Northern Lights question:
Some time ago, I was given 4 Northern Lights seeds. Unfortunately, only one grew and it turned out to be male. I'm planning to cross it with my current mystery-strain that I've been growing.
The odd thing is that I've just been traveling about the interweb and discovered that N.L. is supposed to be an Indica dominant strain - which, judging from the leaves, the plant in my bloom chamber very much is not. In fact, this thing is a poster child for what a Sativa should look like.
I actually found a couple of seed sites that specifically describe Northern Lights as having very broad leaves. Now, I'm not complaining because it is specifically for the clearly Sativa genetics that I'm bothering with this cross, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular strain that might be able to shed some light on the issue.

I never heard of a NL sativa pheno, but i sure am no pro. Maybe within all the different numbers of NL, there exists a sativa pheno.
More likely whomever you got the seeds from was mistaken.

Northern Lights has gone through several releases from #1 to #5 and they do exhibit variations in the leaf set. Try searching for the different versions to get more info, sorry I can't remember which is the most Sativa-looking.

I've been bouncing about the web and reading what I can find on it - at this point I rather doubt if this actually was N.L. - and if it was then I can't really be sure what it was pollinated by. I know it was grown in a greenhouse in Indiana by a friend of a friend. The person that passed them on to me said she had saved them for several years because it was just some phenomenally good bud.
Since the only one that grew was a male, I can rule out hermie/self pollination.
It took 35 days under 12/12 to produce pollen - so I'm thinking that I'm dealing with very Sativa genes with a LOOOOONNNNGG bloom time. This doesn't seem consistent with what I've read on N.L. so either this is just a random Sativa or perhaps a random Sativa male crossed with a N.L female????
Oh well, whatever it may be - I've now got pollen to play with and I just moved two small girls into my bloom chamber that I intend to cross it with - one is a nice mystery strain that I've been cloning from an original bagseed mother, and the other is an Afghoo clone with a very short - 54 day - bloom time.

I have never heard of a Pure Northern Lights sativa dominant... There are many crosses out there.. I had some NL5xSensiStar(CosmicNights) that was sativa dom and gorgeous. Heres a picture of her,,maybe you have a cross?? good luck d:hippy:

k man let you in on an old secret, dominant indica hybrids have really broad leaves Purest indicas left in the world look almost like a sativas, and some dominate sativas have wide leaves. the really skinny skinny leaves are usually a Rudaralis, or the purest sativas ,and as you can see Rudaralis hybrids like lowrider have wide leaves, so You cant really identify an unstable cross. kinda confusing for me too

Thats right N.L. has visual buds in 7 days a male might take 3-4 days.
That would probably make a good cross, make that afgooy yeild more

not to be rude, but that is just so wrong ... bad info ... pure sativas have very narrow, even needle-shaped, leaves ... pure indicas always have broad leaves ... and Ruderalis ? ..., that garbage ditchweed, isn't even considered a true cannabis, by many of the world's Botanists ... it is a short, squat weed, that NEVER should be hybridized with true cannabis ... it will only lower the genetic qualities of good cannabis ... yes, it is my opinion, but I base it on experience ... in the 1960's, GREED encouraged growers to start using indicas, to speed up harvest times, and increase yields ... the quality of the landrace sativas suffered greatly, and are virtually extinct now ... the 'age of the hybrids' has helped in some ways, but has also broken the great lines ...
for the record, 'Northern Lights' began as a pure indica, and over the years, has been tinkered with a 'bit' of sativa ... if it's 'sativa-dominant', it really can't be called a 'Northern Lights' ... :smokin:

I have no complaints over AFs so far. Fast, potent, and a great supplement to a normal grow. I think you should come sample some of my white dwarf Reaper because after you leave high as a kite, you might not look so pessimistic towards AFs. I've had people offer me $50 for 1/8 already and I take that as a compliment. From a lot of reading I've done, it seems the older AFs sucked. However there are lots of new strains...Attitude Seeds has an entire section devoted...and many pictures and logs prove to me that there is hope for AFs. Just my two cents.:hippy:
Back to the actual thread topic...I've only had 1 kind of NL from someone who regularly grows it. Great all around strain. I heard #5 is best but I don't know differences in leaves from NL1-5, etc. Tasty strain in the vape too.:hippy:

I, too, have been told NL#5 is the one to choose ... I saw a thread once, that explained the breeding differences in the NL#1-5, and of course, there's the hybrids of those, too ... I 'think' Joey Weed's Northern Lights is a hybrid of several varieties (but, don't quote me on that) :jointsmile:
