NY university urged to cancel Ahmadinejad speech
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Columbia University was urged on Thursday to withdraw a speaking invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will be in New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly.
New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn wrote to the university urging them to cancel Ahmadinejad's planned speech
on Monday, which is part of a forum of world leaders.
"Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier," she wrote.
New York police said on Wednesday that Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be wiped off the map, had been denied his request to visit the World Trade Center site of the September 11 attacks.
Ahmadinejad said on Thursday he was "amazed" by the reaction to his proposed visit to Ground Zero and he would try to go "if we have the time and the conditions are conducive."
Asked in an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes if he would press his request, he said that if local officials could not make the necessary arrangements, "I won't insist."
CBS released extracts of the interview in advance of Sunday when it will be broadcast in full.
Quinn said universities should be a forum for a healthy exchange of differing ideas, but that there were limits.
"An exchange of ideas should not include state sponsored terrorism and hate speech. He can say whatever he wants on any street corner, but should not be given center stage at one of New York's most prestigious centers of higher education."

McCain Suggests Physical Force to Prevent Ahmadinejad From Visiting World Trade Center Site
Thursday, September 20,2007
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should be physically prevented from visiting Ground Zero should he attempt to go to the "sacred" site where the World Trade Center once stood, Arizona Sen. John McCain joked Thursday.
"I think the president of Iran should be physically restrained if necessary," a laughing McCain told radio host Shawn Wasson. "I hope it doesn't come to that but we're not going to have that kind of desecration of what is sacred ground. Obviously, it is a propaganda ploy on his part, and if we allowed him to do it it would just embolden his followers and give him the publicity he seeks."

I believe he should be able to go. He might be a notorious Middle East icon, but he is a leader of a country and insists to make his own dedication to the American People, whether it be peaceful or insulting, it should be acknowledged.

I FUCKING HATE THIS COUNTRY!!!
When I was a child I honestly believed that America was the greatest nation on earth. Damn I wish I could be that naive again.
The President of a sovereign nation is visiting us and what do we do but treat him like a terrorist because we don't agree what what he has to say. I'm relatively sure that the students at NYU are grown up enough to listen to him and differentiate between radical hate speech and worthwhile information for themselves.
And as far as not allowing him near Ground Zero, thats strikes me as nothing but plain intolerance. What do they think he's going to do? Strap a bomb to himself and blow up what is basically a vacant lot? Nothing could be more unlikely.
I hate the fact that the majority of Americans don't even realize that Iranians are Persian and not Arab. Our government does nothing but feed us propaganda and our citizens don't make the slightest attempt to Educate themselves.
Time to prepare for the flame-war to come.

Oh cmon, I'm as far left as they come but even I can see Ahmadenijad is an asshole and a crazy one at that.
I don't want his ass having nukes but I don't want another mismanaged war run by the republicunts. If we didn't botch up Iraq so bad I would probably support a war with Iran. But we really have lost all credibility with the world on this one.
It's like, now's the time to stop the REAL bad guy who is TRYING to get WMD'S but we can't because we've already used that line and look where it's got us.
Shame really, because a nuclear Iran is NOT good. They are currently arming and training terrorists and supplying them with weapons in Iraq now, do you really want them to toss some crazy towel heads a nuke and say go have fun?
Blehh.

I totally agree with you dude. God, I was so naive. I got into a HUGE argument with someone in class today about America. Sometimes its ridiculous how ignorant some people can be. I understand why we would be hesitant, but at the same time that is incredibly racist and pretty much asshole-ish.

Guys, come on.
It's clear cut the Iranians are in Iraq ARMING and training the very same people who flew planes into those buildings, terrorists. And you want to let this guy show his "respects" to ground zero?
How about you show your respects and stop meddling in Iraq and stop harming our troops, asshole.
I know its popular to hop on the "America sucks" bandwagon and blame everything on it but let's be real here, the guy is just looking for more publicity and to make himself out to be the victim of American aggression when and if the time comes to take his ass out cuz he won't stop with his nuclear program.
What I find appalling and disturbing here is the people who actually WANT to let this man into NYC to ground zero. I mean come on guys, don't let your disdain for current American foreign policy/this administration cloud your judgement here.

