Colin Powell to endorse Obama
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Weekly Standard Publisher Bill Kristol told FOX News exclusively on Thursday.
??He may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,? Kristol said, citing inside sources.
An endorsement by Powell could go a long way to attracting moderates and wayward Republicans to the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate.
Over the years, Powell himself has been touted as a potential presidential or vice presidential candidate. The former national security adviser served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. He was secretary of state for the younger President Bush.
His tenure is most notable for presenting to the U.N. Security Council evidence that Iraq was pursuing weapons of mass destruction. His presentation led to a resolution endorsing military action against that country, but he later described it as a ??blot? on his record.
Powell has unofficially advised Obama and Republican candidate John McCain but had not endorsed anyone. A spokesman said in July that he was undecided.
In April, Powell praised Obama??s response to controversial remarks by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who had said the United States brought the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on itself by supporting terrorism and that the government created the AIDS virus to ??destroy people of color.?
??I thought that Senator Obama handled the issue well,? said Powell, the nation??s first black secretary of state. ??He didn??t abandon the minister that brought him closer to his faith, but at the same time he deplored the kinds of statements that the Reverend Wright had made.?
Obama later turned his back on Wright after the minister courted controversy again with additional comments in public.
Kristol: Colin Powell to Endorse Barack Obama - America’s Election HQ
I always liked Powell, even if he does lean left in some situations.
Oh well, you win some you lose some.
Colin Powell to endorse Obama
He would make a great VP. I really hope he's the candidate. He lost a lot of credibility while working for Bush but he's making a comeback. I think I would rather have Powell as the presidential nominee.

I'm not sure that Fox had its story straight, and this is one of the reasons--one of the many--that folks need to view stuff Fox posts very skeptically till it's confirmed by at least a couple of other legit news organizations. There's a story on ABCNews.com that says the opposite, at least about Powell attending the Democratic convention. I'd be very surprised if he went public with any endorsement of Obama, too. He might support him privately and even vote for him, but probably not publicly.

Powell Says He's Not Going to Dem Convention
August 13, 2008 5:53 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and David Chalian Report: Gen. Colin Powell told ABC News on Wednesday that he will not be going to the Democratic National Convention, disputing a suggestion made earlier in the day on the Fox News Channel by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol.
"I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol's musings,? Powell told ABC News. ??I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear."
After telling ABC News by phone that he would not be going to the Democratic National Convention, Powell ended the conversation without entertaining any follow-up questions as to whether he would be crossing party lines to endorse Obama.
Citing unnamed people who have "talked directly to the Obama campaign," Kristol told the Fox News Channel on Wednesday that "Colin Powell will endorse Senator Obama and he may well give a speech to the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama."
When asked about Kristol's suggestion that Powell might attend the Democratic National Convention, former Reagan White House Chief of Staff and Powell confidante Ken Duberstein took a swipe at Kristol.
"Consider the source," said Duberstein, referring to Kristol who once served as a top aide to Vice President Dan Quayle. "He was the person who advertised himself as Dan Quayle's brain. Colin Powell has no plans to attend either convention."

hahahaha.
Colin Powell to endorse Obama
The story it says that it is a hunch. And FOX news is by far much better than any of the other primary news organizations. People think FOX is biased, CNN and ABC are absolutely in love with Obama.
Colin Powell to endorse Obama
The entire mainstream media are in love with Obama. Not just those two. I'm not saying this is necessarily right. I think they've gone overly easy on him myself. There's been a lot of fawning over him all over the place.
That's irrelevant for this discussion, however. Here's something from Journalism 101. Take it yourself from any professor in any university in the country and you'll learn this, too. This is a good way to judge news credibility and why you'd be wise to be skeptical when you see this sorta thing coming out of any news organization. Fox and tabloids do it more than anyone else. Any journalism professor in the country will tell you to be very skeptical of any news agencies who do this.
The Fox story, according to Kristol, cites "inside sources." Those are inside, anonymous sources. Un-named ones.
The ABCNews story quotes Colin Powell himself directly. He spoke to two reporters, not just one.
Who're you going to believe? An unnamed anonymous source?
(Hint: No. Always be very skeptical about believing sources that aren't named or refuse to go on the record. Legitimate sources will be quotable and nameable except in very rare instances, like Watergate's Deep Throat.)
Or a direct quote from the precise person the story is about?
(Hint #2: The person you always believe first is a named, credible source who gives a direct, on-the-record quote. If he's the person the news story itself is about, this is a particularly effective way to know the source is solid and credible.)

