ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Hello all! This will be my 2nd grow using all cfls and a rubbermaid box setup. I have used close to the same format of Bodems construction but I did alter a few things.
I am also new to posting things here and I would like to show pictures of what I am doing, but im having a hard time posting pics, so bear with me.:rasta:
Before I start I would like to ask if I am posting this correctly and how would I get pictures for you guys to see this awesome grow in progress:hippy::hippy:

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
OK ALL!!!!:wtf: I figured it out. NOW!!!
I have done so much research on growing, lighting, soil, types of green, temps etc etc that im ready to dive into this (for the second time) with everything I got.
So to start us out I will be using two 30 gallon rubbermaid tubs.

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Ok now I have my shit together. I will be using 2 30 gallon tubs for this grow. I got this idea from this fourm a while back. I think it was Bodem who inspired me to try a tub grow. These are the two tubs I will be using for this grow.http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...gallontubs.jpg
Also, I will be using all cfl's for the entire grow. I will start with 6 26watt cfls (1750 lumens a piece) and I will add 42 watt cfl's as I progress forward. Im hoping to yield enough to at least smoke and evaluate my skills (so, maybe an oz or something). This will be my second grow this year and Im hoping to learn more and more.
These pics are the light fixtures I will be using to support and power the cfls.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...ghtsupport.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...htsupport1.jpg
As Bodem posted in previous post's these fixtures can be found at a Lowes or Menards. I picked these up at Menards and they were only $10 a piece! That's a hella deal.
The following pics are the basic construction of the tubs including mounting, wiring setups, the mylar tape installation and etc.

These pics are showing you the fan I will be using to extract heat from the box. This was a cheap desktop fan I bought at Walmart for $5. I simply removed the stand and used the fan portion.

Now this is just the top portion of the box. I will be finishing the bottom of the box tonight and posting those pics tonight. In this setup I will not be using anytype of carbon filter for smell (like Bodem) because This box is setup far enough away from people.

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Morning all:thumbsup: I figured I would post some pics of the remaining construction of my box. Here are some pics of the fan installed and running and the intake setup im using. I know this looks kind of stupid and cheap but it works.
However, I am concerned about the temps in this box. It seems to get pretty warm and fast. I understand it may be the cfl's im using. But what makes me noided is that I want to be able to leave this thing plugged in 24/24 for the fist part of my grow. But that heat issue kinda scares me as I dont want to leave for work in the morning only to return home to a burning house witht he police telling me it started from some weird setup in the basement.
Although I have done a lot of reading I would still like some input on my setup from some of you pro growers out there. I was thinking of adding another fan and a larger intake for better circulation. What do you guys think?
Anyway. Here are some more pics of the final assembly of the box and the intake I setup. Please give me your feedback, comment, suggestions!!!! I want to be a pro like some of the "big wigs" on the site.... Orange Man, Stinky Attic, Bodem just to name a few.
In the next day I will start my seedlings out in the box. I will be posting pics untill harvest so Im hoping to draw a crowd to my thread. I cant wait till you guys see this grow.
TAKE A LOOK AT MY PICS!!! ooooooo also I want to ask this. Where else could I post pics rather then photobucket? When I start posting my grow I really dont want it on there. I would prefer to have it setup like a lot of other threads I see on here where the pics are right there.! Ok now. Im done

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
All right, somedreamndigital, I have a concern for you. You have a nice looking rubbermaid grow box there. Very nice indeed. My concern is at your tiny fan on the top. Ventilation is very important and helps with tons of things.
Now, could that little fan you got there suffice? MAYBE, but it sure as hell would be a horrible thing to find out half way in that it is not and have to deal with it when you have plants in there. I have a little grow going as well, but I made sure I had good ventilation before I started. Here's my pic. Put a thermometer or something in there, let the box run for 8 or so hours (could be excessive lol just making sure it heats up) and see what the temp is.
Just think about it!!!!

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Thank You Balkey.... Yea, I already kinda knew this one small ass fan wouldnt be enough. Dammit. So, I guess I need to go bigger. Or what if I installed one more of these little fans.
Also, I was thinking. What if I put this out in my garage? See, Im in Wisconsin and right now it's winter for us. By doing that I wonder if the cooler air from the garage and this tiny ass fan would be enough to cool me down until I get a larger fan???
I thank you for your comments too. That's tight. Let me know what you think:thumbsup::jointsmile:
-
ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
I think you should cut a bigger hole, and go for a bigger fan, maybe at least double that size. Mine are 7inchers, and I have 2 of them, but my tub is also something like 54 gal.
Well, considering your in the north and its winter, using that little fan and placing it in the garage should be fine. But if you want that thing to be long term without you altering it anymore then do it right the first time ya know. That's my two cents.
I do think that fan won't be enough though. Seriously though, get a thermometer, let your box run for a while, hours, and then see how hot it is in there. Should give you a good idea of the temperature difference from room temp. to your grow box temp. I can keep my box temp. only 2 degrees warmer than room temperature. :stoned::stoned:

