A â??vulnerableâ?? man cut off his own head with a chainsaw after being ordered to move out of his home to make way for developers, police believe.

David Phyallâ??s severed head was found beside the power tool inside his housing association flat shortly after receiving his eviction notice.

Detectives were today investigating the possibility that the 58-year-old killed himself rather than leave his home of eight years.

He was the last resident living on an estate earmarked for demolition. All 71 surrounding flats were empty.

Paramedics and police made the gruesome find after receiving a 999 call.

An inquest is now being carried out into the exact cause of death and what had happened to Mr Phyall, described as â??vulnerableâ??, beforehand.

It is understood police are not treating his death as suspicious.

Mr Phyall had lived in his flat at Bishopstoke in Eastleigh, Eastley, Hants, since 2000 and was fighting to stay there despite plans to bulldoze the entire area and rebuild it.

Many flats had already been boarded up.

Mr Phyall rented the property from Atlantic Housing Ltd.

He had been unhappy since the plans to level the flats and rebuild them were passed in 2006.

It is thought that he may have even been served with an eviction notice issued through the courts shortly before his death.

An inquest opened and adjourned by deputy central Hampshire coroner Simon Burge.

It listed the possible cause of death of Mr Phyall as â??complete transaction of the neckâ?? and â??chainsaw wound to the neck.â??

An ambulance service spokesman said: â??We were called to an address in Bishopstoke to reports to a â??concerns for welfare.â?�

â??A rapid response vehicle attended and a search found a patient had sustained serious injuries.â??


Ron Turtle, chairman of the Stoke Residentsâ?? Association, said there was one tenant left whom he believed to be a disabled man who rented a ground-floor flat from Atlantic Housing.

He said: â??They had offered him several places that were similar but he just didnâ??t want to move. In the end they had to go to court.â??

Lib Dem Bishopstoke Parish Council chairman Anne Winstanley said: â??The last I heard they were still negotiating with him to try to provide what he required to move into as an alternative.

â??It sounds very tragic for whatever the reason he met his death.â??


Councillor Winstanley added that Bodmin Road had become a target for vandalism and nuisance behaviour in recent months.

The flats are thought to have been built in the 1960s but Atlantic Housing had revealed it would cost them more to repair than rebuild.

Southampton building firm Drew Smith were awarded a 7.8m pounds contract to design and build 54 replacement flats and 24 houses.

Three of the flats at Bodmin Road had been purchased by tenants under the right to buy but were repurchased by Atlantic Housing to enable the redevelopment to take place.

Atlantic Housing was unavailable for comment.

That man deserves a Darwin Award for his stupidity and a gold star for his commitment. Takes some balls to cut off your head, especially with a chainsaw.

Maybe he was doing it for a bet? I would have taken that bet.

A bet lol, he probably had no reason to live.. sad but it can happen if you isolate yourself or something, I'm just guessing. Guess he wanted to go out with a bang as well, but seriously disgusting to think about how he would have got to this point and I'm guessing its not the redevelopment.

wow thats pretty crazy, fuck all that non-sense. I would have been long gone. No point in killing yourself over an eviction notice. Lots of people have to go through that shit. It's just part of life. People are gonna run you off, you just come back fighting stronger. you don't cut off your head with a chainsaw.

The word "vulnerable" is a polite way of saying he suffered from mental issues and goes a long way to explaining why he took such extreme action.
It's just a shame that nobody realised just how "vulnerable" he was.

This guy, for whatever reason, was screwing with greedy people.
Millions of dollars might make a man mean.
The article hinted at the harrassment he was getting.

Last time I saw something like this was also a real estate grab.
Good friend of mine was found with a neat little hole right between his eyes.
He had discovered an arson plot.
They were setting fire to the apartments of the "resisters" who refused to sell.
While the tenants were home!
(Needed the land for parking lots to service their other development.)

My friend published this information.

Terrible story... and a shame that people do feel that helpless. I do think that the idea of scandal and murder cover-up is intriguing. We all know that it is not out of the ordinary that people who get tangled up in money making schemes or other criminal activity meet a fate that is not always plain and simple.

Although, I don't think it is accurate to claim it is difficult to cut your head off with a chainsaw. Just start it, brace it on something, and fall into it.

Getting an eviction notice is serious, but it's nothing to lose you head over. Still, I'm sure that taking this step took a lot off his mind. Like a weight was lifted from his shoulders.

That is obviously TRUE... Very sad that no one seen any Signs of his vulnerability. People that committe suicide I feel take the Easy Way Out rather then deal w/ lifes challenges... I watched a Documentary on people that were jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. They filmed I think 70+ Jumpers in 1 Yr and they saved a few people more then once. They saved one guy and 2 days later he made the jump and Died. That happened w/ quite a few jumpers eventually they all met their destiny because they were all determined to jump. Only one jumper survived and he was glad to survive... Unfortunately 70 others did not have a second chance to rethink the value of their life... I feel Suicide is Hereditary I know a family who had 3 people commite suicide Mom and 2 sons. Then another set of buisness partners one blew his head off while coffee was bing served he went into the bedroom. Then his son Jumped of the George Washington Bridge... SAD:(
