What's your Career?

I'm currently a Personal Trainer, but I'm finding it a bit hard to tolerate lately... not as fulfilling as I thought it'd be... I have a background in Communications, and I am starting to be afraid that all I'll have ahead of me is a job in sales, which is too unstable for me, considering my other career is Acting, and that's already unstable enough.

So I was hoping my CannCom family could help me out with a little inspiration.

What is it that you do for a living? What's your career? Do you like it? What keeps you there? Where is it taking you?

just as a suggestion... if u r good at any certain range of products and consider yourself knowledgeable, connected and in the know for that product/industry

u may well have a good shot @ online business which i know for fact can be a good steady money maker depending on what u do/sell

i know ebay and amazon marketplaces work quite well if u know what and how to sell it...i myself experimented with non-commercial [test/error] methods for books and not that i recollected all my costs/investments for purchases and shipping, i made some 50% worth of initial investment on it as well, but a researched and commercial plan will respond quite well for sure

but dont get fooled by stupid shit, gazillions of them scam sites are floating out there

just an idea. if interested u should start your research and if u find some deal that sounds too good to be true, then it is!

My advice would be: Choose one you do well and like then focus on it!

I just started college so I'm a full time student.

I'm going for Dental Assisting.

I'm a chef.

My ambition in life is to open my own traditional new england style diner. It's been a dream for a long long time. Diner culture fascinates me.

anything related to "dental care" or "financial sector" has real good potential these days and very good forecast at least for the next 5-10 years... in demand and high pay jobs!

Haha yeah it seems like a pretty easy job.

My fiance went to the same college as I am and he went for Accounting and Business Law. He's the one that brought up Dental Assisting haha.

My goal is to become an actuary or a financial analyst. Haven't completely decided, still going to school to major in finance while working full-time in AP.

Im going to college,to take Media Broadcasting!:)Im gonna be a radio host, then work my way to get into the TV business, then once I've made it there, I could live my dream in the music industry!;)

I am a HVAC company owner... I started out sweeping floors in a machine shop many years ago, worked hard, did double duty at school...was going to the local JC while I was still in High school as well as working. I earned my journeymans papers at the tender age of 19, then as long as I had a means of keeping a roof over my head and food on the table, I enlisted in the Coast Guard as a mechanical engineer. Uncle Sam was kind...when I retired from the military after 22 years, Uncle had paid for me a masters degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in environmental science. just one of the things I was trained in in the military was heating, ventilation, and air conditioning along with a whole lot of other things. When I retired, I couldn't find anybody that wanted to pay what I was worth, so I started my own company. It took a couple years to get it running where I was happy with it... been living the dream ever since. Been in business for 12 years now.

I'm currently a full time student at Boston Uni. working on my doctorate in physical therapy with a dual degree in athletic training. I hope to do some traveling and philanthropical work while I'm young and hopefully learn another language like Spanish at the same time. As I become more experienced I hope to open a private practice and specialize in something (haven't decided on that one yet maybe orthopedics). If I can gain financial stability and a very comfortable life I'd ultimately like to find my way to politics maybe at the local level.. mayor or something? My only advice is dream big I sure as hell am and so far everything I've hoped to accomplish has come my way. And when it all becomes overwhelming just chill out and burn one, I still manage to smoke every day.

i work in a health food store for animals. I guess you could say its a little strange, but people really dont realize what they feed their pets and how dangerous it is. We dont only sell food, we sell supplements, and natural preventatives and cures for many ailments. Many of the supplements in the store can be used on people to to help with the same problems because they are natural. Take neem for example, we sell the oil in the store, and it is a natural insect repellent, along with a fungicide, and bacteriocide. Which can be very useful for growing seeing as it prevents bugs, fungus and bacterias.

Feeding the right type of foods to your animals increases their health, meaning you spend less time at the vets, which actually make money off your pet being sick, imagine that. And they dont have to take the hypocratic oath.

Current college student at Le cordon Bleu institute in Minneapolis. But my part time position is a "page" At a local library.

EDIT: Jimmy, want to recommend a nutritional treat for my little shitzhu

^ dude, a great treat, for a shih-tzu, or any dog really would be bully sticks. They are great for dogs, they are a protein based treat meaning they are getting a very vital nutrient. They are hard and fiberous which is good for cleaning teeth. There is virtually no mess, only the chewed on end stays wet, and the little bits that break off are usually eaten as soon as they are dropped, and if you get the ones that are drained right there is no smell. They are digestable, they are so much better than rawhide that my store doesnt even sell rawhide, never give a dog rawhide, which presents choking hazards, and doesnt digest and can sit around in their bowels for long times, if they even pass through. Plus they can take several hours to days to finish one so it is a great treat for dogs who need something to chew on.

the only thing is you wanna get one that is holistic, or natural, organic, freerange, something, check any that say they are smoked, because a lot of commercial brands smoke products with BHA or BHT as a preservative, but both of these are known to be highly carcinogenic. A good brand to start with would be Red Barn, and they are lightly smoked, but with natural woods and the such.

I wanted to be a nurse but came to the assumption they must get random drug testing. Starting school in january and I guess I will go for Accounting degree.

I've done many things but there have been a couple of things that have always been a mainstay..
Engineer (structural steel)
Spraypainter

My two favourites were.
Security on porn shoots
and
Coffeeshop owner in Holland.

I've never done a job I hated and I wouldn't want to.

