I migrated here from a different forum....I learned about using a proxy from guys at the other forum...By the time the discussion was over, I was convinced that I had left a blazing Internet trail right to my front door.....so I used a proxy to get a new e-mail address and to register here....I feel better!!!!! MY first post of many....Damm...startin off at zero posts again!!!:D

can you please explain this proxy buisness and what exactly they find to track you down.
Baisically: Whenever you do something on the internet, you are identified by your ip address. With a court order your ISP has to give out your personal information based on an IP address. Cannabis.com stores your IP address (as does every other forum). If the FBI/CIA/DEA/other fascist organizations were to get a court order against you you're screwed.
But, with a proxy server: The proxy acts as a messenger for you, relaying all the information, and the only IP address cannabis.com or anyone sees is the proxy server's IP address. So even with a court order they're stuck, cuz they can't track you. All they know about you is what proxy server you use.
It probably is a good idea to use a proxy if you grow.
proxy is for example getting A hotmail addy or yahoo, other than your ISP?

Using public proxies is a useless way of doing this, and provide little to no protection.
If you do not want to spend money on keeping yourself safe then sacrifice some bandwidth and use the TOR network. Atleast that is encrypted and chained.
Another solution is a VPN. These can be rented monthly and provide a much MUCH higher level of security than other methods.
Do you even know what a VPN is? How would that protect your identity?Quote:

Be wise when you're online. Then you must not be paying attention. It may not have happened on this site, but it has happened on many others that have been shut down (and shall remain nameless). When the feds come to shut down a site, they subpoena all records, including IP addresses. If youve got nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about. Actually your router does something called NAT (Network Address Translation), and that really doesnt do anything to hide your IP address from a given website. Your external IP address still gets sent to the website you are visiting. The only difference (basically) is that they can only trace it back to your router, which is still in your house. As this guy said hes paranoid. Like really paranoid i dont like how people who arent very tech savvy take things so heavily first off a public proxy stores your records just like a forum would. As stated above your gonna want to use TOR if you want to be safe but i doubt you would ever get it running. I consider myself pretty tech savvy and i couldnt ever figure tor out nor would i care enough to figure it out as im not selling drugs online or something im jsut browsing a forum maybe id proxy if i was growing MAYBE.