God damn P4b, first the thing about him laying the wreath and now this. How can you claim to a supporter of your beloved democratic nation of free speach then turn around and ban your opponent from speaking because he's an "assclown". The government (and Glenn Beck/Bill O'Riley) keep telling us he's this maniacle monster bent on the destruction of planet Earth. When you make an accusation like that then say "oh but you can't hear his side of it, just believe us", the bullshit propoganda berometer is off the charts. Doesn't that seem at all fishy to you? If the guy really is who they say he is, we have nothing to fear except maybe having some cross-political/cultural understanding. And believe me that scares the government, the people are only useful when ignorant; only considering the opinions of their divinely-appointed rulers.
Free speech, as long as it's the right speech.

You are obviously getting your information from the wrong sources. The men we're fighting in Iraq aren't the men who flew planes into our building. They are men who think they're doing the right thing and defending their country being led by the men who flew planes into our building. We attacked the wrong country for 9/11. The post invasion investigation proved that Iraq was free of terrorist before the invasion. But like a self fulfilling prophecy the destabilization of the country opened the doors for terrorism to infect it. We made Iraq the terrorist state it is right now.
I'm not on the "America sucks bandwagon." America actually sucks. Sure we're still wealthy and powerful but we are complete bastards run by a moron who dreams of being a facist dictator. We can't control other countries. We have a nuclear program so who are we to tell other nation what they can and cannot do.
I really hoestly don't understand the reasoning behind keeping him away from Ground Zero. Could you please explain it to me because it makes no sense to me. A great tragedy occured there that he had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with. Why then can't he pay his respects. He may hate America but even he can appreciate the great loss of life that occured on that site.
You guys need to start thinking about how you can make the world better and stop concentrating on how to fuck other people over.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
-
NY university urged to cancel Ahmadinejad speech
First of all, freedom of speech is a right enjoyed by American citizens, period. Anyone not fitting that criterea should first make sure that it is a freedom which is also enjoyed by every citizen of their country. As a matter of practice, we generally afford free speech to those world leaders who allow their populace the same privilege.
Think about that before you go whining about denying Ahmadinejad "free speech".
Secondly, as host of the United Nations, we have an obligation to allow politicians from all countries, who have legitimate business at the UN, to enter the US for the sole purpose of going to the UN. For that reason, we allow many people into the US that we wouldn't otherwise. However, this doesn't include Disneyland, the WTC or even the dirtiest, skankiest public toilet in Manhatten.
And lastly, where the fuck are our security agencies? Are they down in the vault visiting their balls? If Ahmadinejad wants to travel around NYC without any US security, it's the perfect opportunity to assassinate the SOB. So do it!!! Get it over with!!! Blow the bastard up and blame it on Arab terrorists. Problem solved.

Disagreement on one issue should not preclude discussion on all issues. This is the leader of a country, and if we're deciding upon something so important as going to war with him, we should know who it is we're attacking. Why should we believe the government's propoganda about Iran's president if we're not even allowed to hear his side of it? It's like holding a murder trial and only allowing the prosecution to speak.
Besides, our tax dollars go to the University and the education therein. Ahmadinejad isn't a professor, he's a guest speaker, and whether or not you agree with him hearing the opponents side is education.
Quote:

I agree on that because some stupid-ass racist hick has no place in a university. It's quite a different matter, though, when it's the leader of a nation we may go to war with. My point through this analogy was based on my belief that even KKK members should be allowed to speak their mind in general, not necessarily in a University. Ahmadinejad is being blocked left right and center wherever he tries to speak.
Both Hussein and Ahmadinejad challenged George Bush to public debate as well. Doesn't say much about your president when he's too afraid to take them on in the public eye and allow the public to hear something other than one adminstration preaching. I would have even been happy to have some other top offical debate them, seeing as George isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to thinking on his feet.

The freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution are guaranteed only to American citizens. If other peoples want these same fundamental rights, they need to get off their lazy, primitive asses and secure them for themselves.
Iranians do not have freedom of speech. To afford their president freedom of speech, when he will not give the same right to the people he governs, is hypocritical and stupid.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about some meaningless and unenforcable "Universal Declaration of Human Rights".
We are governed by one document, the U.S. Constitution. Our Constitution supercedes any other document ever written by man.
If the other people of the world want the same protections, they have to earn them. I hate to sound trite, but freedom isn't free. It is neither our responsibility, nor our right, to tell other people how to live.
Ahmadinejad has made it quite clear that he is an enemy of the United States. The only right he has in this country is to have his body returned home in a timely manner.

