What are the advantages and disadvantages of grinding bud or smoking it in pieces? Which do you prefer and what's the difference?
I'm used to grinding it, so are there any tips to smoking unground bud to get the most THC from it (in regards to the lighter).

For the lighter thing, I was talking about how long you hold the flame on the weed. Actually, I wish I could reword that now hahaha.

this is for soil but you can think of where the weed meets fire is the surface of the weed...

I def prefer unground weed for a bong though, It burns slower and whens its ground up fine it seems to burn so quick and hot I can't stand it.
I use a whole chunk of a nug, with what's left of the stem stuck down the hole in the bowl, and just don't smoke it all the way down into the shrubbery. I think ground weed in bongs burns too fast, ends up in bongfires too often, and seems to make more of a mess of the inside of the bong.
I find it burns better, but I think all bongs goes thru to much..
I have never grinded dank, I always used it on commercial swag..

I just smoke the way it is given to me, whether it is ground up or in big nugs. But i found the ground up to hit faster.
grinding makes it burn more evenly and quicker, but it gets hot really quick, and can burn too quick.
i feel that a light grind. one where it is enough to seperate the leaf from the stem mostly so that you have a leafy grind, not a powdery one then that is perfect, but either way is good, though still nuggety is nice though too.
I always grind my weed, more surface area means better combustion, whitch means fatter hits. I dont even smoke bowls I pack the bowl full and roast it in one hit, far more efficient then hitting a bowl hit by hit.
unless im with a bunch of people then slightly ripped up nug is preferable because it lasts longer.

personally, i would never grind for a bong; you usually end up pulling a lot through, and like most people said, it burns WAY faster.
as for holding the lighter to the bud, i never do it more than 1 second, literally its just a quick flick. you get more of a 'vaporizer' effect, because you arent just holding an open flame to the bud and torching the whole thing...the cherry heats up the trichomes and they sort of melt. not to mention youd be sucking up all those nice lighter fluid vapors...:blueknife:
Dude obviously your using a screen or ash as a screen if you grind your weed. I always use a screen it makes for the best hits once you use a screen you cant not. I pack one hitters and cash the whole thing no smoke is lost to a cherry while im exhaling or whatever. I find this to be the most efficent way to use my bong.Quote:

Thats exactly how I blaze, with a the bong, glass screen, and ground weed. I originally started doing it at home because I would take one tokers and blow them out my window to avoid the smell. but now even though I can blaze freely I still use that method because you get more bang for your buck.Quote:

It really depends on the bong. A 3' bong would be a lot to rip in one sitting (usually to the point of illness) while a little corona bottole or 18" or less you use ground up with an ash catcher.
It should always be ground, no matter what you are smoking it out of. It just works better. However, you do have to smoke it differently: Generally, if smoking with more than one person, the bowl will cherry, and you do not need to relight it many times. If you do so, that is a waste. If smoking alone, get something flat you can rest on top of the bowl, and it'll be extinguished very quickly, not wasting any. My friend uses a piece of leather, and it works well for him. I use the top of my grinder (metal, burning isn't an issue) but make sure whatever you use is heatproof.
If you grind the bud, pull more slowly, otherwise it can pull through. Doing this will get you a much bigger hit. You don't need to light it for a long time, once the bud is lit, remove the lighter. If you start at the side of a bowl, and cherry til the end (or very close to it) the fire will gradually move across the bowl. It lasts forever, and its called "cornering the bowl." I used to not grind, then I bought a grinder. I'm never going back.:cool:

I don't know how many people smoke mids but I do and I grind them. but nugs don't them unless u want keif:stoned:

i like to grind it all no matter how i'm tokin. i like collecting the keef in my grinder to put in a bowl with a lil weed, or for pressing into hash. i've never noticed a big enough difference in grinding or not grinding for me not to use my grinder.
I grind my weed no matter what, but I've found that you can fit more weed that's been through the grinder in a bowl, than you can breaking up by hand...
This leads to a more potent bowl, by volume. I use a glass screen, so shit doesn't get yanked through very much.
You want your ash to look nice and white after you get done smoking the bowl not chunks of charcoal. All the white means you smoked everything.. no waste. Besides the thc burns off before the bowl is even gone anyway if that makes sense... if not cannabinoids have a boiling point of between 180-200° C (355-392° F). Before they turn gaseous, at around 106° C (220° F), the carboxyl group is released from the molecule as carbon dioxide and water vapor.
One more thing people that think that the more smoke they blow out of their mouths the higher you get off that bowl this is simply not the case. All their during is getting bad breath and fucking their teeth up more. If it tastes like carbon ass dont smoke it.
I never grind my bud it burns to fast and I get less hit control. I break it up into nice little piece's, probably the size of bb, and plop them on top of each other till a fat bowl is packed. This way I can control how big my hit is and it seems to burn slower and you get more hits out of your nug.
i just break it down with my fingers...but i definitely think it should be broke down... full nugs = clogged bong...i HATE it when the bowl gets clogged...

kumfortably: for me a grinder is not convenient at all..i smoke on the go...im not luggin around a backpack like some folks do just to keep pot toys in :)
and i use a kief box.. i prefer a good quality kief rather than a mixture of leaf and kief ...which is all u get form a ginder.. but if i had a crapload of bud to grind id definitely appreciate a grinder..but for joints or a bowl i can use my fingers :jointsmile:
I only skimmed all the posts, so correct me if someone did, but i'm suprised nobody brough this up yet. everyone ive ever smoked with uses a combination.
First you stuff a big nug in the bottom being careful not to clog it. A screen or adeptly placed stem will also do the trick, but we dont usually have screens on hand, and nobody wants to accidentally smoke a stem (especially one big enough to fill a slide hole). then put some chunky hand broken stuff on that, and fill the rest of the bowl (usually at least half) with some fine ground stuff and/or kief. since the stuff on top is so fine it always cherries in 1 hit, then slows down a bit at the small nugs after everyone takes a huuuuge first rip.

To keep it burning slower, try rolling up a little bit of ground into a ball and then placing this at the bottom of the bowl. Tamp it down a bit, but not too much or it will be hard to draw. Then place ground bud on top of this, flick your bic (literally for a second or less) and smoke that $hit!
I always grind my weed, whether we are using our bong,one of our bubblers,or some other peace i grind up enough for the night then just keep what im gonna smoke in the grinder. the rest I put back in a stash can till next time.
