First Time Caller...

Hi,

Been looking through the curtains at the site for a while, great place, lots of info and finally decided to give it a go.

Have a small problem with a couple of our plants, think it could heat stress, maybe a nute deficiency as well and was hoping that someone could help.

I know I need to get a ph testing kit and will be doing so ASAP. Looking through other threads in this group, the yellowing on the bottom leaves looks like it could be linked to heat stress when we switched from the fluro to the HPS and those were some of the only leaves around at the time. They were under the fluro for about 2.5 weeks and have been under the HPS for about a week now. Have a 4â?� extractor fan in the tent (Bud Box 75x75x160) as well as a fan blowing air across the top of the plants.

Iâ??m sure all you people know what itâ??s like on your first grow, would be very grateful if someone could put my mind at rest as to what could have caused this. None of the new leaves that are coming through are discoloured, only the bottom leaves on a couple of them.

It does look a little like heat stress but your temps aren't up high enough to do that. You might back the light off further for a while.

Thanks for the feedback Killerweed, when the HPS lamp went in, we didn't have the fan at the time and the temps were getting a bit high. Since we have put it in though the temps have leveled off.

You think these leaves will recover, let the plant do what it needs for them or cut them off? Everything else that is coming through seems to be fine, just those few early leaves.

Also, does anyone use the bio bizz nutes? Are these safe to use every feed (2-3 days apart when soil looks like it needs it) or is is best to use them 1 in every 2/3 feeds?

I'm not sure they needed nutes just yet. It's usually better to give it to them slow in the start, roughly 1-2ml per litre probably every other watering, maybe even every 3rd watering (water, water feed) then building up to the 4ml/litre full dose. Though there are varying opinions on feeding schedules. The plants will "tell" you when they need something and then you get a feel for it.
I use BioBizz (Grow and Bloom) and I think they're good nutes.

The HPS may be a bit close but I think as long as your temps are OK that is probably unlikely to be the issue.

Also do you have any ventilation other than the 4" fan? Extraction/filtration? They like fresh air.

You might want to get a pH tester to keep that aspect in line too. Get a digital or if you are on a budget the manual indicator tester kits are not too bad. If you can afford it, the blue lab truncheons are known to be a great piece of kit.


Perhaps someone who is a bit more tuned in with this kind of thing will pop into this thread, I am still very much new to all this.

Hard to tell from just a pic of low leaves.
Could be nothing more serious than leaves which had been receiving little light being cannibalized by your hungry plant for the N stored thereing when the incerased light intensity from thenew HPS triggered a growth spurt.
Pics of whole plant = more useful.

I have a carbon filter hooked up to the extractor and an intake hose, good circulation going through there as if I hold a thin piece of thread next to the intake vent, it gets sucked in. Should be plenty of fresh air being taken in.

I've moved the lights up a tad as the temp monitor I had seemed to be giving funny readings. Got a new one in there and the temps around the plants were varing by about 10 degrees F with this second monitor. It's sitting at about 80 degrees F now.

Thanks for the tip on the ph tester PJ, will be look in to that ASAP. Have been looking at all kinds of devices and from reading other threads, it seems a wise decision to invest a bit of cash in to a decent ph kit.

I will get a few full pics up of the plants next time I have a chance, just sorted them out and all the new growth coming through is nice and green. Yellow/brown colouring of the bottom leaves haven't increased since my original post, so fingers crossed it was either a bit of heat stress or as you say Stinky, lack of a bit of N and the plant had been sucking it in from them.

Hey guys and gals,

Just wondering if someone can confirm for me that this is a male plant (first 2 pics) I've taken it out of the grow room as from all the other pics I've seen, they look like balls. I like the 11 fingered leaf in pic 2 as well, are they normal?

Added a couple of pics of the other 3 I have in there, all confirmed females which I'm very pleased with as this is my first grow, none feminised seeds and have had a couple of small misshaps along the way. I guess I done right in getting white widow for the first grow as they do seem to be very forgiving!!

Anyway, if someone could confirm that the first two pics are a male plant I would be very appreciative.

Thanks GK, I'm pretty sure it is a male, what looks like loads of little nut sacks all over the place so he's now sitting in my kitchen. No chance of pollination as the grow room is in a complete different building.

Your new growth looks healthy. Don't overwater in that big pot too early, and you're good to go. I see no current problem with that plant. The damage is only on a couple fans and does not appear to be spreading.

That reply intended for myself there?!? I know you've posted in this thread, I'm just not sure what you mean about the damage to the fans and not spreading as I'm just trying to sex this plant.

I'm sure in pics 1 and 2 you can see the pollen sacks, if not let me know and I'll see if I can get a better shot, but I'm almost certain it's a male.

I've taken it out the room anyway, but would be grateful if you could confirm.

I ahve to say I was a bit upset when I spotted them as it's a nice bushy plant, but I've given him a good home to see out the rest of his days. And 3 out of 4 ain't bad for a first timer is it!!

