Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
The smell of a fresh thread...only to be stunk up by the dankness.
Container: For the past week I've been building my grow box. I took two 50 gal rubbermaid containers, spray-painted the inside semi-gloss white, and applied velcro around the rim of both boxes. This creates a reliable light-leak-free seal that keeps both boxes in place. (one upside down on the other)
Ventilation: I'm excited to see if my vision is going to work well, I took a twin window fan that has 3 speed settings and reversible fan settings. I can run both as intake, both as exhaust, or one opposing the other. I am still debating on cutting a few holes in the bottom to let the airflow pass upward through the plants but I am strongly considering it. I made a template to cut out the right shape in the top of the grow box (physical bottom of the top box), turned out nicely and all I need to do is seal it. When the lights are off, outside light can easily leak through the fan so I'm going to figure out something to at least dim the light, perhaps some porch screening on the inside of the box and some type of odor eliminating fabric on top.
Lighting: I'm still thinking about the amount of cfls to use; Right now I'm planning on lining the mid-section of the box with 6-10 smaller cfls, and suspending 4-5 bigger ones from the top and raising them as I go. This allows maximum penetration throughout the grow, allowing all lower bud sites to photosynthesize to full potential. Ideally, one 150-250 watt MH and HPS would max out the yield but there is certainly not enough room for that kind of intensity, so cfls will have to do. Studies have shown that cfls spike resin production, and give off lower amounts of heat with exceptional lumens per watt.
Plants: All you connoisseurs out there know first things first, quality over quantity. I plan on vegging 3 plants out 4 to 6 weeks (space permitting) LST if necessary, definitely for the Vanilluna due to its taller stature. Out of these 3 plants 2 will be Querkle by TGA Subcool Seeds and the other plant will be Vanilluna by the one and only DJ Short. Praying for at least 2 females, I will flower until they're done, no shorting here! Patience pays.
And I'm not predicting any dry yields, all I want is some superb smoke!
Genetics:
Querkle (TGA)- This Indica dominant hybrid has a great taste and out of a 5 plant test run all 4 females turned a nice shade of purple with warm temps throughout. Our goal was to recreate the nice grape flavor but ad some speed to the slow Urkle mom and the results are better than we expected and finding 2 keeper moms from the very small test run we did. Results from the field verify mild variation, good yields and fantastic flavor and colors. This hybrid has been featured in both Skunk and Hightimes magazine.
Phenotypes â??Two main females one Short and very purple with grape flavors, the variation is a slightly more SQ dom with a taller frame and more sativa buzz.
Height- Short and dence does well un topped but faster than Urkle.
Yield-Medium to heavy if extended veg time is given mainly due to bud density.
Indoor has only been tested so far
Best way to grow-Vegged to a large bush Or untopped in scrog.
Harvest Window-8 weeks
Sativa/Indica 20/80
Hybrid- Urkle x Space Queen
High type- Indica head and grape taste make it total all day headstash.
Smells: Grapes, fruit, berries, musty
_______________________________
Vanilluna (DJ Short)- (aka "Vanilla Moon") a structurally Kush hybrid of a cross between a female "Blueberry Sativa" (from the exact same seed stock that produced the mother of the "Blue Satellite"; the mother of the "Vanilluna" being large, green, symmetric with a distinct dominant main-stem and compact nodes, little variegation and long side-branches) crossed with the Original Blueberry male (a "stretch"-indica). This quasi-hybrid grows medium-tall Kush-like plants with short nodes, large, dark green foliage, thick-yet-sturdy hollow stems and tight, spade shaped buds of dense-but-elongated and swollen calyx/bract flowers completely coated in large, clear trichome of superior aromatics. Flower time is approx. 55â??60 days, with the more interesting oils developing in the very last week. "Vanilluna" possesses a complex-yet-subtle palate of a creamy, vanilla/honey blend with a hint of floral bouquet and sweet melon musk. The experience of the finished product is of top-shelf quality; smooth, comfortable, very long-lasting (hours) and dreamy. Upon final testing, a few individual plants from the "Vanilluna" provided an experience very similar to the "Blue Heaven", i.e. calming, clear and relatively anti-anxiety. Please note: approx. 15% of the plants from this line will sport variegated growth patterns. The other 85% will grow uniform plants with slight variation in height. Extended vegetative time coupled with early topping is recommended to increase yield, or run un-topped in a SOG-type system.
Indoor flowering 55 to 60 days.
Tag-a-long throughout the next 3-5 months and you'll be informed of any to-dos, no-to-dos, feeding schedules, smoke reports, and of course, the bud porn! :rastasmoke:

Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
Today I did some work on the box, I put five 27 watt cfls around the middle along with one 14 watt (due to one broken 27). I also have two more 27 watt 6500k lights and two 36 watt 2200k lights that I am going to suspend from the middle of the box. I'm going to use two shelf brackets and find a way to attach the lights to the ends, shouldn't be too hard.
Ventilation is doing well with the 6 lights on in there. I put two one inch holes on the bottom corners, air is pulling but I may need to put some more because the fan is straining a little bit. I need a hydrometer for humidity and temperature but I'm guessing its in the mid 70s with the lights on, could get into low 70s with the lights off.
Everything is looking go so far though! I got some neem oil that I'm going to use in the liquid light and penetrator/applicator? mixture. Just figure I should just start off using some sort of repellant rather than dealing with it when it happens. Not sure on the nutrients Im going to use, possibly fox farm or advanced nutrients, been reading a lot of good stuff about them.
My soil mixture is 5 parts Fox Farm Ocean Forest, 4 parts Fox Farm Original Planting Mix, and one part Perlite. Plants won't need nutrients for the first two or three weeks, they'll be on a minimal feeding schedule unless they get hungrier then I'll up the dosage.
Thats it for now, I plan on germinating the seeds within the next week and a half. Pictures soon!

Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
I got a 24" two bulb 48 watt T5 that fits in there perfectly, as of now I have ~190 watts of cfls running. I've been doing a lot of drilling because the exhaust fan is straining still, probably have about 15 holes in the damn box now, temps in dead center are still in low 80s. Right now I need bigger vents or a passive intake. The room temperature that the box is in fluctuates between 74 and 79. Might put a couple more holes in tomorrow and then eventually cover them up with some strong tape when I get the passive intake.
I know plants are able to grow in the low 80s but they thrive in the 72-78 range if not colder. I've grown marijuana in higher temps before and they looked like solid plants until a lack in maintenance occurred.
I started germinating three of my seeds, 1 Vanilluna, 2 Querkle. Moist paper towel in a ziploc bag, rested them on the cable box for warmth and covered it with a pamphlet of some sort. Seeds should pop in the next 24-72 hours.
Now I'm going to enjoy a joint of sour diesel and mix the soil. night yall

Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
Thanks killa and Shov, I too am excited to see the near future! I've been drilling holes like crazy, temps were 83-83 w all the lights on now I got it to 80-81. Temp gets to around 73 at night with the exhaust on medium opposed to high.
I'm still going to start the veg cycle in there even though the temps are high, hopefully I'll have some money for a small blower as a passive intake soon.
That should do the trick!
Stay tuned every one I'll give the germination report later tonight.

Just to clarify for you...
A "passive" intake refers to a hole that sucks air into the box via negative pressure caused by the exhaust. If you were to add a blower for your intake, that would turn it into an "active" intake.
Just so you dont get confused when you do your research...
Also, try making the hole larger than 1". I personally have a 4" Vortex fan exhausting my box, and my intake is a 4" hole ducted. I still have way too much negative pressure even with a 4" hole and could probably use an additional 4" intake.

MediJuana....
To answer your question....Yes all my log plants are grown in CFL's but i do use HPS with the other grows im involved with.....The pics of the Black Haze in my CH9 log are under 4- 1000w HPS. But my White skunk and CH9 mixed females were all grown with CFL's and Fox Farm! Good luck bro.....if i can answer anything else for u....just ask!

Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
Damn thanks killa those are all bad ass plants, may need tips through out the grow!
Bombd I know what you mean, and I totally meant to say that, my buddy corrected me on that today, and i have quite a bit of negative pressure in there I think a small blower or a small comp fan would help. Looks like the box got shot up lol, nothing duct tape cant fix.
This is the prototype model lol, when more money acquired I'll make a bad ass box, two boxes, one veg one flower.
Temps were peaking in the 79 - 80 range today, not too bad but it needs to be lower.
Both Querkle seeds popped and are in the FF soil mix, Vanilluna is take its time but it will show in the next 48 hours hopefully.
Also I need to get some blocks of styrofoam to raise the plants closer to the light, should minimize stretching. Shitty thing happened also, the attachment I used on the T5 snapped and one of the bulbs broke so there's a 3000k light in there for the mean time.
Every thing's coming along for now hopefully Friday we'll see some seedlings.

Bottom of box reads 77 degrees F. 54% humidity.
-
Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
Alright now I'm pretty excited. Temps haven't exceed 78 degrees in the past day, I think that when I stuck a big plastic box in there to get the pots a little higher it really had an effect. Just read 76.4 a min ago! Woo!
Also good news - 100% germination rate of the 3 seeds, I officially have 2 Querkle and one Vanilluna in pots. Only a matter of time before we see seedlings.
I'm going to try and use my brosephs camera tonight to get yall some pictures, stay tuned!

Alright I'm outta town until tomorrow my broseph checked up on em for me and both Querkle #1 & 2 have sprouted. No signs on Vanilluna yet but soon to come, hopefully it'll be a good surprise when i get back tomorrow!
Ahh I'm stoked but stuck in a damn drought zone, and now is definitely time for a celebratory spliff. I'm off on the hunt peace out yall pics monday, PROMISE!

Got back in town just now, surprise surprise Vanilluna's reachin to the moon.
All are nice looking seedlings, gonna save up for the organic bio-grow omni certified nutrients, dutch master penetrator and liquid light, humboldt's purple maxxx, and I might pick up a root stimulator too. My last grow the plants that I had didn't have a very good root system so if I have the cash Ill grab it.
Pics up tomorrow

Higher temps are because I moved the plants closer to the lights, sucks I know... going to build a whole new box with a big active intake.

I went to the hydro store today...spent about 250 bucks getting all my nutrients, but I'm so relieved that I finally have it all!
I didn't get the flowering nutrients yet because I don't need them, going to start applying liquid light + penetrator every other morning. Hope to ge the show on the road here soon!
I found a 239 cfm 6" fan today that I might get for the better box, that'd lower the temps quite a bit.

Some feedback would be nice...
The seedlings are looking good, really good. the Querks will be a week old on saturday and Vanilluna on Sunday.
Vanilluna is just now having the second set of leaves come out and they are already showing purple coloration! Whether this plant is a male or a female, I'm taking clones or collecting pollen for sure!
Pics updated weekly, new pics on sunday.

And for the Vanilluna -
all same plant, last pic is the underside of the leaves. When the second set of leaves came out they had purple coloration, this picture shows the purple color of the underside of the leaves. It could be genetic seeing in how Vanilluna is made up of multiple blueberry strains, etc.. Don't think its a deficiency because all of the plants are in the same medium and drinking the same water and this is the only plant w/ color!

Querkle, Vanilluna. 100 gal grow box, cfls
Plants are growing like crazy! Querkle #2 is almost on its 5th node. I believe i have 2 different phenotypes of Querkle and the phenotype I have of Vanilluna is looking real nice...deep purple thick sturdy stems, purple color on the underside of the leaves, growing slower but I'm sure itll hit a spurt when I get on my feeding schedule.
All is good!

