Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
So, I have this plant it is an Elvis-Diesel, which I am very fortunate to have. Hard to find and I had to bring it from east to west. Unfortunately, it seems as if little Elvis has hermied, but very slightly. I am pretty sure it was stress, room got really hot for a couple days :( I would say that the plant is about 95%, as I have only found a couple sets of balls and there are hairs everywhere else!. Anyways I have been plucking the balls and intend to harvest the plant. I know that seeds from a hermaphrodite are unstable and produce mostly hermie seeds and that a clone will take on the same genetic properties as the mother, but since the mother was female before the stress, can I clone this plant and it will be female, or would it not be a good idea? My plan was to throw the Elvis back into veg for a couple weeks, after I harvest her/it and then clone. I have been doing a lot of reading, but have been unable to find an answer to this particular question. Any advice and thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I never cloned anything, but reading suggests that it is possible to clone ANY plant. get your clone from a portion of plant with no balls. I don't see why it won't work. At worst, you won't be any worse off than u are now. Please update results. I am very interested to know how this works out!

Gene mutations are gene mutations.
You will not be abe to clone without your clone being a hermie.
End of story.

Thanks for the input guys! HARDDON, the reason I was confused about this is that the hermie in question was a female, before it stressed. This is why I was having such a hard time answering this for myself, because in this case it wasn't a gene mutation right? The hermaphrodism was caused by an environmental factor, but in any event, I am going to give this a try in a month and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, I thought preserving a strain was worth a try. I'll be watching for update. I hate to see genetics end badly:)

Harvest her branches ( leave some green), chop off as many of the flowers as you can and re-vedge. The genetics will still hermi if put under the same stress conditions, so try to avoid those (heat you said ?).

Returning a plant back to veg is never a good idea. Why didn't you clone before flower?
-
Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
These plants were grown from seed, and I have never cloned from sex, so unfortunately we didn't know she was a she until it went into flowering and now that we have a female, well sort of, this is kind of a last ditch effort to preserve the genetics.

Just let her hermie and keep the seeds that she makes.

That will make those seeds produce nothing but DITCH DIRT and SCHWAG!

This is exactly correct. The tendency to hermi under specific conditions is genetic. If you fucked up and you know it, fix that and if the plant STILL hermies under correct conditions, it is a lost cause.

This is completely incorrect. Seeds from a hermi will give rise to hermaphrodite-prone females of approximately equivalent quality to the parent.
You know that force-hermed mothers are the source of commercial feminized seeds, right?

Thanks everyone for some insight on this. I appreciate it. I'm gonna try the revedge and clone and see if I can make it through the next grow with out any fuck ups.

Re veg and clone is my current state. Took 14 clones from two revegged moms over the last 3 days. When I tried before flower all my clones didn't root for some reason so hopefully this time will go better. I changed up my technique, did some controlled tests,(some have root hormone, some don't, for example)
Stinky thanks for backing me up on the hermie seeds. That's how I got my bank going.
Funny thing with the hermies when I flowered some hermied and other didn't.

How does becoming a hermie plant make it schwag and dirt if it wasn't schwag and dirt tot start with? i'm afraid I don't follow that.

and Ozzy....get some Reverse by Dutchmaster. It will solve your hermie issues unless they are due to a continual light leak.

Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
Herms are caused by:
Light leak/irregularity
High temps
Low air flow
Overripe plant
Bad genetics
Bad grow skill
Reverse will keep seeds from forming, no matter HOW much you abuse your plants! lol

I've had a few hermie with Reverse when.....AFTER the two recommended doses of Reverse are used and at some point after that I've screwed up the lighting (more than once) and had some hermie.
Other than that I've done everything on Stinky's list (wow....i'm so talented LOL!!) and she's right.....nothing else hermied no matter what torture I put it through.

I took clones from my re vegged, hermie mother and just made sure to correct the issue (light leakage) and the clones didn't hermie at all. I was surprised how well they did.

See?! You will be fine! Take reasonably decent care of your plants and they will love you back. :D

Weedie reccommending Reverse? Damn, almost had another heart attack!
Glad you've come around to better living thru chemistry.
BTW on a serious note; I was sorry to read about your health issues but glad to hear you responded well to treatments. I lost my wife to cancer over 20 years ago. For the past 18 years I've worked with a hospice organization and 15 years with a cancer (fighting) group. I'd like to share with you and others two observations over that course of time.
1) MJ appears to have an anti-cancer component (anti-oxident?) to it, IMO that component is enhanced by vaporizing vs. smokeing.
2) apricot pits seem to also have an anti-cancer component (B-15?) and seem to slow or stop many progressions. And strangely seems to help with pain reduction in later stages.
My house mate is a Mohawk indian, either 89 or 91 years old (SS admin or Union card) who I met when he had "less then 6 weeks to live"....that was over ten years ago. Stage 4 all these years. Vapes at least six times and eats at least 15 apricot pits a day. A poster child for alternative medicne.
These two items ARE NOT an alternative to conventinal medicine, but can be used along side, with out harm, to what ever treatments you choose for yourself.
(sorry admin for the thread hi-jack)

So much talk about light leaks I thought i'd post my question. Will holding a lighter up to look at the plants in the dark cause them to hermie? what about a flash from a camera once or twice? I've made these mistakes a few times but realized I should never disturb them while their sleeping. Should i get reverse just in case?
-
Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
I love Reverse and use it without fail for a couple of reasons. one is that we live in the country....and end up with electrical outages fairly often. I personally think that you can get away with ONCE flashing a light at them.....the second time on out with ANY lighting (yes lighters, cameras) and you are putting your foot in the first journey towards hermies.
So I say yes,. use Reverse because you can't always plan the future. And no, don't take photos or a "quick peek" or anything else during lights off unless you want to chance hermieing your plants.

Thanks Weedhound, for the excellent advice. I won't do it anymore. I wish the guy at my local hydro shop would stop telling me he knows his shit, and how he's been doing it for 15yrs, and actually help me! But thats why I'm here instead :) He told me he doesn't use reverse and would never recomend it because it doesn't change the sex of the plants. I told him I wouldn't be using it to change the sex and I would only be using it to prevent hermies. Still didn't make sense to him. lol

Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
It's a rare strain that would hermie under so little and so weak light as a lighter gives off. A camera flash, I don't know. It's doubtful. I also think that Reverse is supposed to be run preventatively and by the time you are looking back and asking these questions, it might be too late. I'm not 100% on this. However, if you exposed them to light stress over a week ago and still have not seen any male parts developing, you are probably fine.
Edit: Reverse functions by preventing seed formation as I understand. They use it to make seedless cucumbers and watermelons too... it's not just for pot, haha!

Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
Stinky, you have me thinking now. Do you think lowes or HD or anywhere besides a hydro shop would carry reverse? Since it is for plants of all types and what not! I just hate driving across town every other day to satisfy my new desires :) But yea, I shocked them quite a few times last week and earlier on with lighters and flashes. It might be that i'm too new of a grower to notice male parts, but it seems there are none so far! I'm starting to think I'll pass on the reverse but then i remember the shitty day last week when my lights didn't come on until i manually turned them on, 3 hours late. So maybe it would be a good idea to grab a bottle of reverse at all costs. btw, i'm almost at 50 posts, so very shortly i'll be posting pics of the beautiful ladies, and i wouldn't mind a real lady checking them over for any male parts I might miss :) if you catch my drift!

Aw the big 5-0, congrats buddy. I know one round I accidentally had my lights on 10/14 for half my flowering. The extended darkness prob won't hurt them just light during dark. You should be fine I think.

Lol! I am a qualified professional when it comes to inspecting male parts. :D
There's no way anything short of a really well stocked specialty garden center would have Reverse. Most home gardeners don't care whether their fruits have pips in em.
Just go look for tiny ~3mm long things that look like small bunches of bananas... those are male parts.
-
Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
hahaha! I couldn't find bunches of banannas if they were staring me right in the face. I need a female to find male parts, it only makes sense. only a female would even wanna go looking for male parts. I'll give it a try but if i don't come back with anything in the next 5 minutes i'm going to need a hand. ok?

Here ya go, Nanners. I'm not big on shemales, just don't dig too deep, or your butt may be sore the next day.

Not too sure I agree wholeheartedly with this. Just because a lady was stressed into hermaphrodism, it doesn't necessarily mean that the genetics are bad.
For what it's worth, this is something I do a couple of times a year. with no ill effects: (but then I do have seperate veg/flower rooms)
I stress a stable lady with aspirin to induce nanners. After harvesting the pollen, I chop her back, downsize the pot, and re-veg. Her remaining nanners dry-up, and no further sign of hermaphrodism from that point forward, and she becomes a clone mother for at least one crop. Clones are normal and stable from these, and the re-vegged lady continues merrily on her way to being healthy, happy and bulky.
The point is...re-vegging resets the growth to it's original stability. Works better for this using the bonsai re-veg technique in my signature...but it works.
However, if the genes are mutated to begin with, there is no real hope of 'resetting' their genetic code, but you wouldn't want to clone these anyway.

WRONG. It's a useful technique I use on virtually every crop.

Check the re-veg links in my signature. Good luck, it's an awesome technique.

Clone a hermaphrodite? Can't find an answer...
Avoid re-vegging by cloning for sex and always keeping backup clones of your plants when you put the mother in flower. Yields can suffer and it may take a long time before you can get healthy clones off a re-vegged plant. Some people can get fine results but many more can't. I've suffered a couple tragic genetics losses myself when re-veg failed. I do not recommend depending on the ability to re-veg your plant to keep a genetic line going. Save time and headache and keep a constant supply of clones alive.

Practice makes perfect. It's a worthwhile technique all gardeners can benefit from.

i was always told by the man who taught me how to grow that a hermaphidite plant will produce feminized seeds , and i never beleived him until we got one a couple yrs ago and he just left it and let it do its coarse, it got to be about 2.5 feet tall and was seed from top to bottom and we used those seeds the next yr with 95% of the seeds being female with the occasional male witch is pretty darn good, the strain was white Rhino and all ill say is we got a nice crop off that yr all thanks to a Hermie plant that we all thought was junk!
