"I BELIEVE" FL license plate - WTF

OK, this wonderful state of florida I live in has decided to create a license plate with "I BELIEVE" printed on it, and the monies collected will go to, get this, faith based youth groups.......I am getting so fucking angry at this shit. how the hell does that work... oh right Jeb Bush. the rest of you think you got it bad we got 2 of em over us. sounds like church and state are getting along nicely.

and before im attacked, the first thing I did was contact my Rep. and let him know how I feel...a bit more eloquently though...lol

Anyone with something like 10,000 signatures on a petition can get their own plate. Find 9,999 others to make a plate saying "I DON'T".

its not so much the plate, as it is, its the state supporting the church that bothers me.

Yeah- that's NOT cool. Could have expected as much, though, in a state that has a Bush named 'Jeb' at the wheel. I want a vanity plate that says "I BELIEVE" but in reference to the Red Sox not sucking any more. Thought the State and the Church were to stay out of each others' affairs.

HAD a Bush named Jeb. Now we have a guy named Crist.

I *should* be bothered by this plate.. but I'm not. I'm moving out of the militant-atheist phase and into one of amused tolerance. (barely tolerant, but still)

DOH!!! :stoned:my bad (f'n pothead). yeah Jebs gone...lol. yeah I try to stay in the amused tolerance zone(glad to have a name for it now...lol) but this just hit me hard last night. I work in local delivery and with the amount of "jesus fish" we have in the area im sure this will be everywhere.

When my woman first mentioned this "I Believe" plate to me the other day and I came up with the "I Don't" response, she was all ready to go post the idea somewhere and get the petition ball rolling. I'll repeat what I told her next:


If anyone tried to do a serious response to that plate, they should pick a charity VERY carefully. It should be something that is beyond reproach with religious and non-religious alike. (that eliminates the Red Cross and United Way, for example.. too corrupt) It should be something that is not just an obvious shot at the "I Believe" plate and whatever charity is attached to it.


Why? Because a cheap shot is still a cheap shot, no matter how long you run with the joke. Make a serious effort.. be taken seriously.

It's similar to my argument against things like "4/20" and stereotypical behavio(u)r. Weed will not be legitimized in the eyes of the non-weed-using public by the efforts of people who say things like "duuude 4/20 braaah". They expect us to act like lazy idiot stoners. It will be the efforts of average, upstanding citizens risking their necks by standing up and telling people they smoke weed and that they feel it improves their lives. (as it has improved mine) Anyway, back to the analogy: Few religious types are going to take a cheap shot seriously.. they expect atheists like myself to sit around all day mocking them for their ignorance and such. They don't expect us to be charitable for the sake of charity. They expect us to be arrogant and self-centered and evil. I'm not saying every christian thinks every atheist is evil, but the sentiment is out there.


In other words: Only do an "I Don't" plate if you're serious about making one work legitimately. Otherwise, you're not going to get people like me risking having my 25 year old car trashed by a bunch of hateful good ol' boys who saw my plate and thought I was "gettin' uppity" or "puttin' on airs" or something. Don't forget that you're still living in the South.. watch the American road trip episode of Top Gear to see how people who deliberately provoke the locals are treated.

Religion in the USA is dying and its dying fast. I cant tell you how many people my age (19) are agnostic, atheists or non-religious. Its a growing trend in our society and will only become more common as our generation reproduces. I can tell you one thing for sure my kid is not gonna be religious. WOW. It's worse than I had imagined it to be. This isn't just about generic faith-based charities... this is specifically for CHRISTIAN charities... I must say I'm shocked. Yes, we understand that. Just as my state has several, which you may pruchase for an additional fee and the proceeds get donated to things like cancer research, fish and wildlife, early childhood education, etc... but no money goes to any church groups! It's not supposed to work like that! The government is NOT meant to be helping religious groups fundraise; it's AGAINST THE LAW! But what does the law matter these days? Grrrr.

Believe it or not, there was a court case in New Hampshire about exactly that. A NH resident put a bit of masking tape over the part of the official state license plate that says 'Live Free Or Die', just covering the part that says 'Or Die' (the font on that plate stands only ~3/4" so the bit of tape was probably only 2 inches long). He claimed that he was offended by that part of the statement because he did not believe it was our right to choose death or martyrdom or something along those lines. He was charged with obscuring vehicle tags, even though the tag number, expiration, and issuing state were still visible.

Well, once again I'll be the odd one out on this. These personalized plates are for the amusement of the individual...nothing more. Whether it be a football team, military style, etc....it all relates to a persons "hobby" for lack of better terms.

As for the "faith based youth groups"....as long as it isn't costing the rest of the tax payers anything big deal. Makes me wonder if there are any sort of subsidy from plate sales for new sports statiums. What about those that don't give a rats about the NFL?

Let someone from Chicago go rolling through Green Bay with a Bears license plate....LOL, they'll get the same reception as an athiest looking at an "I Believe" plate.

I believe you are reaching to make the argument that somenhow the government of Florida has been compromised, or done something bad.

Until they FORCE you to buy the plate against your will, then I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Fact is you don't have to buy the plate or have any of your money going to that charity. You do have a choice correct?
