When to STOP watering, and wait for Harvest?
Guys, my first post, not big on this, and asking for a friend :) Have been reading, and just can't find a clear answer for him, have read "Buds for Less" as the bible, not sure how many times I have read it, looking through forums, and just can't find a clear answer on this.
Unknown Seed, been doing great though following the book. He didn't read up on flushing early enough, so basically same PH downing the tap water since beginning to get the PH water at the right level, and still going. The guy has been trying to follow the "Buds for Less" as close as possible understanding every strain is different.
But now at the end of the road, and not sure what to do next. He believes he is at day 69 (Bud's last day and harvest time) but the pictures are as close to day 59 as any other pictures. Not really any amber hairs yet, everything is starting to brown though, and thinking he needs to keep watering.. On day 59 the book only says "This may be the last day of watering" so that all the chloro can start leaving the plant, and get it ready to harvest.
So the question is "When do you know what day to stop watering the plant?" If he stops watering today, surely the plant will start turning amber pistils, and leaves will wilt and fall etc. But if he waters will the plant keep budding bigger?
A lot of this will depend on the situation, no pics etc. But can anyone comment on when the last day he should stop watering? seems most guides are tired of detailed writing at this point, and there is not a clear answer.

I have not read that book only this web site and the way I have learned is to water up until harvest. That way you ensure you have gotten to the plants full potential. I have read where some start cutting out adding nutes around that time, but not water.

Those don't look anywhere near ready in my opinion.
What lighting are you using? Your growth looks very stretched out and spindly.
How close to the canopy are you keeping the light?

He is using CFL Lighting 42W (150W Equiv).
He has like 5 of those on the outsides of a board (2 on each side, and 1 smaller CFL in the middle)that he keeps ~3 inches above the plants.
I was amazed at how much they kept stretching regardless of the closeness of the lights as well, but he said he only moves them up when they are about to touch the light.
The hight is about 36" or 3 feet high from top of pot to top of plant. (Which he had to bend over and tie down because it was taking the lights too far from the other buds.
I think his pot was too small (MiracleGrow Soil/Perlite 80/20 mix), and now it's more roots than dirt, but he doesn't want to make any changes this late in the game.
I think it's so spindly looking as 1. because of the strain, and 2. pot size has kept growth down, and the leaves that he had he pulled when they dropped and yellowed. making it look more like twigs now.
He watered yesterday, and says it is looking better today (2 day watering cycle, keeping consistant). He will continue to water until at least 40/60 amber/white hairs, then try letting it use all it's water up in time to die. (Bud's guide seems to suggest it helps getting rid of chloro if you ween it off the water a week before your going to harvest. Also suppose to help dry better/faster. Again, he pretty much followed the "Buds for less" as the bible, and did just about everything that guy did. I honestly think the bag seed which wasn't the best, also doesn't grow the best. One of the reasons I was asking if anyone had any idea what it was. I can show some younger pictures he took if needed, but hopefully not needed.
For his first and only grow, I think he did pretty good, not having any practice even growning a vegetable. :) But any advice for next steps to keep what is there moving forward till it's ready to harvest? He has ~70 days into this, and doesn't want to loose anythying at this point.

I'm with Jerry on this one... I'd stop giving nutrients a couple weeks before harvest, giving only plain water. Washing all the nitrogen out of the soil (depriving the plant of N) is what will cause the plant to consume all its clorophyll, which is a good thing. :)

Hey, thanks for the reply. He hasn't ever given it any Nutrients, that was the original comments about flushing, etc.. It's only been water out of the tap at the correct PH level, and nothing else from seed crack to now..

IMO, they look over watered and rootbound. Are they 69 days from seed or flowering. That's all i can think of.

