TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Welcome to my new log.
In this log I'm going to follow 2 grows, one very simple and a new grow doing something I haven't tried before. This time I'm going to try and go for the biggest plants I can get....and a record yield as well. :stoned:
I'll be using buckets like the one below to flower the plants with. I have two of them and each one will hold about 6-7 gallons of water (when half full which is how they will be used) in a DWC/drip ring setup that hopefully will have enough room to allow some good size to the plants I'll be growing.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
There are a couple reasons I have not gone to bigger buckets for growing but the main one is because I really did NOT want a bunch of five gallon (or in this case....15 gallon) buckets sitting all over our teeny little house. We really just don't have the room for it. So I wanted a setup that I could start small and then transfer to something larger with minimal problem and stress to the plant at some point when needed during flowering. These plants start as a seed. They DON'T need seven gallons of water from the get go so I really didn't want to have to start them that way and waste large amounts of water and nutes.
The answer (we HOPE) seems to be the 8 inch net pot bucket lids. They fit nicely into the tan w/f buckets with enough extra room inside on all sides for the roots to grow down the sides of the net pot versus having to grow through the bottom of bucket only.

OOH... I was wanting to build something similar to this a little while back, but lost a lot of my steam because I'm such a noob at hydro. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this thread. Thanks for inspiring my lazy ass!

I have a feeling his will be a good one...I'm really interested if you can grow monsters like Crispy did whit this cool equipment...
These buckets are huge, and whit that 1000w hps i believe you will set up a new record.....
Well, good luck WH...I'll be watching.....

Thanks you guys I really appreciate you stopping by. Mr C....if you want to play with some hydro I'd be glad to help. :)
Zeb...I sure hope you are right.....I'm not at all sure I'll match Master Crispi.. :D but I AM going to make a play for it. ;)

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Once they do get some size they'll go (still into their net pots) into one of the large 15 gal buckets. Originally I wanted to cut a hole in the middle-ish for the net pots but the acrylic we bought was 1/4 inch thick (we wanted sturdy and it actually took Mr Hound and a standard circular saw to cut so we improvised. But it IS sturdy.
There are two ten inch airstones in each bucket (which I may trade out for bubble wands....I'm still on the fence about them but Opie and MVP both suggested them) if I'm not happy with the way they work. And a little side slot on each tub to check ph, add nutes or whatever without having to lift the plant out of the bucket.
The pump has six airlines which is enough to power both tubs and their accessories.

Ah, thank you very much Milady Weedhound... and you're already helping me out a ton by making this log.
I'll absorb as much as possible here and in the deep dark recesses of the Hydro forum before I ask too many questions. I see this log quickly becoming quite dear to me!

Stealth....good to see you (two :D) The seedlings will be going into the small setup today so there won't be anything really exciting for awhile yet.
My personal best yield at this point is 9.3 oz/plant. X-Crispis is 19 oz off one plant in his five gallon buckets. Now I don't know about 19 ozs but I'm going to aim for close to a pound off one plant. We shall see how close I can get. ;)

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
holy shit!!! my best is 4oz... but thats because i used to use the lollypop method. loved how your looked though, exspecially the church..lol, take a look in my thread, you inspired me on a few of my plants...lol

So WH, are you gonna get yerself a WoodMizer to make full use of the lumber you're growin' there? :D
I'm definitely watching in anticipation...

What do you think Stinky? (pssst...ones going to be a Power Plant....) will they grow a pound?
Thanks very much for the clone info.....Mr Hound is out right now getting dip n grow AND rooting powder......;)
Stealth I DO stop by and look at your log. I freely admit I don't understand the entire light thing....but I know some happy healthy plants when I see them.

I hope you catch a big one. Good luck.

Thanks much Opie....I'm hoping you hit your magic number (in cooking :D) as well. ;)

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Ok, ok nobody's saying they're quite ready for the 7 gal DWC tub yet.. :wtf:
Someday (hopefully) we'll all look back and smile and nod over how small they once were.
First one is the Power Plant. Second...Brainstorm (NL#5 x Haze) which is supposed to be one of the highest yielding feminized strains and take between 7-9 weeks to finish if I remember correctly.
Last is all 4.....Nexus (rear left), Master Kush (from KUSHETTE ) age approx 2 weeks and the infants in the net pots.
PS....Clones are looking VERY good today......so far I like this RR method.

Uh, you're not disappointed are you? Don't they all pretty much start out small?

Mrs. Hound-
Pardon my noobishness, but what sort of nutrients are you using for these seedlings? I'm assuming that even such young seedlings would need some amount of nutrients with their water in order to thrive... or am I totally wrong about that?

That little hinge you have on the bucket lid is pretty cool.

This sounds like a fun grow, big as ya can grow.
I'm psyched to see things take off.

