outdoor lst - come on in

hello everyone, thought i would share my outdoor grow this summer. i am trying to keep my plants as horizontal as possible, and so far things are looking great. they are from bagseed planted in peat bags march 21, and they have been outdoors for about 3 weeks.

they are in 3 gallon pots now and will be putting them in large holes with burlap and mulch to reduce my watering frequency. I have been giving them piranha beneficial fungi, dark energy, protekt drought/heatstress protection, and botanicare veg and liquid karma for the first time today. they will be on drip for the rest of the way soon.

I can't figure out how to upload pics I might not be able to yet due to lack of posts?

Hey, Greenatik....welcome to the site.....thanks for the kind words in my log, for me, this whole site is a great source of inspiration...i never used lst until i joined this site, and saw how it's done...

To upload pix try attachments or manage attachments after hitting post reply....if you can't upload pix then you need at least 50 posts....

awesome, you are just the person i wanted lurking my journal zeb :thumbsup: .After seeing your indoor lst I am more than excited to see how well it goes outdoors.

Anyone know anything at all about the strain pineapple x lavender (pilav) ? It was a clone from the club and got put directly outside for a week before transplanting - it got pretty bruised up and I thought it was going to die so I moved it back inside under my fluoro setup and its starting to turn around. I had to cut off a whole set of leaves because they were so badly saturated and yellow, but it does have quite a bit of new growth shooting up. I am thinking that it has a bit of sativa due to its small skinny leaves...

Looks like I might be going on a post spree this next week to get my 50 :stoned:

Any idea where the pineapple came from in that cross? C99 pheno maybe? I know Soma makes a lavender strain. It's a really colorful mostly indica breed.

Orzy - I'm really not sure, I haven't been able to get much on either strains, especially pineapple. I grew lavender x nl outside last year and the lavender definitely influenced some of the purple/pink crazy hairs. i really wanted to know if this was an indoor specific strain, but im sure it will still do pretty well outside once transplanted and healthy again.

So, you have put the plant outside and it started to get yellow and was dieing?? how much soil dose the plant have??And how old/big is it?? Usually if i have problems like this, i transplant the plant into a bigger pot, or transplant it out....usually fresh soil helps....maybe you should transplant it outside if it's not too cold anymore...

well its complicated - I have one partner with this outside grow and he has a few clones from the club and i have ten from bagseed - he thought that it would be fine to keep them in rockwool a week w/o transplanting :weedpoke: - I told him that they needed to be transplanted but w/e his other pilav died and I was barely able to revive this one. It was sitting in a small cup with water and it got horribly saturated - idiot!

Lst outdoors?? no...the truth is i used lst in my last indoor grow for the first time....but i think i gonna try it outdoors this year, to see if the lstd plants have a bigger yield...lst is good if you have limited space(indoors), but outdoors i'm not sure if it's any good....:wtf:
It yet has to be tested if it's really worth the work outdoors....

Yeah, that move is hilarious....sad that the end is a bit fucked up IMO...

yeah chev is a badass in his last few hours and certainly gets his revenge, but their should of been an antidote - so there could of been a sequel (although he would have to get injected again to suit the theme).

as for the lst outdoors, i have heard that it will definitely increase yield and is worth it. a local grower claims it to be "the only way to grow outdoors - just bend the fucker over and tie it to a stake." He said they can get up to 10-15 ft long - but this is just what I have been hearing. my pictures sure do prove that they love being bent over and receiving that extra light to the stem. my 1 month 4 day plant (from seed) has over a nickel thick stem

this should be interesting for everyone, even if it doesn't turn out better then growing naturally

plants look ok today, they were really thirsty but I couldn't visit them all week. more training has been done, which looks freakin good! :woohoo: They will wrap around in a circle once then off to wherever the best sunlight is. I have a couple of indoor plants I'd like to show off. Pineapple x lavender from a friend which was from a club, he left it sitting in a cup of water w/ it in rockwool for a week 1/2 almost killed the plant, and now, a week later, looks healthy as can be. its in botanicare cocogro under 26000 lumens in a small bin. it gets liquid karma and just started training yesterday ('low stress' training)

the other seedling is so squat and has fat leaves, that strain is God's Gift... also in cocogro...

I'm hoping to get the courage for an outdoor grow after I get a few indoor ones under my belt.

I'll be watching this one closely. If I do an outdoor grow I don't think I'll be able to give it the attention lst requires but this will be good knowledge regardless. :thumbsup:

right before i posted the new pics i was browsing your flower log and your plants sure turned out stalky. good job man!

If you can visit your outdoor crop once a month, I think that even a little LST-ing will be beneficial. Just bend long pieces of hanger in a U, and use that to stake down the main stem once or twice. But, like in my situation, I really don't think keeping the plants really low is helping my insect problem :(

Found a bug that used a lower leaf like a cacoon. It was sealed shut and i was like wtf? pried it apart and found some kind of bug using it as its nest. getting pissed to say the least even with organic pesticide.

outdoors can produce some great yields, but it is risky!

not to mention about 6 plants lost already to deer or small critter munches, they like to just take off the whole top of the plant and leave a nib of stem sticking above the soil..

animals are gone now just bugs, solution will come soon even if i have to step it up w/ some strong stuff to sweep the surrounding areas

The plants look nice, but why are they in a pot?? You don't want to transplant them in the soil?? Other thing is, in summer, when you have watered the plants and the sun shines on those black pots, they can get so warm, that the roots simply get cooked. I have lost many plants because of this a few years back.....

Yes black absorbs heat white reflects heat, the roots should be cooler in the ground.:)

the ground is not an option for many of them as I can not dig more than 8 inches deep. it is very rocky :( they are being transplanted out of the pots into burlap bags within the week so hopefully they will enjoy that better. thanks for the heads up I read that a while back and it had me worried.

well i checked on my plants yesterday and ... :woohoo: ... all I can say is this next picture update is going to be a good one :thumbsup:

out of my 8, 1 is probably for sure a hermaphrodite (very unusual looking), and the rest, well they havent shown their sex yet, but one is really dark green now out of nowhere i come back a week later and its twice as dark as the other plants. the hermy and this one are the only two seeds of different genetics (i think, bagseed ya know :stoned::stoned:)

the pests are subsiding, and with some new stuff, diatomaceous earth for the slugs, and a pesticide with miticide that should fix the rest of whats there... hopefully

think ill post some pics in a little bit of pilav in his new home, my pc.

Ok folks, I don't feel like creating a separate thread for pilav, so I will just post pics and updates of both the outdoor grow and this one, which is inside a very old pc case.

I got the case for $14.50, which came with the exhaust fan and power supply. The drive bays were WELDED in place, making me wish I had splurged on a case from our century... Not going to go into details, but it involved heavy duty pliers and about 4 hours of persistence. Picked up some white poly from the hydro store, and white duct tape to make it official. I really wanted to get some spray adhesive and go that route, but time was of the essence, so I had to slam this grow together. Didn't even get to test for temp, but it seems to be cool enough :)

I am working on getting it 100% light tight and adding a home made carbon filter. got the idea from icmag, it involves two metal meshed pencil holders, a pair of pantyhose and some carbon. I will post pics of it when I complete it.

Pilav has been in her new home for 3 days now, on 12/12. four 23 watt cfls.

This is what i came up with, SYMPTOMS Red Stems nutrient N-P-K-Mg, that are the problem.
What is calmag for i have not heard of it?
But wait for more advice dont take my word for it as someone may know different.

Just came up with this also.
NITROGEN (N)
Pale plants, red stems, smaller growth. Rapid yellowing of lower leaves progressing up the plant. Add any chemical fertilizer containing N. Treated plants recover in about a week.

POTASSIUM (K)
Affected plants are usually tallest and appear to be most vigorous. Necrotic spots form on lower leaves. Red stems. Leaves appear pale or yellow. Add chemical fertilizer containing K.

I dont think your plant is showing these symtoms so this may not be of any use to you.

Thanks for that info, it really confirms that the reddish stems were a magnesium deficiency (fingers crossed)

CalMag is a product for soil less or nuteless mediums. Since pilav is in cocogro, as Stinky has informed me, it is imperative to feed the plant these nutrients because the coco scavenges up any calcium

Thanks a bunch, the grow is going ok, kind of dissapointed after checking on them today (i have pics and will post later). very very heat stressed as it hit 100 today and yesterday. hopefully 4 more days until the transplant. Many leaves were completely withered but... bugs are under control now.

How old are your babies that you are starting the lst-ing on? I was instructed to wait until 3-4 leaf sets, but I started earlier then that. Just make sure its low stress, and nothing too abrupt at an early stage.

glad my grow is helpin some peoples, feel free to ask questions about anything im doing i will explain it all in detail

Also, a side note, if you are in pots an easy way to wrap the stem around the pots as I have been discovering is by - Take the piece of hanger and make a hook so the branch is hooked to the lip of the pot (if that makes any sense)

My stems are getting fat and the pieces of hanger, no matter how long, don't hold the fatter stems anymore

oh and you can see on a couple of the lst pics how hard it is to keep that stem down, the soil was way too fertile and it pulled the hanger right up, but as soon as I transplant into their holes, I can start training them along the ground. looks funky right now, but hey, they seem to like it !
