A Third American War in the Making?
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
The US Congress, the US media, the American people, and the United Nations, are looking the other way as Cheney prepares his attack on Iran.
If only America had an independent media and an opposition party. If there were a shred of integrity left in American political life, perhaps a third act of naked aggression--a third war crime under the Nuremberg standard--by the Bush Regime could be prevented.
On March 30, the Russian News & Information Agency, Novosti, cited "a high-ranking security source: "The latest military intelligence data point to heightened US military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran."
According to Novosti, Russian Colonel General Leonid Ivashov said "that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future."
The chief of Russia's general staff, Yuri Baluyevsky, said last November that Russia was beefing up its military in response to US aggression, but that the Russian military is not "obliged to defend the world from the evil Americans."
On March 29, OpEdNews cited a report by the Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz, which was picked up by the German news service, DPA. The Saudi newspaper reported on March 22, the day following Cheney's visit with the kingdom's rulers, that the Saudi Shura Council is preparing "national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors."
And Admiral William "there will be no attack on Iran on my watch" Fallon has been removed as US chief of Central Command, thus clearing the way for Cheney's planned attack on Iran.
The Iranians don't seem to believe it, despite the dispatch of US nuclear submarines and another aircraft carrier attack group to the Persian Gulf. To counter any Iranian missiles launched in response to an attack, the US is deploying anti-missile defenses to protect US bases and Saudi oil fields.
Two massive failures by the American media, the Democratic Party, and the American people have paved the way for Cheney's long planned attack on Iran. One failure is the lack of skepticism about the US government's explanation of 9/11. The other failure is the Democrats' refusal to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush for lying to the Congress, the American people, and the world and launching an invasion of Iraq based on deception and fabricated evidence.
If an American president can start a war exactly as Adolf Hitler did with pure lies and not be held accountable, he can get away with anything. And Bush and his evil regime have.
Hitler launched World War II with his invasion of Poland after staging a "Polish attack" on a German radio station. On the night of August 31, 1939, a group of Nazis disguised in Polish uniforms seized a radio station in Germany. Hitler announced that "last night Polish troops crossed the frontier and attacked Germany," a claim no more true than the Bush Regime's claim that "Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction." Hitler's lie failed, because his invasion of Poland, which began the next day allegedly in reprisal for the Polish attack, had obviously been planned for many months.
Iran is a beautiful and developed country. It is an ancient civilization. It has attacked no one. Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Iran is permitted by the treaty to have a nuclear energy program. The Bush Regime's case against Iran is based on the Bush Regime's desire to deny Iran its rights under the treaty.
The International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors have repeatedly reported that they have found no evidence of an Iranian nuclear weapons program. Despite all the disinformation from US Gen. Petraeus and other Bush Regime military lackeys, Iran is not arming the Iraqis who are resisting the American occupation.
If Iran were arming insurgents, the insurgents would have two weapons that would neutralize the US advantage in the Iraqi conflict: missiles to knock down US helicopter gunships and rocket-propelled grenades that knock out American tanks. The insurgents do not have these weapons and must construct clumsy anti-tank weapons out of artillery shells. The insurgents are helpless against US air power and cannot mass forces to take on the American troops.
Indiscriminate American violence has reduced Iraq to rubble. The civilian infrastructure is essentially destroyed--electricity, water and sewer systems, medical care and schools. Depleted uranium is everywhere poisoning everyone, including US troops. There is no economy, and half or more of Iraqis are unemployed. Literally no Iraqi family has escaped an injury or a death as a consequence of the US invasion. Millions of Iraqis have become displaced persons. A developed country with a professional middle class has been destroyed because of lies told by the President and Vice President of the US. The Bush Regime's lies are echoed by a neoconservative media, and have gone unchallenged by the opposition party and an indifferent American public.
In Afghanistan, death and destruction rains on even the smallest village from the air. America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are wars against the civilian populations.
Just as the world could not believe Hitler's next horror and thus was always unprepared, the Iranians despite all the evidence cannot believe that even the Great Satan would gratuitously attack Iran based on nothing but lies about non-existent nuclear weapons.
Iran's only chance would be to strike before the US delivers the first blow. Instead of using its missiles to take out the Saudi oil fields and to sink the US aircraft carriers, instead of closing the Strait of Hormuz, instead of arming the Iraqi Shi'ites and moving them to insurgency, Iran is perched like a sitting duck in denial even as the US and its Iraqi puppet Maliki move to eliminate Al Sadr's Iraqi Shi'ite militia in order to avoid supply disruptions and a Shi'ite rebellion in Iraq when the US attack on Iran comes.
It is important to emphasize that Iran is making no moves toward war. Having tamed, blackmailed, and purchased Congress, the US media, and US allies and puppets, Cheney might delight in the arrogance with which he can now attack Iran free of any restraint or fabricated provocation. On the other hand, he might cover himself by orchestrating an "Iranian provocation" to justify his attack as a response. But like Hitler's planned attack against Poland, Cheney's attack on Iran has long been in the works.
On March 29 the Associated Press reported that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi "poured contempt on fellow Arab leaders" at the Arab summit that day. Gadhafi told the Arab "leaders," many of whom are on the American payroll, that their American masters would turn on them all, just as America turned on Saddam Hussein after using him to fight a proxy war against Iran.
Saddam had once been an ally of Washington, Gadhafi reminded the Arabs, "but they sold him out." Gadhafi told the American puppets, "Your turn is next."
Gadhafi asked, "Where is the Arabs' dignity, their future, their very existence?" If Arabs remain disunited, he predicted, "they will turn themselves into protectorates. They will be marginalized and turn into garbage dumps."
Indeed, it is this disunity that permits the US to bomb and murder at will in the Middle East.

What website did you pull this article off of? It seems racked with insecurities and conspiracy theories. "Evil Americans"? "Indiscriminate American violence"? Give me a break. There's two sides to every story... you apparently have only read the biased, anti-American side, and are sticking to every word of it like stink on shit.

PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS Is a conspiracy nut who still believes that the towers on 9/11 were blown up. Even the most whacked job out there has given up on that theory.
Evil America, Evil America, blah blah blah.
Always the same rhetorical spew.

As soon as the draft is initiated(and yes, yes it will be, because this war is never going to end, it will merely continue to escalate) I will be abandoning America and moving to another country. This war is not for america, it's for Iraq.

That explains everything. I've never even heard of Paul Craig Roberts before, but knowing this little tidbit of information has sufficiently cleared up any misconceptions I might have had about the origins of his article and personality.

If you live in the States, a nuclear Iran isn't going to pose a threat to you. If you are allies of America that happen to be in somewhat close proximity of Iran, it's a different ballgame. Would you prefer that Iran be allowed to build a nuke and then allow them to carry through on their threat to devastate Israel with a nuclear attack? Israel, as much as people seem to hate them, DO in fact have a right to exist just like everybody else. Iran wants to take that right from them. Where's the outrage in that?

LMAO! I can't believe there are still "so called journalists" that are on the Cheney invading Iran rant. I suppose, probably worth a couple of bucks for an obsolete article considering that these two are in their final months in office.

This ain't gonna happen. There's no TIME for Cheney and/or Bush to put together a war with Iran, even if they wanted to. Even in "Evil America" the president (or Vice President!) can't just order an invasion or bombing campaign of the scale you are talking about without making a case for it. Whether you agree with the reasons for the Iraq War or not, the adminstration did at least make a case for it and got the buy-in of the Senate. There were resolutions in the UN that proivded a pretext as well. Now it may have turned out that all those reasons were LIES, but at least there was an effort at selling a patina of legitimacy.
None of that groundwork has been done for Iran, and there isn't time to do it now. The election is in 7 months. I wouldn't put anything past Bush or Cheney, but I doubt even they would get us into a war with Iran right before leaving office. Unless it is part of the larger conspiracy to precipitate a worldwide crisis, suspend the Constitution, and install Cheney as President for Life of our new fascist nation... Hmmmm... Maybe there is something to this after all....

IF, notice i said, IF there was to be war they CAN suspend elections and keep the current gov't in power.

IF that were to happen, there'd be a war all right --- Civil War.
Note: I do not believe in this scenario at all, but if the government were to launch another ill-advised, unpopular war, without any public support or pretext, and then suspend elections because of the crisis, there would be a period of bloody chaos resulting in either a full dictatorship, or a bunch of fascists swinging from ropes.
-
A Third American War in the Making?
Another reason I do not believe in this scenario is that our military is stretched so thin already, I don't think we could sustain an effectiuve attack on Iran. Although, knowing this administration, they would probably estimate it to take only 10,000 special forces commandos, be over in 30 days, and be paid for with Iranian oil revenues. If Rummy were still around, it would be 100 troops, 5 days, and we'd be greeted by the Iranians with bouquets of flowers, handjobs for everyone, and free gas for life! How hard could it be? We've got 'em surrounded already, and we've got plenty of practice in Afghanistan and Iraq! Fuck, yeah! Wait a minute ... I was against this thing, right?

I don't think a war with Iran is in our imminent future, unless they slip up and really provoke an attack, but it's a country that you don't want to forget is there. As much hateful rhetoric that has come out of the top political figures there, it'd be nuts NOT to keep an eye on them and know what they're doing. Maybe sanctions and stern negotiations will make them straighten up and ditch their fanatical theocratic ways... but for some reason, I have my doubts.

Quarter Of Americans Now Think Iran is The Biggest Enemy
Consistent neocon propaganda campaign paying off
Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
A quarter of Americans believe that Iran now poses the biggest threat to the United States, confirming that a sustained neocon propaganda campaign to demonize Iran and its leaders for their own strategic benefit is having a significant impact.
According to a new poll by Gallup, Iran is top of the enemy list, with 25 percent, followed by Iraq at 22 percent, then China with 14 percent, and North Korea with 9 percent.
Republicans are more than twice as likely as Democrats to see Iran as the top U.S. enemy, while Democrats are likelier to name Iraq. Older people and those who say they closely follow world news are less likely to cite Iraq than the younger and less informed, reported the AP.
It was September last year when the New Yorker magazine reported that Barnett Rubin, a highly respected Afghanistan expert at New York University, asserted that Dick Cheney ordered top Neo-Con media outlets, including Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, to unleash a PR blitz to sell conflict with Iran.
The fruits of that propaganda campaign are now clear to see.
The outcome of the poll was no doubt spurred by assertions from figures within the Bush administration, the military and the intelligence community who have continued to suggest that Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons.
Only yesterday CIA Director Michael V. Hayden said that he believes Iran is still pursuing a nuclear bomb, even though the U.S. intelligence community, including his own agency, reached a consensus judgment last year that the Islamic Republic had halted its nuclear weapons work in 2003, after the U.S. invaded Iraq.
In spite of the report and the Iranians' continued denial of such a weapons program, the rhetoric from the neocons in the White House has continued.
"Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous, and Iran will be dangerous if they have the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon," President Bush said in a Dec. 4 news conference, shortly after the release of the national intelligence estimate.
In an interview with ABC News last week, Vice President Dick Cheney alleged that Iran was "heavily involved in trying to develop nuclear weapons enrichment, the enrichment of uranium to weapons-grade levels." despite the lack of any evidence whatsoever.
This consistent line from an administration led by those who are reportedly desperate to bomb Iran, along with the occasional misquote about wiping Israel off the map and a few manufactured provocations and skirmishes, has resulted in a sizeable chunk of the American population believing that we'd better deal with those darn Iranians quick smart.
Of course, a significant portion of Americans will seemingly believe anything.
It is telling that behind Iran, Iraq was named the next greatest enemy despite the fact that there was never any intelligence to confirm it had weapons of mass destruction, despite the fact that Saddam Hussein was overthrown in 2003 and despite the fact that the current Iraqi government is backed by the U.S.
The poll may have been more accurate had it been titled "Which country is the biggest threat to U.S. military industrial complex dominance over the entire region of the middle east?".
Or Perhaps, "which country most threatens the Western elite's stranglehold and manipulation of the production of oil and natural gas?"