So I was noticing that my Dutch Dragon was starting to get that telltale "k def" thing going that is always a sign that I need to flush the plant. So I gathered up a bunch of ph'd water and poured it through. The CRUD I got out was REALLY TERRIBLE....I don't think we need to see a photo of it but it was scarily similar to what I got from flushing my Power Plant despite the fact that this plant shows no signs of illness besides the k def on the older leaves.
Given THAT input it occurred to me that we COULD put that stupid red bucket inside one of the tubs (I love the fact that this NEVER occurred to me the entire time we were making these things.....just yesterday.:wtf:) but long story short....in went the Dutch Dragon and she's already loving it. I think she's put on a few inches in the last 24 hour already. She also sucked up close to a gallon of solution in the same time period.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Hi Shov and Orzy...welcome to the log.
The plant in here now isn't going to be my big yielders.....she's more of a "practice" grow for the new tubs. ;)

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Mr C right now they are on plain RO water with a drop (literally...drop) per 2 gals of water. There are alot of schools of thought on feeding seedlings but I've had good luck with my feeding sched......I'll post a link to it.....brb.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
A redwood tree, lol. This sounds great, do you plan on topping or training at all? How long do you veg a plant that you want to get those results from?
Great log!!
Good luck
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Well sublime I'm not honestly sure yet. I do plan on topping at least once and I was thinking of vegging along the line of six weeks. My last few grows I vegged for five weeks and have run into rootbound issues (the Dutch Dragon is an example of that) so I'm sort of playing it by ear here...:)
This is also the first grow that I'm trying the 8 inch net pots vs my old red w/f buckets so there's a lot of new stuff I'm trying here that I'm not real sure about.
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
I'll be watchin in anticipation thats for sure. The power plant, is it from dutch passion?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
The breeder did not specify so I'm honestly not sure. I don't use my seeds for breeding....only to grow and toke so I'm not very careful about the background of them as long as the plant/smoke does what it is supposed to do.
I grew....or should say TRIED to grow a PP in my last grow and the thing grew so fast and strong it became rootbound only 4-ish weeks in and then developed some root mold or fungus so I had to "euthanize" her. :( I HAVE had rootbound issues in the past.....part of why I created these larger buckets......but that's the only plant I've actually LOST in hydro since I started growing. So I'm VERY anxious to try this power plant in a big enough setup.;)
Interestingly I've already had my first faux pas with this grow. I accidently watered them with some water that was 7.2 or something in ph.....not even sure how I accomplished that but I did. The power plant's leaves turned down for a day or so then bounced back. The Brainstom never even noticed and so far is blowing the power plant out of the water (no pun intended :D) in growth! Go figure!!

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
I am jealous, I have heard so many good things about pp. I had vegged one out with a blueberry on my last grow but the blueberry turned out to be a cabinet hog and didnt leave any room for any other plants so I gave the pp the hack:( Mine also grew extremely well, it was a short stout little bush. I am looking to get into hydro so this is going to be a great log for me to learn from and get alot of tips im sure.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Just a few quick photos of her. She's doing very well and has definitely picked up since going into the larger bucket. This has pretty much been my "oh well" plant.....took some clones from her, more pruning then I like to do on a flowering plant etc etc....and she's still chugging along very nicely in spite of all of it.

hopefully the weather will work for me. so lemmie get one thing straight! if a take a vegged plant from24/0 light(its been vegging for oh lets say 2 or so months) an put it outside. will that make it flower or will it keep vegging? and also does an outdoor plant have to be under the sun always(i mean does it have to be sticking out in the open or under some shrubs so nosey pricks dont nab it)! :rastasmoke:
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Anything over 14-ish hours of light will cause the plant to stay in veg stage.....less (approximately) will flower the plant. Its way too cold at night for them too be outdoors anyway this time of year. More like around May.

colorado grows during may? :rastasmoke:

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
ha ha I'm in california...I wouldnt put a plant out until May.....Is colorado warmer than the foothills around Tahoe?
It depends on your lighting.....if your plant is outside and there is more than 15 hours of light in a day (some people say 16, some say 14) it will keep vegging. If there are LESS light hours the plant will flower. It doesnt matter how many weeks its been in veg or inside or outside or whatever.....the only thing that matters to the plant is how much light it is getting daily. If you keep changing it around.....18/6 then less, then more,, it may very well hermie due to stress.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
So I've counted and double counted.....Today is Day 50 Flower and I took off a few over-crowded underveloped buds and we checked the trichs on them. To our great surprise they are abut 5% amber already on all the buds. I'm pretty surprised since I read this plant is a nine to ten week finisher.
Sooooo we put her on plain water.....the stuff on top seems pretty done (I like about 20% amber by finish) and we are starting to flush but kind of a lazy one since i'm still sort of shocked at the quick time.
We're going to try something a little different with this plant....since it's my "oh well" plant anyway. (PS...Check my C crowd log to see her CLONE!!.....my first EVER!) We're going to harvest 1/2 the plant and give the half underneath another few days-ish to develop a little more with better light. I wish I had done this with my Cotton Candy mix which seemed to be along the same line.....very done on top but underlit on the bottom...so I want to try it this time.
