Colin Powell endorses Barack Obama
Colin Powell endorsed Obama for president. It was a wonderful interview. I have always respected Colin Powell.
Perhaps this is the October surprise everyones talking about.
Oct. 19: Former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.), Chuck Todd, political roundtable - Meet the Press, online at MSNBC - MSNBC.com
Colin Powell endorses Barack Obama
How is this a surprise? People have been speculating this for months.
So tell me Mr.Powell, I guess forgoing 90% of your personal views for a candidate is the thing to do this year?

Actually, I was being sarcastic. I know it was "expected".
None the less, it was an intelligent interview that I thought explained the reasons behind his endorsement quite nicely.
After McCain's comments today about Sarah Palin "is a direct counterpoint to the liberal feminist agenda for America" I nearly puked!! What cave did this man crawl out of? Is he saying equal rights, equal pay and the right to chose what to do with your own body, and the right to chose how to plan your family is a liberal feminist agenda?!
Welcome back to the days of being barefoot and pregnant! God would approve!

Woops my bad, it's hard to tell if someone is being sarcastic online.
Though I do not agree with McCain's stances on women's rights (I am very much pro-choice) I feel that your satire above is very much wrong and extreme.

I'm sorry if I've offended you.(you know I luv you!;) ), but I feel very strongly about this. I can't have any more kids so it wont affect me directly, but I very much worry for my daughter. I want her to have the same choices I had.
Everyone has their deal-breakers for a candidate. For some its pro-cannabis, for me its pro-choice.

No no, I agree with you completely hun about the pro-choice stuff(Your one of my faves on hee and you know it haha).
I want my future daughter (whenever that occurs) to have more rights than I have now (I see politicians stepping all over our rights as women and as human beings in general). I know that McCain doesn't agree with me on these things so I weighed out all of my priorities. And though it is extremely hard to grit my teeth and bear it (when it comes to pro-choice things) I just hope to god that enough pro-choice politicians are in the house, senate, congress, etc. to knock down any attempts t0 get rid of Roe vs. Wade.

I think it was a fairly tough decision for him. He's been a conservative for a lot of years. But I think like a lot of conservatives he see's that the repubs aren't really conservatives any more. And he seems to think its time to open a dialogue with other people that are different than ourselves. Long overdue.

This is no surprise to me!!!
Colin Powell is an intelligent person.
He has seen first hand the way the NeoCons have shaken this country to its foundation.
He knows its time for change!!!
As do the people of America, don't forget to vote!!!

his endorsement might have actually meant something if he had done it months ago, most people have already decided who they are voting for and this really isn't going to change their minds

Powell is a moderate Republican and he said he was troubled by the drift to the right of the Republican Party. I agree that it has gone too far to the right, and I think that is a problem for a lot of moderate Republicans. Powell described almost exactly the same misgivings I have about McCain.
He said he would be concerned about any more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court.
He also said he was very troubled about the kind of campaign McCain is running --- the focus on Ayers, the xenophobia, trying to label Obama as "socialist." He was very put off by that, and I think a lot of moderate Republicans are offended by it too. He said that the strategy was very "narrow" and divisive and what the country needs is a much broader and inclusive way of dealing with things.
He said he watched the two candidates and how they handled the financial crisis and he found McCain lacking. McCain seemed to him to be constatntly shifting his response every day with a new idea, while Obama was much steadier.
I thought the Meet the Press transcript was interesting and I saw a short interview on CNN that was also interesting. I think Powell gave voice to the frustrations of many moderate Republicans. His point if view is a very moderate one, and you could tell that his support for Obama is not coming from a strongly partisan perspective. So often all the voices you hear are from partisan hacks who try to spin everything into a positive for their own candidate or a negative for the opposition, and this was a much more thoughtful, reasaoned and nuanced point of view.
The ironic thing to me is that I always thought of McCain as being a moderate Republican, but he has shifted so far to the right and he has adopted so many dishonorable, nasty, partisan, hate-mongering tactics, that I don't think of him as moderate at all anymore. I used to think of McCain as someone who could reach across the aisle, but he is burning down all those bridges with how he is campaigning. Powell did a great job of describing that same frustration I feel with McCain.

Here is the CNN clip I saw. It's apparently right after his Meet the Press announcement, and he took questions from other channels' reporters oustide the building.
He is a smart, moderate and reasonable man. And I think he makes a lot of great points:
