enough room for roots?

Hey guys I have a quick question about my future hydro setup. It is inside a computer shell, and i am going to use lowryder and LED lighting (see signature for more info). the roots are going to grow im a 2'' pvc pipe. the pump is the section with the cord (there is also going to be an aeration pump for the res, just not in the drawing:stoned:) should i use a basket with grow medium and let the roots freely grow in the pvc (meaning no pellets in the pvc) or should i have pellets in the entire tube for the roots. is that even enough room for lowryder roots? hope im making sense....:rasta:

the root area (in the last picture) begins all the way to the right to the cap and continues to the left up to the black line on the pvc (thats where the pump starts)

I've never grown lowryder but just looking at that I would say no, it's not enough room.

You think it's a good idea to have a reservoir above electrical equipment?

I don't...

why wouldn't it be? hopefully there will be enough cooling to keep the LEDs cool, so it wont heat up the res. just curious cause i dont see any potential problems but of course im a noob...:hippy:

im thinking about it and if the res if in a rubber container....i don't see any electrical interference, unless im using 30kV or something (which im not, nothing higher than 110V and 10A..)

doesn't matter the voltage...

and you're bound to have a minor amount of condensation or leakage through gaskets/tubing.

Any time i see electrical underneath a water source, no matter how small..i cringe as this is a potential hazard. You can't control everything that happens, especially in a smaller space.
I'd seriously reconsider putting the reservoir somewhere else if i were you.

I think Bob makes an excellent point.....at some point smething WILL leak.....water WILL spill.....get all your electrical stuff as far away as possible.

Ok how does this setup look? if i have it like this which hydro setup should i use? dwc, aeroponic, waterfall, ebbb&flw? whichever one is the best with the most advantages for the constricted space is the method i will use...you help is really appreciated!!!!:hippy:

Ok so im thinking wither ebb and flow or dwc. dwc sounds easier but also requires more maintenance (i could have a water valve open up and drain the bucket so i can refill..) than the ebb and flow. but im also looking for which system would grow faster and stronger plants (ive read thats where dwc comes in). i want a system that requires almost no cleaning/flushing (if possible). any ideas????:)

Go Aeroponic's in the PVC, on each side of the site, drill 5/16" hole, about 2 1/2" from center of site. Take the 1/4" tubing, put it through the hole you just drill'd, push it through so you can pull it through the site, srcew a mister on it, & pull the slack you pushed in back, so the mister is at the top of the tube, upside down.

It will be out of the way of the root development inside the tube. Take the other end of the 1/4" tubing to the feeder bar, & start setting up the next one.

As for the leak's, Yes plan ahead & don't run any electric where might develop a problem. And all together I have 34 Pod's running at all time's, 7-20gal. res. and have never had a major problem.

Use good material's, make good working design, and do a good job in construction!!!

hatch, how long do i spray the roots for? like 30 sec every half an hour? also does this setup look ok? does the return water need to be above the res? im assuming it does in the drawing.

No, I use the timer's with the 15-min. each on. And let it run for the 15-min every 4 to 5 hour's. The root's need time to dry out a little & get some air.

In any Hydro system you can still over water Plant's if you are'nt care-ful. & with you misting strait to the root's, your ppm or ec doesn't need to be very high. You can over nut them quick if it's to strong!!

I think I will have two lowryders in the system so how many jets do you think I should have? 1 spinner sprayer and 2 180deg sprayers? also how big does the container have to be for the roots? if im only growing two lowryders how large of a container should i have? should i have a separate reservoir or should i just have the pump in the root container (doesn't sound like a good idea to me but i'm sure you know). I know i am pretty much asking you to help me design the setup but you said you have 10+ years of experience in this and I want the best aeroponic setup i can make. Thanks alot!!!!!:rastasmoke:

The Sprayer

I like using the 16gal., More air space & root space, & also stay's cooler.

The spray'er's , 180d. around the outside, 360d. in center, I like to come from all direction's.

If You have 2-Plant's in 1-Pod, That's 7-mister's, You need a 290GPH Pump, Every Pod You add, add 290GPH to Your Pump size.

I dont like haveing water in the Pod's, If that's the way You have to run Your's, Well that how it will have to be, Make sure you have alot of oxygen in You water!!! The reason I don't do this are, 1st I don't like My Root's submerged in water, Ilike them to soak up as much fresh-air they can. 2nd I don't have to disturb the pod's, except a peak to make sure the mister's are doing the job. & The res is seperate & I can deal with it from under-neith.

As far as the PPm, What ever Nut program you go with, I use GHP Nut's, Go by the chart's the company suggest for what ever stage.

ok awesome. bought all 6 fox farm nutes and a 140 mesh in line filter. now i have new dimensions for my grow area, so i have to redesign. my space is alot bigger (19"Hx8.25"Wx22.5"D) so i have alot more room for a res and the root container. is 5" deep for root growth? i have 17" tall for growing height plus the height of the root container. the plants will prolly grow shorter than 12" so we can have the root container deeper if needed. i want to have 10 or more plants in the grow area, which is 16"x8.25". and how would you suggest placing the pods? can they be staggered? or should they be in rows of 2? i am using 3" net pots. i also have a 500gph pump to accommodate the extra sprayers.

also does it matter the type of container i use?

Anything but Clear. The root's need to be in a dark space. Clear will also cause Algae.

ok im thinking a 5" tall by 16" long by 8" wide root box. i think that should be plenty to accommodate the roots. that should give me room for 10 plants...i think. 2 rows or 5. maybe i can squeeze a couple more in. ill see when i build it. i just hope 5" is deep enough for the roots.