I guess from a largely American populated audience I shouldn't be surprised at the amount of nationalism, ignorance, and rudeness on these forums. People who claim to be 'far left' yet say they *may* support a war with Iran based on the same bullshit investigations that provided "evidence" about Saddam's WMD? I find it interesting people here call themselves liberals and 'far left' as long as it only applies to their lifestyle and past-times. Not with any sense of world politics or critical thought.
Buying into the "insane and stupid middle eastern" media spins!? While smoking the hash freely that comes out of some of these countries? You realize the hypocrisy that unless your shit is all homegrown you are very likely supporting some 'terrorist' regime with your pot dollars? Of course Walmart and McDonalds also through corporate ties support plenty of terrorist regimes (like the USA government).
What gets me is all the conservative wankers on these forums who don't realize their favorite past time was very close to being decriminalized in the mid-90s, and the current Drug and Terrorism Czars appointed by Bush have been working very hard to link the two issues and therefore further clamp down on your legal enjoyment of soft drugs. Makes ya wonder where Bush gets his blow from, doesn't it? Contra friends?
It amazes me people here smoke weed. Most seem more like coors light types. Take a look at your great Constitution. Yearly your rights have been eroded to the point of being spoon fed acceptable behavior and thought by the usual dumb-ass Anglo media corporations (and yeah I am white, and American). Don't buy into them. They just want you to buy shit you don't need to fund their terrorist activities.
Dictators have no rights? We've afforded GW Bush and his nazi cronie buddies enough. The president of Iran is in essence no more of a thug than GW, Dick, the complicit generals, and the joint chiefs running this show...
And by the way, the *real* chance of Iran funding religious militant IRAQ death squads of any faction is about as likely as Osama and Hussein having teamed up together. These are not all the same religion, race, or ethnicity. Most middle-eastern neighbors hate each other far more than they do us. Which is why we should have kept our fucking noses out of their world. And Al Quaeda gets most of its money from Afghan, Pak, and Saudi sources... It has little or nothing to do with Iraqi and Iranian industry.

HOW CAN YOU NOT BELIEVE IN UNIVERSAL RIGHTS?
why is america, the final solution... ?
HTD - What I believe in is the sovereignty of nations and the rights of various people to govern themselves as they see fit.
I do believe that there are some rights which should be allowed to all people on the earth. However, these people have to take responsibility for their own lives and their own governments. It is not up to the USA to police the world under the guise of "liberating" people.
We liberated the Iraqis and the result was anarchy. The only thing proved by liberating Iraq is that the Iraqis are too uncivilized to govern themselves. So put the monkeys back in their cages for a few generations and see if they evolve enough to join the civilized world. If not, they need to be ruled by a tyrant.
We tried to "liberate" Vietnam. I can't help but wonder if the two million Vietnamese we killed in that conflict felt "liberated". Twenty years after the Vietnamese soundly kicked our ass, their society and government have evolved into a pretty good system.
Try to understand my reasoning about Ahmadinejad speaking at the WTC site, The US government has shown some class by allowing him to enter the US to attend the UN. However, this does not mean that he should then be granted the status of a visiting dignatary. It should be made clear that he is persona non grata in the USA, period. Since Ahmadinjad has unfettered access to the world media, it is specious at best to argue that we are somehow interfering with his "freedom of speech".
Another point I am trying to make is that anyone who deprives others of their god-given rights, automatically forfeits their own rights.
And finally, for years the Bush cabal has been bashing Ahmadinejad and trying to fabricate a reason for us to go to war with Iran. Well, now Ahmajinedad wants to stroll unprotected through the streets of NYC. If he is such an evil little bastard, if he is in fact a threat to our country, use this opportunity and assassinate him. Otherwise, Bush, shut the fuck up about Iran!
(Obviously there wouldn't be any trillion dollar expenditure to trickle down to the select few who profit from neo-con wars, so this inexpensive solution would never even be considered.)
BTW - We may never agree on this, but I do appreciate debating the issue without resorting to name calling. Rep to ya for that!