I have a slight yellowing of the tips on one of my plants on the top leaves, is this a slight over nute? From reading around, it looks simular to over nute but being a newb I could be wrong.

Just come to the end of the second week of flowering, other two in there are looking fine, no yellowing tips so I can knock out heat stress, appreciate any answers.

It looks like some of the good info is already there, and the best advice given was to get a ph meter. If you want to know how much you're plants are really eating and how much you really need to feed them, buy a ph meter that has tds/ec built in. Then you will know if the nute levels are high or low and also be able to ph your water and check you're run off water to make sure you're soil has an acceptable ph level. Nutes can't be absorbed when the ph is off, simple as that. I'm no expert by any means, as I just bought my ph/tdc/ec meter and havn't even recalabrated it yet but i can already tell a ph/tdc/ec tester is an essential item in a hydro grow and is also extremely useful in a soil based grow.

Yeah, looks like slight overfert so don't feed the next 2 waterings. Also, did you recently re-pot? If not, how long has that plant been in that pot, and what is the pot volume?

Thanks for the feedback, just been adding plain old water for the last couple of feeds and she seems to be picking up again now.

All the plants are in 10L (2.2 gallon roughly) pots, been in them since their second set of leaves came through. I'm in to day 17 of flowering and the three girls are looking quite happy in the garden, you think they might need to be repotted at some point though? and will it not stress them a bit if I pot them up in flowering?

Pic below of the girls in the garden and a pic of the biggest and bushiest of the three. She's got about 12 flowering heads sprouting all over the place and roughly all of equal height.

The problem with the plant above (nute burn) seems to be fixed and she's been perking up, so happy days there. I do though I think have an issue with another plant.

Leaves through the middle of the plant seem to be yellowing, is this normal during flowering? (At day 27 of flower)

I haven't checked the root system as yet and I know I need to do this soon as they have been in these pots for a bit of time, but does this look like a nute lock out?

Any info or feedback appreciated.

That plant is the picture of health. Flowering plants will draw nitrogen out of leaves that don't get a lot of light, and use it elsewhere in the plant. It is a 'mobile nutrient'. Those yellow leaves were 'canna'balised (har har har) for their nutritious value to the rest of the plant.

Many thanks for the feedback, I thought it could be normal yellowing of leaves, but being a noob it is always nice to have confirmation.

I do have another question about one of the other plants though as the yellowing seems to be slightly more than the other two. Just wanting to know if this is normal as well or am I missing something here?!

The buds are still growing and frosting up nicely, just seems to be an exsessive amount of yellowing leaves on this one?

can you get pictures with the HPS turned off? I can't tell where the yellow leaf ends and the yellow light begins. That upcurl is worrisome.

More pics, hopefully a bit easier to see.

What causes the leaves to curl up like this? I've done a bit of searching but there are a multitude of different answers coming back from (K) deficiency, (Mg) or (Zn) deficiencies, bit of a mine field.

It's hungry. That plant is using up N too fast. Make sure your runoff pH is not too low, and if you have more than 3 weeks to harvest (looks like it), you can give ONE feeding with a quarter strength grow fert to slow down the yellowing.
What have you been feeding it in the last couple weeks? Just bloom, right? Does that bloom fert show a N number on the label at all, and if so, what?

EDIT- not K, Mg, or Zn def. N and Ca def or lockout. What was the date of your last re-pot?

Ok, here's the story.

The plants are being fed the range of bio bizz products - bio grow, bio bloom & top max. Soil is bio bizz all mix. I can't remember what the NPK is on the front of the bottles, grow and bloom do say, top max has nothing but I do not have them to hand at present.

PH of the the tap water is 6.8-6.9, ran 600ml through the plant last night and it came out at 6.5, acceptable levels.

Have been adding the following amounts of nutes per litre of water:

bio grow - 2.5ml
bio bloom - 3.5ml
top max - 1ml

Been feeding them all with about 500ml each. The bottles say on them to add this with every watering, so I have.

Have also been following the bio bizz feeding schedule (attached below) a bit, but obviously not to the letter, on when to start it with nutes etc.

This particular plant is one from an earlier question which I believe had nute burn (yellow tips on fan leaves) and yourself confirmed. Fed it only plain water for two feeds after that (500ml each time) and then started it back on the nutes (as per feeding above)

Being a newbie to this, I haven't transplanted them once. I now realise that transplanting as they grow up is better for them, so leason learned. I grew the seeds in peat pellets, then when the roots were showing through the bottom, put them straight in to the pots they are in now (10L - 2.2 gallon). Been in these pots for probably just over 2 month now - 4 weeks veg, coming to end of week 5 flower this Friday

The other two plants seem to be getting on alright, bit of yellowing but nothing as serious as this one.

Any more info you need to help with diagnosis, let me know.