I'm a pro lab rat and have been for years. I sorta fell into this career, since my degree is in conservation, and is good for like, no money, lol... I got hired on by a lab that was falling behind in their data reporting on a project for which I was the field coordinator... and now I'm STUCK!!! Save me. lol
My dream, though, is to open a retreat/resort where people can come for weekends and learn sustainable agriculture techniques, eat great food, and enjoy the simple life- stupid rich girls with big noses not included.

on a more serious note:

I'm a Senior Network Engineer/Network Architect. I've been in this field for the last 6 years. I dropped out of college after about 60-70 hours when I determined Exxon was paying me plenty of money and I had no use for school. I've steadily gone up in pay since although the road has been rocky with the dot com market crash in the late 90's/early 2000 and a few other ecnomic dips.

Overall I love my job but I don't enjoy working for large corporations. I prefer to work in Data Center environments where the company actually makes money by selling bandwidth or data. When you work for a company that doesn't make money off it's IT services they really tend to treat you like crap. I don't mean that they treat you like crap personally, but rather they don't fully realize the importance of your department.

Ideally I'd like to be a professional poker player, but my winnings last years are roughly 1/3 of what I make a year :( Not quite enough. If I can break 6 figures then I'll definitely quit my job and play poker full time.

Something I learned from self improvement speakers. Make a list on paper of everything you can think of that you would do if money were no object. If you had as much money as you want, what would you do. Puff one and do this list, it really frees the mind of all the " I can't do that" type of thinking. There are jobs/businesses in any profession you want. If you do what you love, you will make money at it even if you start out working for free. Education is everywhere, not just in college.:thumbsup:

Part of it's probably burn-out. Been doing the same thing (with the same company) for about 8 years. It's easy, and it pays well, but much of the time it's just mind-numbingly boring. Luckily I haven't have to deal with annoying customers as much (I was internal IT, so my customers were software developers and testers), but mostly I'm just ready for something different ...

What's the exact opposite of IT? Forest Ranger? Yeah, that sounds good. Maybe I'll do that ...

i know how it is possible to hate that kind of work, first is that if you have to cover a large enough area you have to travel almost daily pretty far. Then when you get to the site, you are probably the only one who understands anything you say because the majority of computer problems stem from inept people not maintaining thier equipment properly, then when you try to help them over the phone they are typically dumbasses who cant understand anything related to computers, or dont have the access to actually do anything so a trip would be required. Then being that most companies have only a few people for IT it is also your responsibility to run all the wires through walls and ceilings, and anytime construction is done, you have to be there to move all the equipment and keep it organized for the face of the company so customers dont notice wires everywhere. stupid stuff. my pops does it, and its tough work, long hours, and he could get a call on his phone 24/7 with someone needing computer work done.

To tell ya the truth flyingimam,for the first few years I was terrified...Most of the time your workin' on swing stage,which is a platform with two motors suspended by cables...It can get real windy,you get stuck in storms,and sometimes it's just so darn cold...

Like I said 10 more years and I'm out of this forever,(I'll still point the relatives houses,lol)...I've never finished anything in my life,(except plants,lol)

BUT here is the difference:

CPA accountants are in nearly 400% shortage for the market and highly in demand!

u will start off at about 60-80k for 1st year without any experience
and within about 5 years u should have gone up into near 6 figure income!
if u do exceptionally well, u may be able to find partners adn start off your own firm very soon

however, due to amount of possible money CPAs can make, they have a great chance @ kickin off their own business (whatever the field, even a mcdonalds!) quite fast with few years of working and saving + good credit and a loan!

and since they know (lets hope they do) the technicalities of economic markets and principles of business... they will be far better business owners than your average owners... plus u save shit load of money doing your own taxes and accounts, every business pays out thousands of dollars for accounting and for auditing on yearly basis!

OR u can stay on the job if u dont have a problem getting tested or if u r willing to quit and make it all the way to an auditor... they make like 300 bucks per hour just taking inventory or just leading the auditing team, supervising other personnel doing the same

regardless i would say:thumbsup: just gotta find a way around smoking and not gettin caught on tests... with that kinda money, u can afford the most expensive anti-test stuff!:D

u talk about 10 years like its 1 year! i like your time-mentality, passage of time sober for me is painful! i have to stay in school for like 2 more years for a Bachelors degree and everytime i think about it, i feel its gonna feel like 10-15 years to me!

its funny u say this about drug testing and high altitude jobs, somewhere in a newspaper a few years ago I remember reading that some indian tribe's people are kinda the only people who are naturally prone to high altitude and work on massive high rises in major cities to the north! now that i know they can legally smoke piote, oh well, i understand why they are the only ones doing that type of job!

i donno, maybe its just me, i like the types of job where u work rather alone or with as few people as possible since i find team works overwhelming and full of shit all the time... u can just get blowed and despite the harsh conditions, zone-out while doin a repetitive job n makin a buck. but i must admit i have never been on those platforms u guys work on to do your job, so i cant tell how i will feel on them... but as long as i have some safety, i like being in high altitudes especially when high! lol

my career is as a professional roughneck. making 60k a year baby. sure i don't smoke but i drink the hell outta my friends jack and jim. ain't life great? dying of liver cancer at a young age but i had fun.

Hey, at least its not illegal. remember alcohol kills but its legal. marijuana soothes but its criminalized like a rapist.