I, regrettably so, own a copy of the book in question. I tried a CFL grow based on the same principles in the book and got shit for yield. I do not believe that those nugs were grown under those spiral CFL's. If anyone on here can prove me wrong on this please do. I challenge anyone with a copy of the book to check page 68, day 67, and give it some close scrutiny. The image has clearly been photoshop'd to change pistil colors and details. I think anyone that is going to alter an image in their book, wouldn't mind altering some other shit to make a buck. Remember that if you have to pay a price for the information and it seems to good to be true, odds are it's smoke and mirrors.
Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

Thanks, I can believe root bound, overwatered though? It's pretty freakin dry by the second day (48 hours later), and pot is lighter (as some were saying is a good test).
At this stage of the game should my buddy go buy a bigger pot (from 2G to 3Gallon), and add some more soil in the space created? Or would that shock the plant since it seems to be on the final days anyway? Any advice I can share on next steps would be great. They seem pretty up close, stinky, and sticky, would hate to loose them because of a simple problem. :)
IRYDYUM: Yeah the book is good, unfortunately not very clear on a lot of details that would be helpful for first timers, instead of some of the stuff he talks about, more details on what exactly he is doing would be good. It was a recommended read, and will never be worse off, but could be a lot better. I will say my buddy has done pretty well with the CFL's, with possible exception to the stretch (which I think is partially it's species as well) it has done pretty good in the light, and think it is adequate, I don't have faith this bag seed would have produced too much more volume with a better/more expensive setup that would have been out of reach for my buddy anyway. So he was just seeing if he could get something, and it definitely appears he has something for a first timer.

If I were you or your buddy I would throw that book away and start reading as much as you can in here! the information in here is much better because you have growers doing what they find works best and sharing that information, no better resource than that:thumbsup:
Since you are near the end of this grow, you need to think about the next and get prepared. You can start by getting some quality seeds for around $60.00. And some good quality nutes, for another $100.00 you can get the entire line of Fox Farm nutes.
I feel you and your buddy have got the grow bug so get a little cash together and you will be on the path to growing some really killer buds.
As for transplanting you can do it and it will not harm the plants, if anything they will thank you with bigger buds.

Here are 2 of my favorite sites I use for seeds and grow materials.
For seeds go to ( Hempdepot.com )
For growing materials go to ( htgsupply.com )

Thanks, will tell him to get a bigger pot, and add some soil to it, and watch the watering..Real yellow leaves are too much water? They are limp and yellow, while others are dried up and crisping off..
He tried ordering from Nirvana and spent like $50 on WW seeds, but all that he got in the mail was a hemp wallet with a big HEMP picture on it, and nothing but an empty plastic leaf bag inside. Not very discreat at all, and they wouldn't respond to his email to try again. He thought it only fair to at least try again, but no go.. Not sure if he will try this anymore, but will pass this link on, are they better getting to US than the AMS locations?

Generally going from Canada to the US is much more reliable than trying to come all the way from AMS. I know a number of people have had great success with hempdepot. That is probably where I will be ordering my seeds next time around.

Quickly looking the prices look insanely high on there though. White Widow $130 + for 10 seeds of WW? Am I missing something?

OMG that is the best WEED I have seen in a long time.
That show is a trip! (Literally).

Look into Joey Weed seeds on the sight, Also there are many other breeders with strains for between $50.00 and $100.00.
Joey Weed is highly recommended on this sight but are sold out of the WW and a few others allot! So I got the Blue Widow and Blue Apollo and I am very happy so far. Mixing 2 of the stronger strains White Widow and Apollo 11 with my favorite smoke Blueberry! HMMM sounds tasty don't it. I'll tell you in about a month with the real outcome.:rastasmoke:

Ok, here are some new pics in the last few days.
Looks like it is going down hill now. Any feedback on this? Still think too much water? The pot is light as a feather, and I am sure there isn't enough dirt. Going to get him to get a bigger pot today.

That looks like nute lock or high soil ph. You need to do a flush. If you have good drainage pour a gallon of water into the pot and let all the excess run out the bottom this flushes all the salts and any other bad things out and corrects the ph. I know this is not a good time to add nitrogen but they are extremly deprived of nutriants because your buddy never used any and it has used up all that was in the soil. So get some mild nutes, this should get them to bounce back in a few days. If you have a store around that sells Fox Farm nutes get some Big Bloom and add that to the water. If you get that I can almost garentee they will bounce back because I have done it with roses before that everyone thought were dead, 2 weeks later they were lush with leaves and producing new flowers.