I guess that the "tabloid" story on Edwards should still be on the back pages then. LOL....seems funny that ya didn't mention MSNBC; the Saviors station of choice.
Have a good one!:s4:

I don't ever watch MSNBC. I sometimes see regular NBC--or I used to watch Tim Russert faithfully. So I don't know what their news treatment is, but I know they're all fascinated with Obama. MSNBC is way up high on our satellite channels and no one ever flips that far into the 200s here.
You're the only one who ever calls Obama the "Savior." No one else here does. I'm guessing you must see him as that yourself!! LOL!
As far as the tabloids coming to the front pages, as soon as regular news agencies like AP and the mainstream networks could get people to go on the record with the Edwards story, that's when it came out in the regular news. There was lots of talk behind the scenes at news stations and papers across the country. The Edwards/mistress story had been scuttlebutt for a long time. And there was lots of griping about why it hadn't been covered outside the tabloids and the blogs. But till the networks and agencies could get confirmed sources on the record, they wouldn't officially come out with the story. No one's pulling your leg here or in the other thread where I was telling Reb about that. This is standard mainstream news operating procedure.
As a result, the mainstream news agencies got scooped, which happens sometimes. The tabloids broke the Gennifer Flowers story. I think that was The Star. The Star also caught Dick Morris with his call girl and first published that story. It was the National Enquirer that broke the story of Rush Limbaugh and his drug dealer. They're the ones who got pics of Gary Hart and Donna Rice. So they go after and get news, too, just like Fox does. But they also publish absolute sensational nonsense all the time, just like Fox does. Legitimate news agencies will sacrifice scoops sometimes in order to confirm sources and make sure they're telling the truth so they won't be sued for libel. Those others pay a lot for news stories, and they pay a lot of libel damages and settlements, too. It's safer and less expensive to confirm sources.
On the Colin Powell endorsement, someone in the Texas Democratic Party told me last night the party believes he is going to endorse Obama. I'm amazed, frankly, especially with his military background. I want to know if it's for reasons of racial solidarity or if there's bad blood between him and McCain. They said he won't attend the convention but that they're expecting him to make it public that he'll vote for Obama after the convention's over. If anyone knows of any background between him and McCain, I'd love to know that history!

I've blasted McCain on a few different issues.....how many issues have you blasted Obama on? Nice try on the spin though.... We both know to what lengths you'll go to protect the chosen one.

Now as for myself, I'm not linked to ANY political party as accused by a misguided individual in here; but this does explain alot.
As for Powell, IF he does endorse Obama it's not because of Obama's vast knowledge on foriegn affairs, his record of service, or his voting record so what could the reason be? His endorsement would do nothing more than to lower the respect level that people have for Powell.

His ideas, intellect, and character maybe? Shouldn't all candidates be judged based on that?
I've seen a lot of nonsense on the internet directed toward both candidates. Still, the sheer volume of ungrounded hatred directed at Obama is second to none.

many mindful folk refer to hatred as the ..umm... "child" ...of fear. So maybe there are many scared of the change Obama ?might? bring. Be that good , or bad.

to me this is a good sign:

They should be and that's why I can't back Obama.
Ideas:
-I don't like his plan for universal health care
-He has proven that he has no concept of military strategy
---But yet this is the man that wants to put us into Darfur
-He's not really for drilling for oil here in the states
-Raising taxes such as capital gains isn't going to help the economy
Intellect:
-Smart man, no problem there
-Multitude of "present" votes in state legislature instead of a commitment vote
-144 days of Senate and a pretty speech doesn't equate to being qualified for being the President
Character:
-Rev. Wright
-The Trinity Church
-Tony Rezko
-William Ayers
-Brother living on a dollar a day
-When in a bind, play the race card
-The same platform that he used to beat Clinton now seems to be a thing of the past....decietful
I agree that these are things that ALL voters should look at.

You know Mrs. Clinton is eating this up. With the support she still gets today despite Obama being the Presidential candidate is amazing. I'm sure it would be in her best interest if good ole' Barry ate the dirt on this one. It would just about seal the deal on her getting nominated as the democratic presidential candidate in 2012.

- Technically, his plan isn't for universal health care. He's taken a lot of flak from Democrats for this. And something tells me you're not a fan of universal health care.
- He's running for President, not general, and besides, he has the best understanding of the political climates in other countries of any of the candidates. And I don't understand why you think he has no concept of military strategy anyway.
- The problem in Darfur is lawlessness, so it's pretty hard to make things worse like we did in Iraq. And besides, the UN is already involved there.
- Opening up more areas to drilling isn't as simple as it seems. For one, there are plenty of good drilling sites in the US already that aren't being used, even though there's nothing stopping the oil companies. Plus, oil won't last forever. We need to gradually transition away from oil and if we use it up as fast as we can there will be a pretty devastating crash. Slowly opening up new drilling sites as need warrants it is the prudent thing to do. And still, Obama has said he WOULD be open to allowing drilling in new places provided certain safeguards are in place.
- I always hear that lowering capital gains tax raises revenue, but that's only for the very short term, as investors sell off all their investments due to low taxes. I don't see how taxing capital gains like you'd tax other income is such a bad thing.