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
What do you do when it's time to water? You always have to unscrew those screws?
-
ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Well, from what I see it's just a threaded bolt. So if he DID have to unscrew them every time, there's an easy fix. Simply, drill the hole SLIGHTLY bigger, so that the screw loosely slides in, instead of screwing in. It should still do it's purpose of holding the top and bottom tubs together.
-
ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
actually its the fan itself that looks questionable, not necessarily the size of the hole. I bought one of those crappy fans and it didn't last until morning even. I like the honeywell fans, also the PC fans that they sell at Radioshack 5" square manage to move a fair amount of air around. The rubbermaid is a great place to start, but keep in mind that if you don't train your plants fairly early that you'll run out of space before the end of the process.....
-
ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
yes somedream just keep trouble shooting, probably a bigger fan, what CFM is the current one rated. if you can i would move it to your garage, lower temps encourage females. Just do trial and error without paying attention to how much you spend.

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
 Thank You Balkey - I do have a thermo in there. It's one of those cheap digital ones. I did those "test runs" last night. First in the basement and one run in the garage. The basement temp reading was 71 degrees, the box gave me readings of 81-84 degrees after running it for only 3 hours. I moved it out to the garage where the temps were 30-37 degrees and the box temp dropped to 60-64 degrees and that was after running it for 4 hours there. For security reason, I think I may just go ahead, cut the bigger hole, get rid of that shit fan, replace with a 7incher like you did and go with that. My goal is to simply have the box done and ready before my little chicks start to show up. Thank You Balkey. You ROck!!!
Hey Smoke!!:) Nice to meet ya. Balkey was correct. I have some threaded bolts with holes slightly larger so that I can simply pop them out to remove the top.
12345 -whats up. Yea this fan is pretty shitty. But unlike the one you had Ive had this one for almost 7 months or so. I was using it for a little desktop fan and ran it all the time. But I always took it apart to clean it. And you bring a good point; Pc Fans. I have a shit load of them. I may go ahead and add a few just to "push" air in and one to help my shitty one. Good point, thank you. How early do you suggest starting lst? Thanks for your input.
BODEM!!!! Hey Whats up!!!!! you rock! anyways.. I don't know the cfm rating on that fan, however I will be taking 121345 and Bakeys advice and making some changes. I will post the pix tonight after they are done. Let me ask you BODEM, when do you suggest starting lst?
Thank you all for your support. This site and you guys rock!!! Ill be posting more pics soon.

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
OK guys, Well I still can't seem to locate the the paper clip to attach pics so I will post direct links once again to the site so you can view my pics.
Anyways, I have recieved a lot of bad ass suggestions about tweaking my rubbermaid so that it will perform at it's best. One of my main concerns was temps. I have just added 2 pc fans for help with cooling.http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...l/100_5666.jpg
Now what I wish to accomplish here is simple. I want to continue using my small desktop fan on top of the lighting to pull heat out of the box and bring in cooler air. I also want to install the pc fans on each side of the box where the lighting support is. I installed a fan blowing in and one blowing out. They are positioned so that the fan bringing in cooler air is blowing it across the lights. The fan on the opposite side is pulling it out along with the small desktop fan on top.
In theory, (well, mine at least) This will keep my cfl's a lot cooler therefore reducing heat inside of the box.
I ran one more test run last night for 3 hours and it dropped temps in the box dramatically! Why am I so excited?! I removed one of the 26 watters and replaced it with a 42 watter and im still running low temps. Keep in mind tho, im only testing the box over a 3 hour time frame. When I place my ladies in their home the box will be pumping 24/24 untill the veg cycle. What do you guys think about that?:(
Moving ahead tho, I will be placing the girls in tonight and I will begin posting the actual growing instead of all this chatter about the construction of the box. Im looking for feedback, critisim anything you can think of that im not doing or what ever let me know.:jointsmile::jointsmile::jointsmi le::jointsmile::jointsmile::rasta:
This pic is the complete installation of the fans.

hey i was planning on using wall mounts(A 4 socket with Y's so a total of 8 cfl 23w) like you did for your tub grow but i dont know how to hook up the wires....if you could shoot me a PM about how to do that or anyone for the matter of fact, i would REALLY appreciate it.
good luck on your grow

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Hey Bvrian! This is very simple. From my experience it's all a science of matching the colors. As usuall, black is always the grounding wire, typically red is positive and im not exactly sure of what the white wire is but I always hook that up last AFTER i've completed the other colors. Each electrical componet used has a diffrent wire sceme therefore I would have to see pictures of what your using and I will be better able to walk you through it. Im no electrician by any means, but ive been "riggin" things for many years and (cross my fingers) have had no issues with anything. Post some pics of what your trying to hook up and I will help, and im sure there are a lot of others who will se the post and help too.

