seed/strain description vs. reality...
Hey all,
Just wondering what others with more experience have to say.
I'm currently growing white rhino. the description on the site says its 45% indica / 55% sativa. It says it stays pretty short. But here i am with 4 plants that are taller than me (6'1). I have them tied down...but it's such a pain to work with/around them when they are all strung up...it seems to definitely show more of it's sativa side which is kind of a disappointment to me as i have limited head room and really wanted a shorter plant.
Do any of you more experienced growers find that descriptions on seed sites/catalogs tend to hold true? or are you usually surprised like i was...
Any experience welcomed, but super hugs and kisses to those with white rhino experience (Dutch Pimp...i'm hoping you'll have a quick word as i know you've done the nirvana rhino...)
thanks all

What kind of light are you working with? if your doing a grow with like a 1000 watt still thats kind of high for plants to get. The best thing you should have done was started flowering at 8inches and you could have had a smaller plants. I would say (if you havent started 12/12 yet that you should try supercropping them. Good luck!
Usually the Seed pack descriptions i get are true to a point

If you started out with too little light, it's common to get stretch. The descriptions are what the testers, who are running optimized systems, are getting.
Watch out for hermies in that line, fyi!
As with all things in life: Individual results may vary ;)

Yeah, i did veg them longer than usual. they were probably 18 inches when i put them in 12/12. now, under 2x400w hps they are all over 6 foot.
i'm sure i'm not providing the optimum conditions like the testers...but there really wasn't much stretching. the nodal spacing is pretty nice. i've got quite a few spots that are a good 15 inches of solid bud.
i'm not really complaining other than the height. In all my tie-down frustrations, i am actually enjoying all the side stalks that are rising up. it's like a wonderful little forest. or...as i like to think of white rhino having a bunch of tusks or horns...
alright. thanks for the advice. looks like i'll be flowering much sooner next time round!
peace!
skeet.
PS - I'll do my research, but could you just give me a quick rundown of "supercropping"? thanks!

without TRIMing or FIMing or SCOGing..white rhino likes to grow tall...as does all the white strains....5+ feet tall and top heavy...my kind of female....enjoy.
I consider 400 watts HID ..minimun for an outstanding grow. If you're got a magnetic HPS ballast...consider a CMH bulb next time...and knock 12 inches off the height.

haha you have hit upon one of my pet peeves! In the nursery world, this is supercropping:
http://boards.cannabis.com/basic-gro...ency-baby.html
You are probably referring to what us potheads have claimed the term to mean, which is the practice of forcing a single plant to produce a LOT of growing tips.
Let the plant get to 5 nodes.
Pinch off the growing tip. If you want to get fancy, pinch it so that you remove the folded-up LEAVES on the tip but leave at least a chunk of the NODE MATERIAL, whcih may then grow several new shoots.
Either way, this 'releases' lower nodes to grow branches.
Let each new branch get to 4-5 nodes, and repeat until you have as many fresh shoot sites as you like, but be warned, you will have to increase air flow and keep the very center of the plant pruned pretty clean or you end up with dead air (and dead tissue) in there.

Well, there's a reason the call it the " seedy" business...
With the established houses (Sensi, Greenhouse, Flying Dutchmen) seed is usually as advertised- unless they screw up ( we are talking live product, it happens). The older houses are usually good about working with you if seed doesn't perform at least sorta as advertised. They've been in biz for 20,30, in at least one case 40 years- they aren't gonna trash their rep over a couple euro in seed.
With the knock-off houses ( Nirvana, Resiviour Seeds, etc,) they're selling F1 and F2 gens of unstablized hybrids ( of unstabilized hybrids)- No one on earth could say with any real certainty what those seeds are gonna do. They will mostly trend twoard the center of a bell curve representing each characteristic of each parent- but you don't know anything about the parents as a stable gene pool, so it's a crap shoot.
Don't get me wrong- I've grown lots of Nirvana stock in my time, and some of it's been very good, but yer lucky to get one classic pheno out of multiple packs. However, that one special individual can be extra special- yer looking at F2s of what was very good dutch stock. If I had the space, and wanted to find me a mom that nobody else on earth had- I'd consider looking thru the Nirvana stock. If I needed several hundred identical seed starts- no way. Just not consistant enough. Fine for smaller ops, but no way for anything large. About the same goes for Rez's stuff, though the really crazy phenos are closer to the surface. His stuff, you'll probabley find a plant you like in every pack. May or may not resemble the description- though he's gotten a lot better as he's stabilized his stuff.
And let me state my great respect for anyone who's growing for seed- it ain't easy, and it ain't quick.

WOW 18" to 6 Ft That is a big BIG jump Normally double to triple the size at most at end of harvest... Seems like you have it under control. Like rhizome had said reputable company's are way more stable then the new guy's on the block...
That was w.o any topping or Fim ect... So they just shot up?
Good Luck GL1
Waiting for a smoke Report

Well...thinking about it...they are over 6 foot including the 5 gallon buckets they are in. so probably around 5 feet without the bucket. but yeah. i fimmed all but 1 of them. the one i didn't FIM is by far the tallest. the others have 2 - 4 branches coming off the main stem and they are so long and top heavy (just like Dutch said!) that they are tied up, down, left, and right!!!
It gave me an idea seeing the one really tall non-FIM'd one. i want to grow a really tall plant, no fimming or topping...get as big and strong and full of buds as possible...and have it ready to harvest around christmas time, have a party and decorate the huge plant as a christmas tree and everyone can cut a chunk off the tree and take it home as a party favor. Would you come?
heh heh.

boy, ya got that right  ... ever since I started playing 'beginner breeder', I usually wind up smoking someone else's strains, because all my plants are 'seeders' ... "I have always relied upon the generosity of strangers" - Scarlett O'Hara (and me)
