i used supersoil from home depot, its about the best generic soil. but after already planting my seeds i learned that i should of used a soil more like a fox farm type, or u can make ur own soil. u can find recipies in many places to do this. your grow, your choice. good luck

Go to HD buy some jiffy pots also buy some MG organic potting soil and MG perilite and what ever your going to use for lighting. When the seed germinates plant it in a jiffy pot let it sprout usualy with in a week or less wait till the seedling has it's second set of leaves then plant it in the MG soil with a mixture of 4p soil 1p perlite no other fert's needed. MG soiL thends to hold water so you have watch your watering cycle also most important get a ph tester and always test the water than kick back and watch her grow

I am currently using MG moisure control in my grow and it works just fine, you just have to be carefull with nutes and moniter your ph due to it is pre-nuted. I use one tbls of vinigar per gallon of water every watering just to make sure I do not let the ph go to high and only use mild organic nutes from fox farm (grow big, big bloom, and tiger bloom), I do not use the chemical stuff due to it makes my ph shoot up and is to easy to burn the roots with pre nuted soil. I have read that fox farm soil is the way to go but for $20.00 a bag and (1 bag = 1 bucket) having to fill 10-5 gallon buckets that was not pratical.
This is just the way I do it and it works for me but there are SOOOOO many differant soils and recipies out there, you are just going to have to choose one and go with it.

OMG first of all for you people who frown on MG its the best thing to use and its cheap i bet you any so called EXPERT on this site has used that once before and to make it so much better you dont have to add nutes because MG takes care of that...DOnt knock something until you try it..and I've been growing for a while and been using MG for a while and i have wonderful buds...Yeilds you wouldn't think of getting from MG
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
I don't like MG because you don't have the sort of control over feeding schedule that you would have with a more bare-bones soil. Also the peat content can be problematic for many growers, especially if you are keeping the plants in the same pot for more than a couple months.
Whatever you choose for your seedlings should be light, airy, and contain no added ferts. If all you can get is pre-ferted stuff, the MG organic isn't THAT bad if you add some extra perlite and flush the soil out before putting your beans in there.

LMAO right..people on this site trips me out...Remember that Post a LONGGGG time ago with that one guy who said "CHEAP GROW" and his shit came out better than any grow log i've ever seen..And he used a trash can...ANd all thru his grow log you had people doubtin his efforts to this "cheap grow" but when his plants started growing and He had a VERY big yeild....ANd to make it bad, a lot of people were there like "you cant go cheap to do this..you cant use cheap blah blah".My Point is.... You dont have to use it i understand but i kno a bunch of people who used MG and still came out successful, so the moral of this story is just because something dont work for you doesnt mean it doesnt work for others....... but YOUUUUUU kno best so i wouldnt take my advice over yours if this was my post but TRUST ME, MG is not as bad as it seems...Correct, you cant control it but then again you dont have to worry about adding to much Nutes and too little nutes and when you use MG your not suppose to use the whole entire thing for a plant, your suppose to use half regular soil and half MG and its not strong at all i dont understand... but for a seedling i understand i can see you not using cuz its strong but for a plant thats 2weeks n older then MG is the best for BEGGINERS...and thats my opinion, Im not comming at anybody in anyway possible, im just kickin what I kno is a fact for me...but hey thats me, it worked for me when i first started....
Peace

LOL...woooo-saaaaa!! nah im just tired of people shittin on cheap utensils for growing marijuana.... But just for the people who took my words the wrong way, i'm not saying its "THE BEST SOIL IN THE WORLD" but for a begginer it should be fine. I can remember being a begginer and one big thing begginers deal with other than mites are nutrient problems, for adding too little or too much!! But with the Miracle Grow all you do is water and add other fertz later down the line...I dunno, maybe it was just easy for me or something... :wtf:

HAHAHAHA Finally somebody speaks the truth, im on my third grow and all 3 I use MG, my plant turned out to be fire as hell for my first grow and I got the seed from a bag of mids, and Florescent lights. I used MG the whole time.

The Moisture Control MG has a small amount of Coco Coir in it too. Almost impossible to overwater, if you have enought drainage holes; as least in flowering mode.... Still need to add perlite/vermiculite.
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
I did add 2 cups vermaculite per bucket in
the 2.5 gallon buckets. And added 3 cups to the girls in the 5 gallon buckets the girls are in now. Comes out to 1 cup per gallon.

I have put, and still put seedling in MG soil, and use either MG or FFOF. Whatever MY bank allows. FYI My Seedlings in MG, all 3-3 Sprouted, and now are doing great! But that is just my luck. What nutes are you using? I use FF nutes, and Noticed that when I feed them That the PH goes up a lot faster, than when its in FFOF.
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
I used MG Moisture control for my first grow and had no problems.
I switched after reading all the posts and now I have PH issues.
MG is not a problem if you add the perlite like most are saying and monitor your PH. No nutes for seedlings and all should work fine. Personal preference I guess.