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
;)OK folks. After a very trying 2 weeks of fighting with temps and security I was finnaly able to post my girls under some light. I've had the issue with the box getting pretty warm in there. It was around 92 degrees after only 8 hours of light running. So i've installed a larger fan and that brought temps down to 61-67 degrees and that's running them all the time.
here are some pics of the girl after a week or so. http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...al/2-12-08.jpg

lookin good!
I checked the wires and there are a total of 3 wires, A black wire, A white wire, and a Green wire. The black and white wire i believe are the 2 power supplies and both come out of the back of the fixture. Then the green one i think is for grounding. What kind of power plug do i need to buy??

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
:thumbsup:Hey Green!!!! What I did to resolve my heat issues was a very simple step. Instead of making a larger whole ( 11'') I decided to keep a small fan on top about 4 1/2'' and i added two pc fans about (4'') round on each side of the lighting portion of the box. I have one set as n intake bringing in cooler air across the lights and I have the other on the opposite end for outake so that there is a stream of cooler air always blowing across the lights. The small desktop fan I have on top is always pulling the warm air from the lights right out of the box. Iknow that sounds confusing but it brought my temps from 90 degrees or so down to a very consistant 65 -70 degrees all day, and thats powering it 24/24 for 3 weeks now!
Hey Smoke, It's been about 3 weeks since my last post of my plants. Now im fighting the issue of some sort of defiency ( i think) here are some pics just taken of my babes. Im getting yellow leafs and curling. But I still get the new growth. Im kinda confused. From what I have read this means there are too many nutes or some sort of defiency im not aware of. Anyways.... you guys take a look and shoot me some feedback on what YOU guys think this may be...

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Hey green I jus tlooked at your setup. Nice build up. My concerns... that fan on top is wayyyy to smaill. the temps in that box gets up there pretty quick. I would put thatpc fan on the sides and put a larger fan on top. Thats what I did and it took temps down dramatically!!!
Also, I have my plants sitting up higher closer to the lights. I did that because I didnt want streching of my plants. Other than that I think it looks good so far. Keep us posted on pics!!!

could be either potassium, zinc, or sulfur.
marijuana bible suggests those . . . look at your nutes. . those are the ones showing yellowing at the edges/ brighter green leaves followed by the dark brown/red edges that are curled and look burnt. You might as well clip those brown parts off they be dead Im sure. :P
but the curling leaves suggest the fertilizer is too strong, or the plant is sensitive to it . . .
What is your pH right now? remember... 6.0-6.5 = happy pot plant :pimp:

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
This all looks great! And I'm impressed by the simplicity and design of the stacked Rubbermaids. I have a couple questions though...
Has anyone tried this (more expensive) option:
Rubbermaid Vertical Shed : Target
(if that link does not work, google: Rubbermaid-Vertical-Shed)
It's 72Hx30Wx25D" so the pains of training the plants would be at a minimum. I would take issue with cutting this thick plastic, ventilation, and the lights would have to be hung on the inside to be adjustable. These seem like small issues that could easily be overcome. I think the CFL lights are great and one could easily make a bank of lights from 2 of these same light strips (6 lights total) and attached to a thin square of wood to float above the plants. Perhaps a shorter version of this shed would be ideal - Suncast Balcony Box : Target
Also...
I first learned of this technique on this forum from Bodom Children Of. But one of the posts mentioned the passive intake and someone asked, "How are you keeping light from disturbing the dark period during flowering with that fan like that?" I have the same question. Why bother making a bend in the PVC if you have a hole at the top of the box? If the sun comes through the windows in your grow area (like at 7am), how do you control the light during flowering? I assume that this minimal light entering the fan-hole does not affect the plants throwing buds? ...Or else everyone would have posted about it. Has anyone had trouble with this?

ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
Nice work SDD! I've been reading up on the rubbermaid stuff. Gonna go pick up my materials next weekend to start with my tub grow. Thanks for posting your progress because it really helps us new guys. I'm going to start off with the tubs and see how far I get and hopefully move to a cabinet when I get some experience under my belt.
Mackey, I've looked at the rubbermaid sheds but I'm planning on using a rubbermaid cabinet in the future. Take a look: http://boards.cannabis.com/closet-ca...maid-idea.html
So far the tub idea looks to be the most economical to get started with and theres a lot of good information and results on this board.

:pimp::pimp: I am back with some weird ass news. My plant is starting to look like it's already budding???
But, first. To pay credit where it is due, Mackey! :rasta:Thanks for view. Yes, That's where I started my rubbermaid. It was from BODOM. He rocks! All I did to stop the light in mine, is a thick panty hoes:stoned: I put a painr directly over the hole where my fan is at and for some reason this really works.:rasta: This is is in a room where people are always in and out. Therefore I always have some type of light on my plants. Until I tried this crazy ass idea.lol:rastasmoke: And it works. Check out the pics of my current grow and you will see what Im talking about. I'll post some pics when I get home!
The reason im trippin out on this is beacuse my plants are only 4 months old. I thought it took just a little longer than that. I will post the pics of thses crazy "buds" comning out of this thing.:wtf:
