G'day,
I've almost finished setting up my 1st hydro system and in the meantime, I've been growing this little one for approx 3 weeks now, stressing it once (Soften & Bend technique) approx 4 days after transplanting - I think it's looking pretty happy in there atm...
What do others think please, any opinion and constructive crits are more than welcome - cheers!

After doing my research on the types of systems I could build for myself, here is a few JPEG's of the system I just took for you mate.
I built it btw, had fun researching and then putting the knowledge together via the hands - was fun indeed...
I'm using two types of medium: Coco Coir and Expanded Clay - I have a brick of Coco Coir that I transplanted into, placed it approx 1/3 from the top and then surrounded it with expanded clay balls. I also have two full length (Length of top tank) strips (Approx 30cm wide) of rockwool covering the flow holes (x3 either side) at the bottom (Along the side) of the top tank...
Hydroponics (The way I plan on doing it - twirls hands) is going to be a lot of fun I think - grin...

Do you have any source of aeration in the reservoir to make up for the time that the res sits 'still' when the pump is not running?
How did you decide on the watering schedule since you are running 2 media simultaneously that have very different water-retention properties?

I have an air stone in the reservoir, running 24/7
I decided on the two mediums for various reasons, I felt I needed an initial strong base (Coco Coir) due to what I plan on doing with the plant and a medium (Expanded Clay Balls) that would keep light from the rooting area and was also easy to move around or manipulate.
I chose the 15 on/off cycle of water flow through observation. I can generate a lot of heat with x2 600 watts (x2 MH during grow & x2 HPS during flower, is what I will be using), I was initially ( 1 week into grow) seeing a dry-out kind of look with the plant when I was running it at 15 on / 45 off and also at 30 on / off cycles, on the 15 on/off cycle, I am not seeing the dry-out look of the plant when thirsty so-to-speak... grin!
I will probably switch to a constant flow of water (During lights on) when the root mass has flourished nicely through all the expanded clay balls, as I will not need to worry as much (I hope) with what roots are left on the Coco Coir...
What is it like running a constant water fall system stinkyattic?
As mentioned above, I plan on switching to a constant flow myself.
Can I jump up and dopwn with you soon - grin, as I will be on board with you later in my grow stage...

That sounds very cool. So you just have the coco in there for a preliminary substrate. That makes sense. I was using rapid rooters as mine.
I found the airstone became unnecessary with constant flow.

I also have a clone, sitting in Aminozym and B52 - It's tiny, (Approx 3.5cm high) as I wanted to experiment with the size/s of clones I could create. I am surprised (1 of 2 cloned), I thought it would've died long ago, it's approx 2 weeks old now and has developed roots - how cool... Well it might not be, but it is my first attempt - woot :)
I'm just having for few quiet pipes atm, all in bed, up by myself and I don't start work till 2:30pm 2moro - cool...
I'm just smiling, this is going to be a load of fun, just hope the success stories are paramount and plentiful.........yummy!

Here's one of the system (the plants look like shit because the temps are super low at night, in the 50s, and I wasn't changing the res often enough, meaning I got wicked salt buildup):

Hey buddy, I have a suggestions that might assist with the temps at night, If you have air flow (Fan forced) through room from outside - introduce Co2 (See attached pic)
I'm experimenting with additional Co2 in my room, I went to the local brewing shop, bought the smallest fermenter (15ltr / 3.9 Gallons), bought sugar (4KG Turbo Sugar), yeast (10grams Wine yeast) and the other attachments you see in the pic, added approx 13ltrs (3.4 Gallons) of water, mixed ingredients, attached a tube from the regulator and into the back of the fan...
It seems to be doing nicely, plants are looking very "Perky - Happy" and I'm getting constant "Pops" (Indication of fermentation process) every 1-2 seconds, it's been in there for the last 3 days, I will note how long the fermentation process will last (Before it slows down, the pops) with those ingredients mentioned above...
Anyways, back to the suggestion - Introduce x2 of the fermenters I have in my room. That way you can lessen the cold air intake during the night (Switch off air intake fan/s) by not having to worry about fresh air for the Co2. Who knows? I'm in my infancy regarding research into Hydroponics... Self educated opinion - grin!
Can you have too much Co2? Will go looked that up again, for memory - you can never have too much, the plant will only use what it can.

CO2 boosting helps when your temps are too HIGH because the plants transpire faster. The issue is simply that cold reservoirs make the selective ion passage across the root membrane all fuckulated and nute/water uptake is impacted.
My 'intake' is all the gaps and cracks in a 110 year old Victorian in a windy area. But I no longer inhabit that grow space so it's all moot, lol.

I guessing you have a water heater in your reservoir? If not, this would greatly help...
Ahh, I remember the other query - You mentioned salt build-up, I'm aware of this and have yet to get back to researching it, so may I just ask you? - grin
When are you (Not you personally - hehe) at risk (In Average environments) of salt build-up, before you MUST flush and cause root damage etc?
I flush my 20ltr system every 5-8 days atm, just guessing with limited knowledge. I am waiting for my TDS meter to arrive, from your part of the world :) so I can get a good indication regarding nutrient levels in the reservoir etc...

Nae, no heater- the waterfall action keeps res temps at ambient air temp, and the pump warms the water. Don't fret over my old system, it was experimental and its major failing was the crappy grow room I used to inhabit. Had air temps been under control (ie, not in a drafty pathetic attic), it would have been more predictable.
You risk salt problems in a soil environement when you use chemical ferts and don't water heavily enough.
In a hydro environment, it's an issue of finding the balance between adding WATER and adding FERTILIZER to the res between complete res changes. If you are not running your system with an EC meter, you are flying blind and in danger of getting the balance wrong. I wish I'd taken some pics of the scale all over my system before I cleaned it off, lol... I was running tap water with NO EC meter hahaha!
Anyone growing hydro seriously will check the conductivity of the solution before adding anything to the res, every time.
Ahh yeah, sounds as though ya had a bad environ, but the added info is nice...
Am I lucky then in relation to the reservoir, I change/flush my system when water gets low, I have yet to top-up my reservoir, felt this wouldn't be a preferd option if it could be avoided - Not %100 sure of my reasoning yet - grin...
EG: I changed/flushed the system on Sunday night, tis now Thursday morning (7:30am), reservoir is at approx 65% capacity and pump is still well submerged but, I will be doing a change/flush today before I head off to work anyway - I think it would be better for me to monitor TDS, what do you think?
Though I'm starting to read about beneficial bacteria that can build up in the grow medium, is this not a bother if you are constantly feeding/introducing the desired nutrients, vitamins, enzymes etc... etc... etc..?

I've just received my TDS meter in the mail and COOL and WOW! As my 6 day old nute solution is at 1800ppm's ouchy for this little guy - grin... Doing something about it now - back soon...

As you can see in the previous post, the pic shows that the rear of the plant is not as "bushy" as the front.
So I've decided to apply the "FIM" technique - like topping the plant, accept you only cut 75% of the top and not 100% (Apparently - hehe)...
Here's some progressive pics for all to have a look - going ok I think?

pic3: Day2 - as you can see clear growth in the "FIM'd" area

Looking pretty good I think, lets just see how many tops come from applying the "FIM" technique...

Looks like you are on your way.
A word of advice with a spray system like that; do what you can to prevent the spray from actually hitting the lower leaves. What you will find is actually called 'reverse foliar feeding', where you can accidentally leach nutrients out of the low leaves by running water over them. Then you will wonder what your deficiency/lockout is, but it's just overspray. I see the signs that you have something like that going on to some extent.
In other news, I got my vertical NFT system cleaned up and assembled, and got a bunch of nice pics of it to show you, with no plants so you can see the basic structure, and then... lost my camera cable!!! oops!
(In on or two of the pic, the pic was taken not long after I had sprayed them with distilled water...)
That was one of my first things on the list when I turned the squirters up (On top of hose, no longer below the hose), making sure they were not squirting any part of the plant, including stem. Not sure if you can see in the pic I provided, but I build little pockets for the water to spirt into and build the area up with more expanded clay balls, to stop splashing up into the plant etc...

I'm going to stupid BestBuy after work for a cam cable. I can't stand those big box stores... they make my anxiety act up REALLY bad... but dammit, the consumer culture dictates that I must buy my electronics from a giant nationwide retailer... so I'll just be sure to smoke before I go, lol!

I am almost finished setting up the room, just need the exhaust (Inline Fan) fan, white wall (Have a roll of it - matt white) and my x4 small HPS (Not sure the wattage, will research etc) as side/front/rear lights on telescopic stands, so as I can move them up and down with the plants growth etc... The planks of wood (Liquid Nailed) around the walls, are for the white wall - staple gun it to the wood, should be easy enough, just waiting until I install the fan, so I can hide the cord/s behind the white wall...
Can't wait until I see the final package - twirls hands
I have a 6" inline (Mixed Flow) fan in the mail, should arrive this week, then down to the store and grab all the necessary joiners etc for the duct work etc...
Hardest part of the room setup was: Those two fooking bricks (Single bricks) I had to remove from wall, for the air intake and exhaust...
Should be complete in approx 4-6 weeks

IT looks sweet so far- are you using board or plastic sheeting for the walls? Do you have something to lift the res off the cement floor in case of chill? And I always recommend to people- ESPECIALLY hydro growers- that the ballasts and all electrical components be set up at least a foot off the floor in case of flooding. Even growing in the attic I've always been neurotic about preventing damage to the ballasts, or even fire, from a spill.

- I have several rolls of flat white (Matt finish, thin Vinyl type) sheeting, just waiting for me to put it up. Just waiting until I install my exhaust system and vacate the room of everything for a day
- I have a sheet of insulation felt underneath my res
- Great advice about the electrics Stinkyattic, am aware of such but, it's just convenient to have them there for now until I design something to house them in/on etc.
I like the fact you can see a change every day with the plant, tis cool...

Once you get the top out of range of the sprayers, stop removing lower leaves. I see why you've done it up to that point, and agree that it was a good call to improve air flow and access around the base of the plant.
If you want, I can move this thread into the grow logs since it's kinda heading that way! :D

The art of Bonsai has been a passion of mine long ago, though I've yet to study the subject. Hydroponics is the environment I would like to experiment in with bonsais.
This plant has been a perfect learning tool to date, it is such a hardy plant...And fun!
If you think this thread should be moved to the "Grow Logs" threads, then letā??s move the little fella there - smile! But, I am just learning the "Basic Growing" atm, I just like to refine the basics - grin...