BEGINNERS SOIL
My nute mix for veg was, 3 tbls hydrogen peroxide, 2 tbls backstrap mollasses, 1 tbls apple cider vinagar, 2 tbls FF grow big first 4 weeks, 2tbls FF big bloom starting week 5 to current. per gallon of water. Next watering I am changing to FF tiger bloom till harvest.

Well, I am glad to see some people got on their soap box, but really, crazy is the one who needed help.
An answer to his/her question is: Go with MG...BASICALLY because he has no other choice. If you see the places he has available to him, Lowes, etc., MG is his/her only real option. I'm a noob and had a hydroponic store in my area for my soil needs. He/she doesn't have that option.
So, go with MG, if you add nuts, be careful and don't over due it.
But for me, I got fox farm, added some perlite and away I went. With my soil I will know that my plant is dying from my actions and not some time released bullshit that MG loves. I'm not doubting MG, I am sure it does its job, but as far as a complete noob goes, the noob (ME!!) needs to learn how to use nuts and see the plants reactions to the growers actions, not the soils.
Now, everyone, I'm packing a bowl right now....everyone puff puff passs son! :joint1:

I wish I had saved the pics from the end of my Moisture Control MG grow. I thought it worked fine for me. I ended up with 36 oz dry from 9 plants under a 1000k hps. The only other nutes I used was GH Bloom. I'm just now starting a new grow and will try Stinky's recipe and see if I can see a difference. These pics were from day 38 of flower after a 4 week veg from seed under flouros. I must have deleted the rest of the pics by accident.
Good growing all.

Hey all, just looking for some insight. I have a buddy that can't take the waiting to see if his soil grow is going to be ok. He mixed his own soil kind of, it was a bag of some very good ph'd soil of some kind with the stuff already in it that helps drainage and texture. Anyway, he also got some bat guano 10-3-5 and 5% of the N is water soluable, which means that 5% is not. Also some bonemeal 0-22-0 and sul po mag that is something-something-something higher number. He did use less than the directions said per gallon of soil, he put about 18 tblspns of bat guana, 16 of bonemeal, and 10 or so of the sul-po-mag. Mixed it real well, he used red lava rocks in the bottom of the pots for drainage. Question, are his plants gonna die soon? He just re-potted them from their 4 inch pots to their 6 or 8 inch pots. They have been popped from seed for about 2 weeks, will his soil kill them. He is also going to use liquid karma for watering, should that be used everytime, or alternated. Sorry getting to be off the soil topic. Any feedback would be appreciated.

BEGINNERS SOIL
That's a LOT of fertilizer for such young plants. Hell, that's a lot of fertilizer for ANY plant.
Yes. That is likely to kill them.
Damn, son. Get them out of that hot stuff and unless you want to go fully-organic, don't do soil amendments on your first grow. You get problems that are hard to fix by flushing when you start using solids in your dirt.
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
So you would recommend flushing. How does he get nutrients to his plants? Just by mixing them in the water? He has some of the Botanicare Pure Blend Pro for growth and flowering. Would you recommend just using the regular soil with nothing added and just water per half the instructions on the bottle?
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
Should they just be re-potted?
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
Wow, I kill threads great!
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
Re-pot them if they haven't been sitting in it long enough to root in there significantly.
The excess soil with all that extra stuff in it is great as a top-dressing on your garden plants.
For a noob, yeah, stick to watering your fertilizer in in liquid form until you are comfortable growing and also diagnosing def/tox symptoms.
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
I don't like MG because you can't use your own ferts and the bud tastes....bad. If you're stuck with places like Lowe's, HD, etc, go with Sta-Green all purpose potting soil. It can be found at any Lowe's. It's cheap as hell and works wonderfully. I got this tip from a local grower of over 20 years.

Thanks alot folks, I told my buddy everything and he was in motion the last I knew. He has been using just plain tap water to flush with, and water with. He is also going to use liquid karma and neem oil. He said that he read that you used that also stinky, wants to know what kind of pattern to water and feed with. Should he water everytime with the botinacare fert, that's what the lable says. He is going to start with a 1/4 strength for the first gallon given his previous episode with the soil. How often should he use the liquid karma, neem oil, and what about molasses? I said something to him about it and he acted like I was crazy. I know that I have seen stuff about it before. Sorry for getting off topic. Thanks for your patience.

BEGINNERS SOIL
I'm using Black Gold all purpose potting soil, haven't added a thing. Hopefully I don't regret that down the road.
-
BEGINNERS SOIL
Neem oil isn't a fertilizer; you mix it for a foliar spray and mist lightly every so often to protect your plants from pests, mold, and water loss.
Liquid Karma, follow the directions on the bottle.
Molasses, use at about a tablespoon per gallon during flower to increase bud weight and resination and improve flavor.
