I need help wiring my 3 prong plug

Hello. I'm in France, and I bought a fluorescent lamp by OSRAM that came with wordless instructions for connecting the wires to the lamp (I had to buy the wires at a different store) so I bought the cable with blue, yellow/green and brown wires inside, and I bought a 3 prong plug, (well, here in france it's 2 prongs and one hole). I can't figure out what goes where and what's not supposed to be touching what in the plug. If I could find a pdf with pictures, I think I could figure it out. Otherwise I guess I have to go back to the man who sold me the wires and beg him to do it for me, and he'll undoubtedly charge me a hefty fee.

I am not aware of power types and wiring standards in France, so I can't offer too much advice. I would, however, recommend that you call a smaller hardware store and ask them for the wiring standard. They should be able to tell you what color wire goes where.

Is it a polarized plug? Is one of the prongs fatter than the other?

You could disassemble a power plug on an item you don't want and figure it out from that.

The diagrams are for an English 3 point plug.

As a general rule the blue is the LIVE wire and will go to the left hand contact.
The green Yellow is Nuetral and would normaly go to the contact for the hole.
The Brown is EARTH and would then be connected to the right hand contact.

Easy way to remember is the second letters of brown and blue
r = right
l = left

The colored wires are for the convenience of human beings - the electricity couldn't care less what color the insulator is. Regardless, if you don't know how to hook up a plug, you shouldn't be doing it. Take the wire and plug and lamp to someone who knows what they are doing and get it hooked up properly.

The colours are the way to identify each wire as either live nuetral or earth and are an accepted norm throughout Europe, that is why they are colour coded to enable any electrician to easily wire any appliance.

Brown is earth? In England green/yellow is ALWAYS earth, not brown. I dont know about France though.

Brown is positive, blue negative and yellow/green earth.

The good thing about French plugs is that the brown and blue wires can be swapped without causing problems.