- At least we agree on something. For that matter, I really liked McCain in 2000, but he's changed his stance on so much since then.
- Obama had 129 present votes out of his 4000+ votes in the state senate. There is nothing unusual about this for Illinois state senators.
- Yeah, I admit his tenure in the senate was short, though I'm not seeing where you get 144 days, unless you're only counting the days the senate was in session or something. Still, he has more experience than Abraham Lincoln did when he ran for president.

- Rev. Wright isn't the demon he seems to be when you watch his entire sermons in context. Anyway, the Obama family didn't exactly go to every Sunday sermon.
- It is really easy to find things the Trinity Church did and said, then take them grossly out of context to make Obama seem like a Black Panther or something. Please don't do this, ok?
- Tony Rezko was really involved in Chicago politics. He donated to a bunch of campaigns and held fundraisers for candidates. Once the corruption charges came up, Obama dropped him and donated his money to charity. Obama isn't suspected of wrongdoing in any of the investigations surrounding Rezko.
- Barack served on a board with William Ayers. So what? It's not like they were best buddies, or Ayers is still in the Weather Underground. As a politician, you associate with so many people, you can't possibly vet every person you come across.

- Although his supporters have tried to play the race card, it doesn't help Barack any. If anything, it alienates him from white voters, who are the ones he needs to win.
- What in particular did he abandon after he beat Clinton, other than the pledge to use public financing? (I admit this last one was an underhanded thing to do, but he is a politician trying to win after all)

-Before the government decides to put millions into a health care system thats broke lets find out why it is. I used to work for a hospital system and I saw ALOT of waste. I just can't justify giving these people government dollars so they can play business as usual.
-A commander-in-chief is the commander of a nation's military forces, I personally don't think that we've had a President for YEARS that has been qualified for that position. Before a person should be able to send troops I feel that they should have a grasp on what goes on in the lines. This world is at a state where we need someone that knows about these things today, not training by trial and error like we've seen. Bush and Rumsfeld should send red flags for the election of future candidates.
-I agree that alternatives to oil should be explored; that should have been done already considering what we went through in the late "70"s. Untill then if there is as much as a drop of oil here in the states I say let's get the middle eastern oil monkey off our back.
-Right now capital gains on long term investments is 15% and I believe 28% on short term. In order to get the lower tax rate the investment has to be held for longer than one year. I can't see how this would create more of a sell off. This is just one example of his tax plan. I'm also not for windfall taxes, while the government taxes the cost of this will find it's way to us, Joe consumer.

-Don't they all. Makes me wonder what their definition of change really is. Maybe the option to change their looks to please the polls?
-If your there I would think it should either be a yes vote or a no vote. If this is the common I think they'd better look harder at their candidates. That's why they're elected, to make the hard decisions.
-The way I understood it, 144 days was the time period from which he was in Senate until he decided to run for President. As for Lincoln, that was a much simpler time.

-As for Rev. Wright I'll never be soled on the point that he's not that bad. This man preached hate from a place that should be preaching love. I've personally had a friend that I thought was the shit untill one day we saw a white woman with a black child. I won't go into our conversation but he's no longer a friend. He had MANY good points but in the end he was a racist, something I don't deal with very well.
-Tony Rezko was well known and people that dealt with him knew what he was about. Tony also helped out Obama with his land deal. While promoting change he was making deals like all the rest.
-If I were in politics and a person that was related to terrorist bombings here in the states I'd treat him like the plague. His statement in "01" should have been enough to run off Obama but it didn't. You can't vet everyone granted but this dudes past was well known in the Chicago circle of politics.

-"I don't look like the Presidents on our currency"....That was his statement. The GOP knows that just a mention of his color would bring nothing but suicide to their election hopes. So far, he's played it with McCain and depending on the point of view, with B. Clinton.
-Yeah, public financing is one. Then there is his vote on FISA, his change of stance on troop withdrawl, possible drilling for oil; you have to agree that some primary issues have been modified for the general election.
I'm getting the impression that you feel I'm a republican....I'm not. I've voted for both sides of the aisle and have also voted for the independent. In general, I think that 99.9% of all politicians are self-indulgent assholes.
