Putting hot water as opposed to cold, then ice if you have a separate ice holder is genius.
Smoothest hits on earth, the hot water vapor helps to get rid of the harshness of the smoke immensely.
Figured I'd post another cool tip that'll mysteriously disappear like my Soldering Iron thread about lighting your pot with a hot soldering iron (The hell is with that? It was verified that a clean soldering iron was safe, it's not a DIY or Homemade, so I don't get it?)
Hot water and cold water would make the bong have different temperatures in side it. Multiple temps. will result in the glass being easier to break. I've personally never tried this and cant imagine it would actually make it smoother. All your doing is risking your bong when you do that. Tap it on the sink while filling it up and CRACK its gone.
I wouldn't reccomend trying this...

I've done it multiple times, the water isn't that effin hot, it's hot enough to steam up, hardly hot enough to mess with good pyrex that you can easily bake and cook on the stove with.
No troubles, and smoother hits for surely.
And I did say ice catcher, it keeps the ice from touching the hot water at all.
ya I do it in my friends roor all the time i think it would only be a problem if its cheap thinner glass
Yeah I tried the soldering iron thing, it didn't work effectivly.

The harsh parts of smoke are water-soluble. They become moreso with temperature increase. So hot water will make your smoke have a higher proportion of THC to pointless compounds like chlorophyll.
It makes a smoother hit by the steam and hot water vapor along with the hot water itself attaching to the chlorophyll and other bullshit that makes smoke harsh.Quote:

see, i see the hot water as being smoother, but i dont feel that it has too much to do with the other chemicals getting trapped in the water, not enough of them contact the water due to the fact that your blowing smoke bubbles, as much as the fact that instead of cooling the outside of the bubble with a hot inner core, your lowering the overall temperature of all the smoke, along with adding water vapor to the smoke. Due to the water vapor, your getting less of a hit, but not a very noticeable one.
hot water=good hits.
every so often i still have a cough or two after some hot water rips, but they are usually short lived, and much easier with the hot water. Everyone just needs to try it. The hottest water you get out of your tap works perfect.
I remember trying it out of hot water once and it got really foamy and the hit tasted weird to me. If I had an ice catcher I would try actually if I had a bong I would try but some moron (me) broke it. Actually I think it was shotty workmanship because it just fell over on the carpet and the damn thing seperated into two with a clean cut between the curve of the tube part and the bottom part. The damn edge is so sharp I cut myself pretty good picking it up and didn't even realize until I saw the blood running down my hand. Never buying another glass bong again.
Hot water is amazing, but the bong has gotta be really clean. Otherwise you just get a hit that tastes like bong water.
And yes, the hits are still plenty thick. The water is hot and the steam soothes your throat and lungs. It sounds like bullshit, I know. But once you try it, its absolutely unbelievable. You'll get wrecked and your lungs and throat aren't the wiser...:thumbsup:

the temperature change isnt as bad when it goes from cold to hot like when you use it to take hits with hot water, its when it goes from really hot to really cold really quickly that glass breaks, something about the structure makes it happen, but rarely when it goes from cold to hot,
so hot water bong=safe, hot bong+cold water=bad
If you are really concerned, just use the hot water. It is by far the more important "half" of this equation.
Also, a good quality pyrex bong will have no issue with this. If you bought a cheap glass bong, it will break easily. Buy quality, it'll last.

In terms of smoothness, as others have already mentioned, there are two factors: first, water vapor combines with smoke to give you more oxygen as you take the hit. This makes the smoke slightly less dense, but much easier on the lungs, perhaps allowing even bigger hits. I recall seeing bongs actually designed with small holes (cyclone I believe) to allow air in for the same purposes. The second factor, which I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned much, is more extensive filtration of carcinogens and harsh particles contained within the smoke. This is because with higher temperature, solubility increases, meaning the chemicals stay in the water, not in your lungs. This also means, however, that you may be losing more THC (not to mention other cannabinoids), as that too has higher solubility in conditions of high temperature. For this reason, I'd avoid boiling water - think cannabis tea - and stick to warm or hot.
Also, don't that more stuff in your water means more of a "bong water" effect, which is that much nastier if some of the water is evaporating, so you'll probably want to change your water between sessions.
While your right about extreme temperature change in glass causing weakness and even cracks that does not mean that using this method will break a heavy glass Pyrex bong. The temperature were talking about are not extreme enough. I am a glass artist who makes a lot of pipes and the only time you should have this problem is if the glass was annealed wrong. I wouldnâ??t boil the water but if youâ??re just using hot tape water you will be fine. If something does go wrong that only means the guy who made your bong didnâ??t know what he was doing when he put it in the kiln.Quote:

I never liked hot water in a bong, I would think you get less THC per hit too by volume due to the heat expanding the air? I guess it would hurt less because of a smaller hit
Isn't getting too much vapor into your lungs bad? causes an infection or something? I'm not too sure something I faintly remember... someone a doctor that can verify or deny?
