For those of you who think that all of the opposition to Sarah Palin is from "leftwing" nuts; the following is a list of books that she tried to
get banned when she was mayor of Wasilla. I am not sure that Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou and Geoffrey Chaucer would be considered dangerous to children. Judy Blume give me a break. Harry Potter, who is kidding who. I also fail to see how Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary by the Merriam-Webster Editorial Staff should be banned.

This information is taken from the official minutes of the Wasilla Library Board. When the librarian refused Palin tried to get her fired as she did with the Safety Director of the State who refused to fire a trooper who was getting a vicious divorce from her sister

She also told her Assembly of God Church in June 2008 that it is "God's Will" that the federal government contribute to the expansion of the Alaska pipeline. (Must have been talking to George Bush). She sounds like one of those lawyers Bush put into the justice department.

and quite a few others that one could reasonably argue shouldn't be in a library.

And why ban scary stories 1 and 3 but not 2? Perhaps her math skills are a litttle lacking.

Maybe you missed it?
This is a false rumor. Right at the top of the page on the link, it says, status, "False", then goes into detail further down.
Hence several of the books on the list, were not even published at the time in question, 1996, i.e. the Harry Potter Books.:)

It's just a fine example of how the left in America is reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaching for anything to discredit Palin, or paint her as the next anti-christ.
Things like this should be a clear indicator as to how threatening this woman is to the left. They are trying to do the same old drive by character assassination that they tried to do to Clarence Thomas. The issue is that in both cases, you have a minority of society that completely flies in the face of everything that the liberal left has been telling everyone to believe for years. So there only option is to try to demonize and discredit these people so that they can maintain there dogma. No doubt that even though most people will see through this, lots of people will not realize this, and will believe what they are told to believe, (I am thinking that these are the same folks you see fainting at the sight of Obama, and holding their "change" signs upside down while jumping up and down in the air like school girls.
I think it is great that you did post this, and the facts behind it were brought to light! In a weird way you actually did a service to Palin.

MAny of those books are required reading... or used to be when I was in school. A lot of them still are. besides... to even think about banning books would be condeming freedom of speach. That ain't gonna happen.

the very fact that she would have any books banned is a rather sad commentary on the state of american conservatism and politics in general. that conservatives must swing so far toward totalitarianism to reach their base is just another example of the extremism that so pervades our government and culture. just as the left would have us enslaved to the intrusive clutches of big government socialism, the right wishes to lock up our minds by restricting our access to radical thought and alternate philosophies. there seems to be no place left for moderation and the gentle progression that is natural to a healthy society. everyone is either trying to force drastic immediate change or attempting to stall the evolution of our culture completely.

Really though i attempted to edit the post but do not know how. I think Kush is right that some people will read the first post and then just ASSUME ITS TRUE. I think any smears on either side is a disservice to our country, and should be corrected. Tell me how and i will make the correction on the original post.

Lastly i think its a bit silly to say that only the left is creating smears against the right. This is an obvious two way street.
Sarah Palin has a future in politics. She could very well fight her way to the top, while having conversations about potentially banning books from our libraries. Its just not gonna happen this November...

There's been a list making the rounds lately, showing books that Sarah Palin allegedly tried to ban from Wasilla's public library during her mayoral tenure. The list isn't true, and in some instances, doesn't even make sense (some the books hadn't even been published in 1996, when the incident is alleged to have occurred).

The McCain campaign is apparently aware of the rumor, and is pushing back.


The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

"This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period," McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."




While the purported list is bogus, we do know that something happened with regards to Palin and at least a question about book banning.

Time reported last week, for example, that Palin asked the Wasilla librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, about the process for banning books. Baker was reportedly "aghast" at the question. Soon after taking office, Palin, according to a New York Times report, fired Baker, and news reports from the time indicate that Palin thought Baker hadn't done enough to give her "full support" to the mayor.

Palin reversed course on Baker's dismissal after a local outcry, and later said the discussions about banning books were "rhetorical."

