Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
So, I ordered seeds and got a pack of free seeds with my order and these free seeds (south african skunk) all grew messed up, 5 of 10 sprouted and theyt all grew the same way and very slowly, i tossed 4 of em thinkin they were fucked, and kept 1 because it looked normal and now it did the same thing, it grows on one side normally and the other side grows deformed looking leafs and about a 1/4h the speed + the total plant size as about 20% of my others, though a different strain planted at same time

my others are this size, planted at the same time as the south african but this is a nirvana power plant

maby stupid but i go 24/0 with the drip and 18/6 lights, that a bad idea wit the drip?

Your schedules are fine, and I don't really see the weird growth in your pictures. It does look like a little nutrient burn perhaps is going on. Why not grow it out and see what happens, unless of course you don't have the room, time, or patience?

Cool. Always interested in how weird stuff turns out.

My vote is on heat stress.
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
well it could be heat, i am at the molment vetilationless, and the mh buld makes a lot of heat but the temp never hits over 102F
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
but not sure if it is def the heat since all my other plants are fine + it happen to all these seeds even before i transplanting from cfl to the mh

NEVER over 102.....thank god for that...:wtf:
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
why what it the ideal temp?
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
Like 78 or something. That's just my goal for my set up. It usually is more like 84 or so, but I could always pull the light back some. The warmer it is the faster they grow, within reason, but then heat adds chances for stress, mold, fungus, and root rot.

Just teasing you Jimmy.....you said that so innocently. Ideal room temp is about 70....keep under 80 if at all possible.....opie's stretching at 85 imo BUT the REAL key is this.....(shhhhh) when the leaf surface temps go over 80 degrees (usually at about 85 degrees room temp or so depending on ventilation, how close your light is etc..) the plants growth will slow down tremendously. Photosynthesis drops a HUGE amount (in fact almost to 0 if I remember correctly) when leaf surface temp exceeds 80 so while your plants may seem fine-ish at a higher temp.....it behooves both you and your plants to keep temps down. ;)
You can buy yourself a cheap $20 handheld temp gun and that will give you an accurate reading of your leaf surface temps. :)
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
Weedhound, would you say that when the air is 80, so is the surface of the leaf? Or is it cooler than air temps because there is moisture circulating through it and evaporating from it? Or is it hotter because HID light is bouncing off it?
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
Oh here we go:
...evaporating water cools the leaves below that of air temp...
http://www.plantstress.com/articles/...SI_phoenix.pdf
It's a little technical, but it's interesting and answers some questions.

Opie.....I'm glad you asked me that question. (:D) Allow me to pontificate. I use a 1kw hps in a cool tube and do have one of those cool little temps guns and have checked surface leaf temps under different conditions. With a good oscillating fan blowing (room temp approx 85 ish) AT the leaves pretty consistently (between light and leaves....maybe 18 inches of space between them) the leaf temps closest to the light usually will stay at about 78-79. That's for older, mature leaves...new growth can be more tender but I haven't ALWAYS found that to be true. Almost ANYTHING can affect that tho imo.....even if the air cooling the light is 10-15 degrees cooler (perhaps its a rainy day or....) will have an effect. Mylar caused HORRIBLE leaf temp and hot spot issues for me ....especially when I got my cool tube vs my old reflector. Some of the things that will affect the leaf surface temps that I have found are DEFINITELY room temp, how hot and how close is your light, and whether you are actively moving air around the plants among other things. I can't say about humidity one way or the other however....mine's pretty much in the 30's always so never see any differences there to judge.
The reason for REALLY wanting to move the air around with a fan and keeping your room temps lower are two important things to me because they directly affect how low I can get my light to the plants. And we ALL know the lower the better there. ;)
Ps Opie: my fave little dogs: chihuahuas, pugs, bostons, papillons, and cairn terriors. :D (and mongrels of course!!!)

Actually I'm just parroting what my hydro guy told me (when he sold me the temp gun :D) but I would trust my hydro guy with my life. He IS.....GOD.

Learning stuff nearly daily. Thanks Weedhound.
Tomorrow I search cairn terriers. Mongrels from the animal shelters around here cost more than pure-bred from breeders. Time for sleepy-bye now.

Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
ok well i got a little problem i use my closet to grow 4*4 got my hps/mh hanging from the middle but i have no way i could ventilate this.
If i cut a hole in the door for exause it would be a little apparent what im doin
if i keep the door open, after 4:30pm when it gets dark out, from out side my windows are lit up like a fuckin christmas tree
so i keep the door shut and my thermometer says its max is usaly 102f but i try to keep the humidity up (in early grow stage) so they dont burn up
but im gunna need to fix this prity soon

There's only two ways I know about......ventilating (which you talked about...holes in door etc..)....or use cooler lighting like cfls or something along that line which will lesson your yield but may be the way to go here. Those are the only two ways I can think of but perhaps others have better ideas. :)
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
yea, but i would hate to have bought my htg light kit for nothing <- love that light
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
Imo....the lights make your plants happen. But it IS amazing how much heat they create isn't it?
When I first got my 1kw light I brushed off my hydro guys talk about ventilation and discovered the hard way (as you have) about the heat they create. In a 12 x 16 room WITH central a/c AND a window a/c I STILL had terrible issues keeping the temp down.
Ventilating the light was the only thing that worked for me....and it worked GREAT!!
Good luck....hope you find the answer. :)

Does your closet ceiling lead to an attic? For a grow in a 4x4 area, you could probably get away with a smaller exhaust/odor reduction system, which would also be easier to conceal. Ventilating fresh air in could be as easy as keeping a fan trained on the opened closet door. Vortex, or "Vornado" fans are great at circulating air around a room. Anyway, this would really cut down on your heat problem, which isn't good for your plants.

Yeah.... 102......
NOT GOOD!
70 to 75 at all times during light. It should drop more than 10 to 15 degrees at night or else you could get some pretty hardcore disease and mold.
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
Your seedling is growing lopsided because you have the drip emitter splashing on only one side, wetting down those leaves, and leaching nutrients out of them. It's called reverse foliar feeding. You're stunting one side.
BURY the end of your drip emitter under the hydroton.
And get those temps down below 85!!!! lol
-
Whats The Deal Wit These Plants???
I hate to say it, but you may need to downsize your lights. Yes they are creating way too much heat for the space. Can you vent into the ceiling? Even if it just goes into the space between the sheetrock and floorboards it's taking the heat away. You can get a bathroom vent fan for relatively cheap and it'll be better than nothing. Remember, heat rises. If you start pulling air out of your closet then you'll automatically pull cooler air into the space.

I'm pretty sure he meant it shouldn't drop more than 15 degrees at night.

Opie's right; extreme temp changes between day and night are not only stressful to the plant, but lead to actual DEWFALL if you drop below the dew point for your %RH. Dewfall = bud rot. Eww.
Keep your day/night temps less than 15' apart; 10 is better.
Another neat factoid... extreme temp swings contribute to stretch. Betcha didn't know that! :D

You are right, I didn't. Care to elaborate?
