What crops to plant to hide my "plants"

If a farmer in the south wanted to incorporate some medicinal plants into his legal crop, what would be some good crops for that? Talking less than an acre of land.

People always think corn is the best, but they are two different shades of green and look out of place if seen from the air. Also if you don't have an early flowering strain, it won't be ready before the corn is. I'm thinking sunflowers might be a good one, but this person would like some other ideas. Maybe instead of having rows you could broadcast the seeds and cover them lightly with a plow, making more of a random pattern. I might even go with a "garden" plant, that you could harvest by hand and give to friends/neighbors to eat. Was thinking tomatoes b/c of the fact that you have a reason to inspect the plants and take time caring for them. Could even put up one of those wire braces around your "plant" like you would a tomato plant.

I also plan on leaving a couple of native weeds in the garden to help. I hope to have several different varieties of crops, not only for cover, but also to have fresh vegies.

I've tried each of the cover plants you mentioned.

Corn can make a good dense screen, but wants a heck of a lot more nitrogen than weed so they really shouldn't be grown in close proximity in earth. I plant small patches of corn strategically to block potential lines of sight, but weed growing close by will be in a pot.

Sunflowers sound like the perfect crop, but they are far from it. They grow straight up on a single stem and once flowering, lose all the leaves up their stems and any potential they had to disguise your plants. Also being so tall, they attract attention to the area you are trying to hide.

Tomatoes, well they can and do pass on fungal and viral problems to cannabis and if they were planted early enough to cover your vegging growth, they would have long finished before a sativa is through flowering.

Cannabis in flower is very distinctive and I have found it difficult to hide within a single species crop. I now plant a large mixture of different vegetables and keep my plants tied low. They seem to camouflage better amongst a variety of different leaf shapes.

I haven't tried it, but I think bamboo might have some potential. That is, of course, if you can control the spread of the bamboo.

SOmething like millet grows like corn but requires less nutrients.

watch "george cervantes ultimate grow dvd". he shows at several points a crop that is practically invisible amongst regular undergrowth. no clue what type tho...

Try growing Tapioca......We grow tapioca here and it kinda sorta looks like weed.

my first encounter with a cannabis plant was at a rose farm. i had to wrk there as a kid. behind a barn was a whole patch of over grown weeds, all types, spiky ones, ones with sharp points, even one that would leave welts on your skin if you touched or ran into it, and the were all tangled together with other none threat growth. trying to be productive i took it upon myself to destroy this 6 foot tall wall of jungle. i took a big chunk out and stopped dead in my tracks. and there it was, it had long skinny leaves, a mid tone green color, like a tree frog. must of been four feet tall. i ran around the side of the barn and found a little trail that lead to four different locations all separated randomly. what a find. i used this stash as my own personal leaf for smoke connection. damn near all summer. but I'm rambling.
any who, after realizing i destroyed a nice size of cover i ran back around and tried fix the weeds, propped them up against each other,( thats how i know about the welts and sharp ones). it looked fine for about 3 days then there was a big dead dry patch and could see the frog in the background. i was questioned, and i humbly denied i had any thing to do with it. besides it was my uncle, and the basted wouldn't even pay me the shity pay some times. he tied it down later.
so if I'm ever in a place were i can grow outdoor on my own property, I'm gonna start by growing a bunch of spiky, sharp, welty inducing weeds, (its amazing how thick this shit can grow) and if that alone doesn't keep people away i'll make sure to put up surveillance and bobe traps, but then it all depends on the location.

i never actually got to smoke any bud off the plant, wasn't there long enough. i know two ended up male. when i would roll joints of the male and female leaves i would get a constant buzz but never past the point to highness. but i didn't know the difference at that age. thanks if anyone actually read all this.:smokebong:

The suggestion of MULTIPLE cover crops is a good one. A messy hodgepodge of plants will hide cannabis better than a monoculture, since the eye is naturally drawn to anything tht stands out as different. Peppers, peas on beanpoles (I've often thought about growing the pot INSIDE the pea teepee, lol), even flowers with sharp foliage. Astilbe would be ideal except that it's a shade plant and doesn't get tall. There's another- I think it's cleome?- a purple-flowered plant with GREAT foliage for hiding herb.
And have you heard of growers hanging red-painted Christmas tree ornaments on their pot plants and then planting them among tomatoes?

I heard somewhere that u can get types of bamboo that dont put out runners and are easy to controll and if u cant find that kind u can get root barriers to stop the regular type from going too ballistic. Also there's this tree thing that keeps popping up in my yard that has leaves with a simmilar shape and colour too weed plants not shore of it name tho and im in australia so im not sure how much use that is too u guys exxcept sarah

I was going to suggest bamboo also... its very prolific in the south, grows pretty tall and dense... but the hard part is controlling the spread of the stuff. Its kind of like kudzu....its sounded like a good idea at the time, but quickly got out of hand. If you already have the bamboo, then thats a no brainer... use it for cover.

A friend grew a ring of Mint plants(Australian origin IIRC) around a plant(think, circle of mint, with a 1M gap in the middle), as mint grows nice and thick.

now his garden is covered in mint, the stuff is like garden cancer, every time you deal with one, six more pop up :wtf:

i have a bamboo in my garden, its a black leaf variety iirc, and its very manageable, i'll take a snap tomorrow.

Some excellent ideas you and some others have. The hodpodge of tall plants is best. I personally like the spikey purple ones. Anyhow, I really like the idea of pea teepees! We already do the bean poles.

I'm looking for some great ideas to plan out for next summer.
My friend has about 20 wonderful wooded acres. Next spring/summer should be a blast! The "kid" is 18 now, legal age. I'm so happy for that. He gets all the heavy lifting.:hippy::hippy:

have you considered tobacco?

Tobacco is not a good cover crop. It has very large leaves and its growth habit is about as dissimilar to cannabis as you can get.
I also seem to remember hearing something about other plants not being able to coexist with tobacco because of a chemical the plant produces, but I've got no further info.

This past season I had 1 pretty beastly plant that stuck out like a boner in church. After topping and tying I decided to throw a net around it. Although it looked pretty legit at this point, (like a shrub of some sort) I went ahead and twist tied some little fake purple flowers.
I know this may not be very helpful for you, but for a plant or two, well let's just say I got flybys 2-4 times a WEEK, and I'm still around ;)

That Texas Star Hibiscus looks interesting! And there was a great "Kenaf bust" long ago and I seem to remember somewhere reading about how some dumb DEA agents pulled up some dude's ginseng patch back in the 70s! yeah, I think a few rows of tomatoes, okra, and green beans, will work nicely. I just need to get some wire frames to put around them to keep them up from the weight of the fruits so that they can grow tall. Its going to be a large garden, so some of the native weeds will find a way to grow as well ;)

We are planning to add some flowers of different varieties, not only for cover, but to fill in some spots instead of the local careless weeds taking it in. It should look nice and be plenty of cover. Maybe getting some fake flowers to pin on my plants would work too :) Thanks for all of the suggestions.
