Obama to deliver speech on race, outspoken preacher
Faced with what his advisers acknowledged was a major test for his candidacy, Sen. Barack Obama sought Monday to contain the damage from incendiary comments made by his pastor and prepared to address the issue of race more directly than at any other moment of his presidential campaign.
Though he has faced questions about controversial statements by the pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, for more than a year, Obama is enduring intense new scrutiny now over Wright's characterizations of the United States as fundamentally racist and the government as corrupt and murderous.
Obama, in a speech today in Philadelphia, will repeat his denunciations of the minister's words, aides said. But they said he also would use the opportunity to open a broader discussion of race, which throughout the course of his presidential campaign he has sought to transcend. He will bluntly address racial divisions, one aide said, talking about the way they play out in church, in the campaign, and beyond.
Monday evening, Obama continued to write the speech, which he believes could be one of the most important of his candidacy, aides said.
Obama said that in his speech, to be given at the National Constitution Center, he would "talk a little bit about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church community, for example, which I think views this very differently."

How the hell do they view it differently? "The government created HIV to kill off people of color"......"The US of KKKA"....get this sucker a shovel cause it sounds like he's going to bury his candidacy today.
Have a good one!:s4:

"The Rev. Wright is family that he won't disown. Blah, blah, blah the plight against the blacks."....defend the s.o.b., he either lost to Clinton with this speech or to McCain in the general election.
BANG, BANG.......the Dems shoot themselves in the foot AGAIN!

Seemed lacking in the content that would put this to rest. Was really impressed how broadcast tv decided not to cover the speech. Guess then they would have to give the other candidates equal time, as it sounded like nothing more than a greasy campaign speech.
I believe Obama's campaign has done more to subvert Martin Luther King's progress, than any other modern-day politician.
Quite the uniter, indeed.
Being stuck in the 60's has jaded the message he (the rev) had supposed was relevent, but the congregation eats it up? Where are the checks-and-balances?
I owe the black community nothing, and am getting fairly impatient with those that attempt to tell me otherwise. Fucking get over it and take some responsibility for your own destiny. Slavery still exists here in the US, but it's the children of the black churches like the Trinity United Church of Christ being held slave by the elders' indoctrination into the 'poor black man held back by whitey and US policy' syndrome.
But it's a black thing, not understood by whites.
Is it me, or was this the jest of the speech?
I wonder how long till we see the tv ad's with all this content that has been kept off of the broadcast airwaves thusfar? I heard on Fox News up to 40% of folks polled haven't even heard of this story.

The government didn't give AIDS to black people, but there is overwhelming evidence suggesting that AIDS started when US doctors(funded by the government) gave infected experimental polio vaccine to africans living in small villages. They didn't know the HIV was in the vaccine(made from monkey parts), but yes, they are the ones that gave it to the black community. The medical community obviously denies this ever happening, considering the fallout that would happen I can understand why they would. There's lots of books and documentary's about this, The Origin Of Aids is probably the most famous.
I am in no way condoning the statements made by the preacher, just saying there are accepted historical theories that are related to his idea.

I'd love to have either Clinton or McCain in the same situation with some well known KKK advocate for a preacher. Does ANYONE think that this same speech would be accepted as an excuse? "Just a crazy ol' uncle with views from a different era?.........yeah right! Like that would fly!!
He openly admitted sitting in the Church while Wright was making controversial statements....probably WITH his kids!! Do ya think that he sat down with his children afterwords and said "that's just your crazy ol' uncle...don't listen to him"?
Obama managed to split the Dem party between black and white......good for him!

and this is the reason the black community has turned against bill cosby and turned against malcom X. remember it wasnt a white racist that shot malcom X but a black man
p.s. i am a liberal hippie and am by no means a racist bigot them people make me sick. but i do beleive in judging a man (or woman)by his actions and not the colour of his skin, sexual orientation, or religion

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."
ABC News: Obama: Fire Imus
Maybe not working on his staff but teaching his children in a place of worship must be a different issue to Obama. :wtf:
Now what's the difference between Rev. Wright and Imus that might sway his opinion? Wright spreads hate in a church while Imus cracks jokes on the radio. Wright is black while Imus is white. Pick your choice......

I don't know...I could see Imus, there at the pulpit...
Has been entertaining watching the dems scramble the past few days. Seems the memo said to minimize, distract, and my favorite: "move on".
Heard a few senators, democratic strategists and clergy use that very term this weekend.
"Move on". How the hell are we supposed to move on? The 'best' black candidate in years, and ends-up he's belonged to a black seperatist church for two decades, is forced to uninvite his antipastor to his coming-out invocation, lies about never hearing the good rev spout his nastiness from the pulpit, came out minimizing his role in the Rezco partnership, and then...since he had already blamed friends, enemies and society for his current situation...throws his own grandma under the bus, labeling her a biggot. (can't forget the shout-out to family)
Nice speech, but who vetted him for his current gig as senator?.
You'd think someone would have told him: "if you are going to put your black ass out there on the campaign trail, better make sure it's squeeky fricking clean"
Kinda hard to "move on", when your feet are firmly implanted in festering the rhetoric of past injustices.
Real hard to believe he actually earned his degree. I thought learned folks were smart. I guess it's not that he's a bit careless, and lacking in judgement that pisses me off, it's that he thinks that we are, too..

Well, I take it we either have NO Obama supporters in here or they have cut and run on their candidate. The GOP was hoping Clinton was the candidate...now it's Obama.:D

I didn't get a chance to see the speech or read any commentary about it, but when I do I'll post back.

Huckabee is defending Rev. Wright.

Kinda weird he's doing that, but I definitely agree with his Jerry Falwell statement.

Here is the full speech in four parts. It takes awhile to get through the whole thing, but if you are going to comment, be sure to watch it all, not just the sound bite snippets that are out there --- you get a distorted view of the message with the selective editing

I thought it was pretty good. I thought it was going to be more about Wright, but it was more about race in America. You don't get anyone talking about the more subtle aspects of race in America. Usually all you get are stereotypes and resentment from both sides and racial pandering from the politicians.
I thought it was interesting that he said you have to acknowledge the anger and resentment of BOTH black and white Americans regarding racism. How often do you get someone acknowleding the anger of BOTH sides? For you "angry white men" who have already posted, did you notice that he recognized the resentment some white people feel over what they see as their own lost opportunites resulting from things like affirmative action? Anger over losing a job or losing a spot in college to someone who gets preference based on race? Not really something you would expect from the guy you have stereotyped as supporting the kind of things Wright says, is it?
I think he was right on with this. If you don't at least try to understand where the anger from someone like Wright comes from or the resentment of white people, you'll never be able to deal with it. Personally, I can't stand the victim mentality of blacks who blame racism for all their problems or the whites who blame affirmative action or immigrants for all of their problems. Put some effort in to making the most of your opportunites and you will be fine.
And I agree with him on the fact that if maybe we ALL had decent schools and maybe we ALL had a shot at some good jobs, then we wouldn't be left fighting over the scraps and resenting what another person got at our expense. Life does not have to be a zero-sum game where every gained opportunity comes at the expense of someone else.
