Heat Problems Causing wacky leaves?

Hey all.

Grow #3 for me.

NL x Skunk#1
roughly 4.5 weeks flowering
DWC
GH Nutes
ph 5.8-6.1
Temp 72 - 88 F
Humidity 50-82%
hydroton
800w HPS (400w x 2)
Air cooled hoods with 130 cfm fan
another 130 cfm fan exhausting the room
1 passive air intake.


The plants are looking pretty good except they seem to have slowed and a lot of the fan leaves look kinda weird. A lot of skinny fingers and they aren't really spread out. Also they are pretty dark green. I did some searching and came across this thread http://boards.cannabis.com/plant-pro...ml#post1839278
but didn't find a definitive answer for my issue.

Take a look at the photos (sorry for the cell phone pics...i'll take better ones later) I'm betting it has everything to do with the heat and high humidity. Is it normal for humidity to jump really high during the dark period? I moved the lights up about 6 inches. Any advice on how to get the temps and humidity down? AC dehumidifies too right? maybe i should get a little AC unit.

Pic 2: A promising bunch of buds, but check out the straight, pointed down leaves. they aren't drooping. they are kinda clawed, but mostly just straight and pointing down. weird...

#1- Leaf-set is normal for certain strains. I'd focus more on the weird blotches.
#2- :eek: You got problems. Kill one of your lights right away. That wilt is a sign of water uptake problems.

Check the roots for discoloration. If they are not bright white and turgid... you've got the Dreaded Root Rot.

You 80% humidity is way too high. How are you oxygenating your res? Can you add a dehumidifier of a/c to the room, or more exhaust?

Here's a pic of the roots. they look pretty good to me...some minor yellowing from the nutes, but i don't think there's anything too serious.

as far as oxygenating the res...there are 4 airstones in there. 1 hanging 3 inches below each net pot. You may be able to see in the pic.

I'll try and use some DampRid or dehumidify or something. Add more exhaust...whatever it takes. Not that it changes the situation, but the high humidity comes at "night"...when lights are on the RH is usually around 50%

Sounds like root rot is out then. The roots look excellent. Good!

Now let's see about the other. Night temps could be leaving you with dewfall. You'll want to start a treatment of Serenade to protect against various fungi that could attack your plants in the moist conditions. When you get home, would you mind trying to get pics of the worst-affected leaves, plus some that have only MILD symptoms (blotching but not wilt)? Try propping your phone or camera on a tripod or anything that won't move when you press the button. I want to see that damage pattern.

How is the health of the base of your main stem on the wilty plant? Do you see signs of damage/fungal infection?
Is that plant in a part of the room that does not get much air circulation?
How are you moving air within the chamber, apart from exhaust?
Where is your intake, and how large is it? Is it obstructed?
Good exhaust may solve your humidity problem. You really want to keep it below 50% at all times in flower or you will end up with rot.

This first set is just pics of the leaves. i hope it shows a sense of range.

Next are a few shots of some of the bud sites...

I noticed that i'm getting a lot of weird numbered fans...3 leaves, 1 leaves, 4 leaves...you get the idea.

The Stems. I only shot 2 of 4 stems...they are all pretty much the same.

I know it's REALLY overcrowded. I attached a pic of the 5 gallon buckets that will be used in the next grow. Keepin it simple...just 4 plants...plenty of room...clean and simple.

And the room/fans/environment...

Pic 1: My 2 400w HPS with air cooled hoods. You can't see it, but there's an exhaust fan with a carbon filter behind the lights.

Pic 2: My 16" oscillating fan that keeps air moving around the flower side. You can see my passive intake in the upper right.

Pic 3: close up of 4" passive intake. delivers air to the center of the room. i think i need at least one more of these.

Pic 4: My veg side. Tower fan, keeps it movin.

Pic 5: my exhaust fans taken from outside the room. The left has the carbon filter, the right cools the lights. they are both on 24 hours.

In the pics, I actually don't see serious issues.
You have really good resination even on the fan leaves.
The odd numbers are pretty much to be expected during flower.
The twisty leaves at the bud sites may be either strain related or a sign of a problem. Some strains just do that naturally.
I do see damage that looks like it is from thrips- white freckles on the leaf surfaces.
There's no sign of any reason for the stem bases to be rotted.
The room setup looks great, if a bit full. With adequate air flow, even the crowding shouldn't really cause trouble.
That one plant that was wilty- did it recover after dropping the light intensity? Stupid 'is the unit plugged in' question- had that res run out of water? (sorry... had to ask lol)

Hey Stinky,

Thrips...there are little tiny bugs crawling about. they are few and far between. I researched them a while back but never reached a conclusion as to what they were. They disappeared for a while and i thought they were gone...but apparently not.
I'll do some searching on Thrips and see if i can knock em out.

I and another friend of mine have grown/are growing this strain before (Northern Lights x Skunk #1)...i'll check and see if he's ever had curly leaves before...i don't remember seeing them before...if it isn't strain related...what could it be indicating?

And no, the res was not dry, perhaps low a couple days...but never dry.

I'm still battling the high humidity. I gotta get an AC or dehumidifier down there.

Maybe there isn't anything wrong...i'm not used to that!!! Maybe i should have posted this as "Over Loving Grower having much success...HELP!!!!!" or "Noob grower seeks constant attention!!!" hahah...anyways...

Just thought i'd give an update with these ladies. They are lookin pretty nice. They're 6 weeks today.

thanks for your help. looks like you were right again! i've lowered the RH and just let them be and they are boomin. This is grow 3 and already looking light years ahead of my 1st and 2nd.

Harvested last night and thought you might like to see the results.

4 plants and one Runt harvested.

here's the wet weights:

plant 1: 125g / 4.4 oz

plant 2: 174g / 6.1 oz

plant 3: 165g / 5.8 oz

plant 4: 141g / 4.9 oz

the runt: 24g / 0.8 oz

total wet: 629g / 22.18 oz

what's the best way to estimate the dry weight? i've heard it's 1/4 the wet weight. so roughly 158g / 5.5 oz?

i'm pleased. check out the pics. sorry about the blurred backgrounds. i have some nervous friends who lent a hand and made a few cameo appearances in the pics.

Dry weight is going to be about 20% of wet weight. No matter how you slice it, that is a nice crop.

In regard to wacky leaves:

I've noticed that my plants that are close to the foil tape reflector have more leaf issues then the ones in my full cabinet

Also I have a strain of halloween that seems to have a re-occuring leaf deformation that comes through in each clone that I grow. All of the growth is good, but somewhat like Nemo (the fish) it has a weak looking, semi-perforated leaf...

All in all, its looks like you did okay....
