TIME. What happens if...

Professor Ronald Mallett thinks he can build a time machine this century using light. Information from the future could be sent back to when the machine is turned on.

What happens if in the future you don't sent back the information that you received when you turned the machine on from the future?

So say I switch on the machine and a message saying "Hello from 2009!" appears but when we get to 2009 we don't send that particular message back. This is some kind of paradox or is there a simple answer? :wtf:

I had a similar idea :jointsmile:

It made me think also of who would own the time machine. Knowing the future is a very powerful thing.

I think that by altering things in the past, we switch over to a different parrallel universe. Like jumping to a different 5th dimentional course.

The universe is constantly "splitting" into every possible outcome for every possible decision and every possible random occurence. There are infinite numbers of parallel universes created every instant. In one parallel universe the information is sent back, and in another it isn't. Because they both exist, no paradox is created --- each timeline is internally consistent.

Reading this thread is just like watching Back To the Future.

Well... its called the "many world interpretation" of quantum mechanics... but i think the ones who created this theory were a bit wrong. I wouldnt say the universe "branches", or "splits" every time a decision is taken. I would say always there were, there is, and always there will be all the possible universes with all the possible outcomes.
When a decision is taken, the univesre does not branch itself in two, one for each choice. Both universes, one for each choice, are already there. When we make a choice, we just choose what universe (from the two possible) we will percieve, and what universe we will ignore.
Usually our mind only can "understand" one universe at time, and thats why we think we did a choice. All the unending possibilities are there, but we only can percieve one of them at time.

I dont think the potential of the universe really matters. Every decision made by every person on this earth is just a small portion of the make up. While we sit searching for the answers of why we're here, we easily forget that it doesn't matter because we ourselves are equally a part of it, just as the aliens 1000 billion light years away on the planet ringworm are a part of it too. A decision is just as affective as a rock at the bottom of an ocean.

nah everything I just wrote happened in present time...we will never escape the present moment.

There are theories that say "aliens" that have been visiting us, are actually extremely advanced us from the future.



Time Travel is an interesting concept. Basically because "Time" is a made up concept. It was created for organization purposes. Think about it, if you were out in the woods, living, you wouldn't really need "time". All you know is Daylight and Night.

Indeed... If we hadnt memory or imagination, time would be a meaningless concept, and we only would be aware of the present... cause without memory we wouldnt remember the past, and without imagination we wouldnt imagine the future.

I wonder what the first message will be that comes through... maybe the plans for a much better time machine?

and if it were to get in the wrong hands... imagine terrorists sending nanobots back into the past to do, well, whatever they want to us.

The time machine, it seems, will only be able to go forward, using the speed of light to beat us there. But would the return require going BACK in Time? Because of the linear nature of time, where we always move forward, we can only know the present and past. I don't really know why light would solve the issue, however. In my very ltd. understanding of Relativity and space/time, one could go back in time by applying enough force to cause it to reverse direction- though the entire universe would have to get dragged along as time "deflates". So it may be possible to travel back in time; the real impossibility is mustering the amount of force needed to pull it off.
As for the future, well, there's already light all over the universe, and it has been there since the first stars ignited, (6,000 yrs ago?). None of it is from the future, however, as we can only see light from events in the past. Again, light is part of our relative universe, and I would doubt that one could coax the photons to "get to" the future and wait there, simply because the future doesn't exist yet- there's nowhere to "get" to.

the future from which we send information may not land in our particular part of that future's past, the past already exists for us, we cannot change it, but we can create alternate pasts that never lead to where WE are.


sending information into the past will either reach our past, or it will create an alternate past that adds to the infinite branches of the tree of infinity.

what we need, is not a time machine, but a quantum travel device.

I like to believe in the infinite universes where all the infinite possibilities will happen... which is already a paradox of sorts since this reality/universe would be but a fraction of infinity - that would be impossible since infinity can not be split into fractions, yet infinite possibilities gives the chance for such a thing to occur... a paradox. There are no points, no measurements, infinity is nothing, yet everything. Insane asylum, here I come!

Also, with our limited view of infinite possibilities there exists our good friend called Nothingness ;) There'd be only a single chance for nothingness, since there can't be any other way to define it, let alone trying to define it in the first place.... Infinite chances for nothingness... paradox. If nothingness were to "exist" it would consume everything and there'd be only nothingness.

hey, shadow wolf, I love reading your posts on such things... it helps strengthen my maddening/futile quest for understanding everything and nothing.

If we are really here living only in what we call the present, and time is not linear, then there's no way to physically move through time... it'd be somehow dependent on replicating or changing the exact conditions of all matter and energy in the known universe to the exact state of being of when you want to be. Someone mentioned this, and also the possibility of only changing all the matter and energy within yourself and you'd be instantly put into the universe a the point at which your targeted matter/energy configuration was meant to exist in. I'm gonna stop now and finish taking my non-cannabis herbal placebo supplements.

try not to stress nothing and infinity... they are the same thing from opposite points of view.

infinite nothingness is our state of being, and understanding it is the bane of our existence, as well as it is futile. living with it, keeping it company, BEing it is the closest chance at understanding it we really have.

If there is a will, there is a way, and we are all willing to seek out understanding in the universe, so therefore we ARE seeking out, trying to touch the stars.

time paradoxes are crazy, one of the most fascinating things i think are different planes of existence. like if someone goes back in time one day earlier, and sees themselve, then there would have to be two separate planes of existence for the single person, and if there were two planes then why not three, or four, it would have to be infinite.

I think that Einstien said that time travel was impossible due to the nature of the space-time continuem. One cannot exist in two places at the same time.

A nice idea, but (at the moment, at least) fundamentally impossbile.

But I agree, knowing the future would be a thing that our feeble minds would be nigh on impossle to comprehend.

Last I knew, the universe is 13.7 billion years old give or take a couple hundred million years, and is like 150 billion light years across (yeah I don't know how that works either but that's what I heard, there are literally places too far away to ever reach even at the speed of light since it is moving away from us).

Earth is 4.3 billion years old I heard, but maybe it is 4.5 not sure. The sun is about 5 billion years old and half way through its life. As it ages it has been and will get hotter, in a couple hundred million years life will no longer be possible. And if we survive that we have to worry about the merger with the Andromeda Galaxy. Of course gamma ray bursts, ice ages, comet or asteroid strikes, stars or a black hole passing through our solar system could all finish us of in a few thousand or hundred thousand years or tommorrow, the chance is better than winning the lotto or being struck by lightning. So enjoy life and worry about today because there may not be a tommorrow. peace

einstein's physics aren't the end all be all. one day someone will correct his yet unknown mistakes and take this reality in a new direction, and then that set of physics will one day be transcended as long as humanity continues. that is my opinion anyway.

you also have to remember that "time" is relative from person to person

if you happened to be standing on a planet 100 light years away and stared at earth through a telescope, you would be seeing earth 100 years ago in earth years but present on the outside planet
