just wondering what i should be looking for on the package when buying cfls to make sure they are the right ones for growing
thanks but it doesnt say what a good cfl is like i want to know if it needs to be full spectrum etc basically i want to know if these lights are good enough to use they are 42 watt phillips the link is: Philips - 42W Twister Compact Fluorescent Lamp Medium Base 2700K - 139774 - Home Depot Canada
Are you using them in veg or in bloom?Quote:

Here's more about lighting.

Ebays got lots of good ones in red and blue spec, some are cheaper than others. the 250 watt one i got was £80 with next day delivery and came with reflector and easy rolls, but didnt say the lumen rating best bet to look for one that tells u that
i would definitely buy the big 200 -250 watt bulbs but i am worried the bulbs wont work with my cheap little outlet things, they are the kind that plug into the outlets do you know if they would work in these cheap little sockets?
and psteve i plan on using them for both veg and flower but during flower i plan to throw a little 150 watt hps on them as well and thanks a ton for the cheapo lighting guide lol its excellent
Here in the US I notice most packages I see don't list the kelvin rating.
With that said Daylight bulbs tend to be good for flowering and Bright white are good for Vegging.
Look in this thread. This plant was grown under CFLs.

thanks man i thought the daylight bulbs i have looked a little orangy and that plant of yours is quite a monster, very nice
thanks. It's my first grow. I'm very happy with the results. I'm even happier that it seems to be female and all my time/love wasn't wasted on it.
lol.
good luck on your grow.
would you mind telling me what kind of soil you are using and how many lights and the spectrom. i cant seem to find a soil with a decent ph runoff without doing all kinds of crazy stuff to my water it gets very sickening

2700k bulbs are called 'warm white', and have more red in their spectrum, making them better for FLOWER.
Then you should be using Daylight spectrum bulbs (more than 5000k).Quote:

thanks for clearing that up psteve i guess i was using the right ones after all
you guys know how to rep up someone? im sure you do so let me know and still wondering about the soil question posted above

hmm i am currently using promix right now for veg... too bad i cant get no foxfarm in my area
you could just continue to use your promix and add your ferts.
I really liked the promix, it's quality soil.
Actually because fox farms ocean forest is so expensive I do a 50/50 mix of promix and fox farms.
I think it worked out well for me.
I use age old grow organic fertilizer for veg, I haven't picked up anything for flowering yet, but I'll get something tomorrow.
I think you could get away with promix the entire grow.
would you happen to know the ph of the promix or the ph of the runoff and if you just know the runoff what ph water were you using thanks
I don't really know the ph of promix. I can get a small 4" pot real quick and take the run off measurement of my tap water real quick.
Let me do that. I'll repost it in a second for you.
ok.. here's what I got
Tap water ph: 7.4
soil run off of promix in a 4" pot: 7.4
I used about 12oz of water.
so I would say that promix has a ph of 7. If you get some ph down solution and just ph your water to 6.3-6.8 you should be just fine I think.
Thinking back on it that's what I did initially before I transplanted them.
I hope this helps.
be sure to get some ph up as well since nutes will probably knock you down below where you need to be.
It's cheap and worth it. I think I paid 8 bucks each for 2 big 1 liter bottles of ph up and ph down by technaflora.
thanks man
So just to make double sure, you want 6000k for veg and 3000k for flower. After that, you can't really go wrong. :)
ok cool il probably just use 3 45 watt bulbs of each the lower and higher kelvin should probably work out pretty good
I find it is hard to find CFL packaging that contains the Kelvin rating too. I don't mind making two trips so I usually go to whatever store and see what they have... then go visit the manufacturers website. They usually have ALL the specs on every bulb they make (lumens, watts, kelvin.) I know GE for sure, N:Vision, Phillips I think. Hope that helps anyone who wanders through. Good luck :jointsmile:
hi there. im new 2 growing and i was wondering if a 125w cfl light would work to flower a single clone in space o about 1.5 x 1.5 x 3 any help would be appreciated.:rastasmoke:
gwyndaf,
you should start your own thread, but i would try adding at least 1 more 125w cfl to flower. it would greatly benefit yields and potency.
i will start doing my own thread soon but im new to this site n computer 2 me is like ocket science i will ad another 125w cfl to my growroom if thers enough space inint as it only small. thanks 4 the help:thumbsup:

mj needs both red and blue light throughout its life cycle, just in different proportions depending on which stage of life it is in.
during the vegetative growth stage you want to use mostly blue or cool light as that will help keep the plant from stretching.
during flowering you want mostly red light to promote bud growth
so, to sum up, during veg you want to use about a 4 to 1 ratio, watt for watt, blue to red
during flowering you want to use about a 3 to 1 ratio, watt for watt, red to blue
