldn't resist. Hanna makes crappy products.
Okay. The reason there are 2 values, 6.86 and 7.01, is that the NIST buffer 'neutral' is actually 6.86. (.025 molar disodium phosphate at 25'C is pH 6.86). You have to hit the 'mode' button during the calibration to tell the meter you are using the NIST buffer set (4.01-6.86-9.18) instead of the more common 4.01-7.01-10.01 buffers.
So read the packaging on your calibration standards to see which calibration mode you will need to run.

Stinky, can you put that in laymans terms please? lol I know my meter is junk, thats why it won't go to 7.01 when i hit mode, it just turns off. I think its going to go in the trash and i'll keep playing with my ph sticks. damnit

Huh!? It's not supposed to do that!
So what I hear you saying is that you have a meter that is permanently stuck with the NIST standard curve settings and you can't change away from the 6.86 one? Can you get the NIST standards instead? Or does your calibration buffer/standard have '7.01' on the package?
Hrm. I'm going to go find the manual and link to it. Hopefully this is a simple issue where you have to hit something else before 'mode', like actually be in the calibration/standardization window and it will work.
Can you send the thing back?
Okay here is the link:

THANK YOU! for the instructions. It is definitely stuck, and it is definitely used, bought at half price from a big timer such as yourself. He has 3 of em and told me one didn't calibrate correctly so if i got that one, bring it back, and he'll exchange it. too bad i lost his freakin number. lol

Lol! I'm not sure if I qualify as a big timer, but big timers such as myself... we tend to lose our own numbers pretty frequently... betcha that if he's big, and you manage to find that number, by the time you find it it will give you this message:
"We're sorry, but the TracFone number you are trying to reach is no longer in service"...
Good luck with this, and future, crappy meters!

Have you tried new batteries ????
I have a hanna and I have the book, I think. Yes they are crappy and hard to manage. I think I changed batt's and mine worked again. The last time I had to change electrode cause it wouldn't cali, man you can almost buy another for that..
Next meter will be worth the money.

I use a Hanna Also, thought because i see them around alot they were good meters, found out the hard way thats not the caase. What do you reccomend that won't break the bank?

A Milwaukee, if you can find one.

I bought a Controlwizard ppm/ph/temp meter not long ago. Its really been a pain in the ass. readings of 100°, 44ph, and 1000 ppm on cold RO water. Looks like I'm out $150

LMAO!
edit: the pen type or the mounted, possibly EC, TDM, PH type? which one is better/preferred?

ive been using my red pen hannah for a long time and havent had an issue.guess i got the only working one on the market.whats the issues that people are facing with there products? im honestly querious,i wonder if its on her last leg...so i dont mean to hi jack this thread but i thought it would be better than making another one on the same issue. so with that sed, what are the problems people are facing, i wonder how many people have jumped on the screw hannah band wagon.first hand info would be really nice to know and just might persued me to switch for better results.

shit...i just bought the red pen hannah the other day!! as im waitin for it to come in the mail i come across this damn thread....as i was scrolling down i was seeing nothing but negative comments about it til yours disrupt. i hope mine works :(

just be gentle with it. watch the glass probe and try not to knock it into anything, don't throw it around the room and you should be fine. but if you notice not a single person has sed any sort of realistic response or first hand response on what the issues are with it.

The calibration sucks, I cant get it down enough because thats as far as the little screw will go.

well i finally made the piece of crap get on the 7.01 calibration mode, and switched from 7.01 solution to 4.01 solution. The reason why mines a pos is it takes forever to stabalize, it will keep going up or down and sometimes it gives false readings. I've seen it show 7.5 on 6.5 water and after putting it in the 7.0 solution, and getting a steady 6.95-7.2 out of it, it will show 6.5 in the water, right where my test strips are showing. I think its fairly acurate but it needs to stay in the 7.0 solution before testing water.

Yup- the main problems are, that I've hear of or seen:
-Too delicate for growroom conditions
-Long stabilization time
-Inability to read low ionic strength solutions accurately- this is the most important.
Remind me to post a pH electrode maintenance sticky one of these days, lol... There are ways to slap a slow electrode back into shape.

can today be that day! just a friendly reminder :) God I love you stinky, always helping you're boys out!