I can understand why the McCain campaign is pushing back against a bogus list that's making the rounds. Deceptive claims are deceptive claims, no matter who the target is. But as long as McCain aides are talking about this issue, maybe they can answer a couple of additional questions, such as, "Why did Palin try to fire the librarian in the first place?" Or how about, "Why did Palin broach the subject of book-banning if she had no intention of trying to ban books?"

While I agree this is a bogus rumor, I found P4B's comments to be the most interesting. I'm curious as to whether or not she would have had any intentions of banning certain books (Harry Potter and the like imo, because of her religious beliefs), because that's a bit disturbing to me. Also, the fact that she fired the librarian for not giving her "full support" is much more disturbing to me. It's also curious that Palin's brother was in a brutal divorce with said librarian (or someone near that, can't remember exactly). It kinda makes me wonder if she is quick to anger/judgement. Also, I was watching the news late last night (unfortunately, the 24 hour news is the ONLY thing on at 4 AM) and the Republican campaign spokesman said he was concerned and dissapointed that the media wasn't more defferential to Palin. That was troubling quite a bit. I'm not defferential to anyone except the po-lice, because they'll kick your ass if your not. The media isn't going to stay out of politicians lives in a presidential election.

I'm glad to hear the list is bogus.

But I am still disturbed by the idea that a mayor would fire a librarian for not "being supportive" of her. I think the post of librarian ought to be considered non-political, difinitely non-partisan.

It's only a rumor that the librarian was fired for not being open to the idea of banning certain books from the library, but I believe it. There is a record of Palin asking the librarian about the procedure for banning books from the library and the librarian resisting even talking about banning any books from its collection. My feeling is that's what Palin felt was not "being supportive" --- refusing to consider banning books. What else could it be? Any alternative theories for why Palin might have fired the librarian for not "being supportive" of Palin? What is the librarian supposed to do to "be supportive"? Work on Palin's re-electin campaign? How supportive or non-supportive can a librarian even be esxpected to be? The idea is ridiculous.

I think the reason conservatives are so disdainful of culture is that they produce so little of it themselves. Conservatives have no cultural offereings to "compete" (if that is even the right word) with any of the cultural offerings of the rest of the spectrum from modrate to liberal. That's why they seek to ban books, plays, movies, songs, etc. They have nothing to offer to the culture in their so-called "culture war," so they seek to fight that war politically by banning the opposition's contribution to culture. It'll never work. You can't fight culture with politics. Social conservatives should try offering someting to the culture from their own point of view rather that try to fight this "culture war" politically.

You're absolutely right about this! Maybe the story should not be banned outright, but it needs to be moved to the adult section and off limits to kids! This story is all about sex! The so called "little red riding hood" is a obvious metaphor for the clitoral hood! The "big bad wolf" is just a horny guy who wants to ride that little red hood --- ride it al the way to China! He stalks her alll the way through the woods and is waiting to rape her at grandama's house! And the twisted part is that she is kind of into it --- my, what a big d**k you have!

Might as well ban the Bible, since it's filled with stories of sex, incest, prostitution, masturbation, whores, rape, adultery and murder, forbidden intimacies with animals, homosexuality, orgies, King David the flasher, abortion, phallic worship, sex drugs, venerial disease, indecent exposure, drunkenness, a fertility contest, self-castration, and other colorful topics.

Yes, Figment, you missed the sarcasm that Midnight picked up on. I was just joking about banning poor Little Red Riding Hood or moving it to the adult section. I am not for banning any books at all. I do not condone any form of censorship. I think that if a person or group disgrees with the ideas of a book or other form of art, they should make thier own argument and let people decide for themselves, but don't try to ban the idea.

However, even though I was joking about banning Little Red Riding Hood, I wasn't completely joking about the metaphor of the story. I was stretching it a bit with the clitoral hood imagery (that was a joke), but I do think the story is a cautionary tale about little girls being wary of men who are out to get them. The underlying message is about sex, but it is so buried that the story is appropriate for kids. In fact, it's valuable becasue kids get the idea of being wary of strangers without having to expalin that someone might want to rape them --- leave it at the idea the "wolf" might want to "eat" them, without getting into the real life nightmares that kids might really face at the hands of a stranger.