I've decided that I'm gonna give the FIM technique a try on the vanilluna between the 4th and 5th nodes. And I'm going to LST the querkles, definite difference in the querkles, both nice structure, #1 looks more sativa dominant (space queen phenotype) and #2 has an indica structure with wider leaves. #2 is growing much faster than the rest, Vanilluna being the slowest.
Pics updated this weekend, considerable difference since the last time I took pics.

Medjuana,
Looking very nice there,
I am not sure about the plant with purple leaves I think you may want to post that in the plant problem forum just to be safe. Every strain is different in its needs, my gut feeling it is a nutrient problem.

Thanks jerry will do right away...I thought that too but then i read up on the blueberry strains that were used in this cross, they say that every mom has a nice purple stem as a seedling and so on. You'll be able to see in the sunday update but IMO it doesn't have the deficiency look to it if you know what i mean, more of a healthier purposeful look.
Anyway, def 2 way different querkle phenos...hope they're both female! beginning of week 3 is coming up and I'm going to start looking for any signs of hunger. Stay tuned!

Okay....I was watchin tv reading Cannabible 3 and got a fun idea. I start germinating one mids seed that I have which was basically poorly grown dro, and I also started germinating 1/5 seeds that I have of the strain Sour Diesel/ChemD x Super Silver Haze. This strain is supposed to be harder to grow and have a potent smell to it but I figure...may get 2 weeks veg? then flower until done in a smaller pot so it won't get too bad. Just some more personals, maybe take a clone off of or something while I can. Add a variety to the bunch, they will be small but they will be dank, just a small hit out of a clean bong should do, that is if its a female!
Anyways I'm back to night cappin'.
Oh and the plants are already starting to turn back straight, quite amazing how it all works, and I think the FIM caught but I can't be sure (being as its my first attempt). Hope and stay tuned.

Tomorrow morning is the first feeding, they look like they're turning a little yellow tint so feeding is in order. The other seeds haven't popped yet so I'm just waiting for that, and the Quirkles are turning towards the lights rapidly.
I'm thinking about lowering the plants but I don't know if its time yet, any opinions?

Sour D/ChemD x SSH is in the ground, seed popped this morning. the midling seed is still germing and waiting to pop.
Getting colder outside so the temps in my house are staying lower, even to the point where its 75 in the box after the lights have been on for several hours.
I fed them for the first time this morning with all the General Hydroponics BioBizz products except for the top max which will only be used in flower along with the purple maxx snow storm.
All is good! plants are turning more, still can't tell about the FIM. I did the cut a little crooked on accident but cut of 80% of the new leaf growth. Anyone know if this will effect whether it catches or not?
Thanks all subscribers

The plants love the food, they just seem to get bigger and bigger just like they should! LST is looking great, I'll probably make another bend in two days after the next watering... FIM caught too! 4 nice nubs are branching out of the top..anyone think I should FIM twice? or is that not recommended?
I also did some math in class today...I figured that 6 weeks veg, 8-9 weeks flower, dry for one to two weeks or until ready, then cure for a minimum of 4 weeks before I roll the first fatty. Then keep curing as long as its in a jar, and I will also have a jar set aside for a 4/20 cure; put a lot in there and make 4/20 a week long if I'm lucky but I highly doubt it. Expect the official smoke report around the beginning of April.
Most of this is going to be personals, I'll give some to a few friends of mine and my buddies relative is suffering from MS so the anti-inflammatory trait from the space queen that was used in the cross to make Quirkle hopefully comes out in one of my phenotypes.
Replies would be excellent, constructive criticism and opinions help out so speak up yall!

Dropped the plants about 3 inches today, temps getting lower too so its all good. A strong 3 weeks into veg and everything is looking great, the smells resemble everything I had imagined and are stronger than I thought they'd be at this stage. Looking to transplant in the next week then these babies will really take off!
I thought about trying to induce flower to find out which plants are female then putting them back into veg, get rid of the males, then put the females into bigger pots then I would if I transplant them all at the same time...not going to tho I don't feel like screwing anything up.
Pics on Sunday, plants are on 7th node except for Vanilluna, shes doin her thing with the FIM.
