Canada uses military might in Arctic scramble
An international scramble for the Arctic's oil and gas resources accelerated yesterday when Canada responded to Russia's recent sovereignty claims with a plan to build two military bases in the region.
On a trip to the far north, the prime minister, Stephen Harper, said: "Canada's new government understands that the first principle of Arctic sovereignty is: use it or lose it. Today's announcements tell the world that Canada has a real, growing, long-term presence in the Arctic."

Just another global warming story.... I wonder who doubts global warming now...
Mr Bush, what do you think?... oh that's right, he's an idiot and his party thinks for him...
-

Well, it doesn't really have to do with global warming. More the fact that it's our land and we don't want the Russians taking it...

yet another example of canadian imperialism. i think it's obvious that this is just another step in canada's evil plan to take over santa's workshop and destroy christmas as we know it. the international community should band together to condemn this rogue nation whose ultimate goal is the annihilation one of the western world's most cherished institutions.

well this is at least a change from our liberals, who would have said...
"we want that land, eh"
and then russia says
"fuck off"
and then the liberals say
"ok enjoy your stay eh! Bring Parkas!"
The downside of not having our liberal government is that there is now a "war on drugs" so to speak...to think we were so close..

I believe this issue has only just surfaced in the eyes of the public. It sounds more and more to me like this arctic oil is becoming the worlds most valued, unclaimed asset, and will soon be the cause of serious discontent amongst nations.
Dare I say the next world war?....
What do you guys think? I'm far from an 'up to date' kinda dude, but this thing seems pretty volatile.

The way it sounds, the cost and actual knowledge on how to drill through the ice caps are far, far in the future. This is all based on a pipe dream of future drilling and people proving that they got a set.

IMO canada should be focusing on securing the North West passage. Leave the rest for the others with populations larger than 30 mil to fight over. We have enough empty space as it is.
And empire building has been going strong since confederation, a branch economy empire lol.

Somehow I think laying claim to (nearly) uninhabited and disputed arctic land, that is arguably part of Canadian territory, isn't the same "empire building" as invading a foreign nation with an established government on another continent. :wtf:

So what? All Russia did was lay claim to it, the dispute has been going on for years now, Russia finally just stuck in a flag and declared it theirs. This is a land in dispute, not a long-established country full of peoples and governments, cities and laws. If Canada actually grabs long-held undisputed Russian territory, we'd have a different story.

what about the elves? there must be millions of them up there by now. just think of all them poor displaced little buggers with no toys to build and no workshop to build them in. i suppose canada will probably claim they are invading to liberate them from santa's sweatshops, but it's just another lame excuse.

That's the Antarctic, rebgirl. I think it's in an international treaty of some kind - what you said.

Canada uses military might in Arctic scramble
At present there is an international agreement to limit economic activity in the Artic to a 200 mile zone that follows national coastlines. The rest of the Arctic is under governance of the International Seabed Authority.
However, Russia is believed to be expected to file a revised claim to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in order to have its claim processed - though objections are likely to see this rejected.
Russia made a previous attempt to extend its jurisdiction over the Arctic 5 years ago, but the more recent move is regarded as a more serious attempt by Russia.
Russia seeks UN approval on Arctic oil grab
So if Russia and Canada start duking it out for the oil, should the U.S. help out our "allie"? I think that we should take the way of peace and stay neutral.:D

Despite the fact that their leaders are often corrupt and evil people who use the military for nefarious purposes, those men and women who are willing put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms should never be belittled.

Before we go deciding who is our "ally", let us not forget the millions of Russians who died in WWII, protecting their, and our, freedom. Throughout our history, with the notable exception of the Cold War period, Russia has been our ally more often than not. The fact that our national interests sometimes differ makes them no less of a friend and ally.
No disrespect intended to any Canucks in the audience. Just trying to make a point, eh.

This has to be mighty tempting to Russia, not only will it provide resources, but a lot of Russians need jobs right now.
Anyways, the US is way to over extended to do anything. I love Canada, they are our allies (as are Russia) but they gotta figure this out.
The rest of the world will object, its gonna be weird to see how they are gonna play this. They have been acting funky lately, Putin is grabbing alot of power. As for the US, well right now we don't have the right to say shit... unfortantly. I voted against that asshole in office now... lot of good that did.

this is happening for the same reasons that we are in iraq.
as we progress into the future with increased demand on a finite resource, conflict is inevitable. the next few decades will see many struggles over energy resources (oil) and after that water and food. all within our lifetimes.
if you don't think Iraq is about oil, you need to get your head out of FOX.