Of course. There are Americans who honesty believe that Bush was responsible for 9/11, or played a major role in covering the tracks of those who were. Americans who believe that the Patriot Act was devised solely to spy on paranoid Democrats. Democrats who believe that we should pull every U.S. soldier out of whatever foreign country they're in, and have them here to watch out solely for their own (primarily those who are filthy rich and powerful). You're right, some Americans will believe anything they hear.
Iran should be watched, and you'd be a fool to believe that they only want to revamp their nuclear programs to provide energy. Until they can demonstrate that they aren't in favor of the annihilation of an entire religion, it would be prudent to at least keep close tabs on them and what they're doing with all that 'nuclear energy' they're wanting to make.

I'm not a democrat.
I'm a populist, or a constitutionalist or a constitutional conservative.
There's too much wrong at home for me to think I need to bomb some other country for what they're doing. I'm not threatened by them despite your desperate need for me to fear them as much as you.

Well i dont think Bush needs congressional approval before bombing Iran since the U.S has deemed part of Irans army a terrorist organization but i could be wrong.....Does anyone know??
-

No way could Bush do that.
Or anybody in the government without congressional approval.
Unless they did a maneuver like Clinton did to bomb kosovo, but that was with the United Nations. An orginazation I would like to see the USA get out of.

you know i totaly agree with this they should be watched. but it aint our job to police the world. it aint our job to make sure every one else in the world can sleep peacfuly at night, thats what we are supposed to have the UN for. and if the UN cant handle it mybe we should pull out of the UN and then see what they do when they need troops or money.
but basicaly it IS NOT our responisbility alone. why should we shoulder the burden

First of all... Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm
Secondly, I'd like to think that if we were to disable Iran's nuclear weapons program, we'd do it with full support from the UN. But other posters are partially right, we don't have the manpower to launch an all-out ground war in a country that size. At the moment, we're trying to handle these matters diplomatically... hopefully we'll make some progress there. The IAEA knows that Iran is acting shady in regards to the suspension of uranium enrichment, and sanctions have already been proposed.
??The international community has good reason to be concerned about Iran??s activities to acquire a nuclear weapons capability. At stake is the security of a vital region of the world and the credibility of the Security Council and the IAEA,? he said, adding that the US seeks to resolve the issue diplomatically.
Security Council receives additional reports on Iran sanctions
I agree that we shouldn't be forced to police the world, but I don't agree with sitting on our hands and patiently wait for them to carry through on their threats of attempting to destroy Israel. This world seems to be heading for even more tumultuous times in the years ahead, and I think it's about time for people to realize that it's not going to go away on its own. If we choose to do nothing, we'll powerless to stop anything.
-
A Third American War in the Making?
IF Iran were to be bombed it would start with Israel. The U.S. would have to jump through to many U.N. hoops in order to do this.....Israel would handle it in the same fashion as they did with Iraqs Nuclear power facility. Recently Syria too.
But of course some of these hack journalists will try to make you believe that the evil U.S. is picking on Iran....sells tapes, hats, vids, etc........

Let's ignore that the Anhtrax going around the U.S was from U.S stocks of the Ames strain. The media seems to have "forgotten" about that.
I don't think its even funny that most people are not aware of this.
In a previous life I was a Medical Microbiologist - I wrote my final year university paper on biological weapons. I never thought within 3 years of writing that paper that my predictions would come true, and that this material would fall into the "wrong" hands.
How it 'fell' there (and from how high up) we will likely never know. False flags ops are very real though and a valuable asset to the state.
