What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
They could tap in at your outside connection. Just slip a device inbetween the connections and they can get your data using a sniffer.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
where have you been the government does not need a reson for taping anything and we are constantly being monitored. Get used to it main we will never have privacy again.............cool name does it mean seller???

don't they already, wasn't that what the big deal was about the secret NSA rooms in the SF area, holding all the content and requests from such, here is the wired article, crazy stuff... but even if they are getting and processing it all, think about all the trash web surfing makes for 20 million people, good luck finding anything good in that haystack.....

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
I thought common knowledge was just phone taps. I've never heard on new or any other source about it.
Vendico is Latin for "Avenger". At least that's what I looked up.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
The ISP logs all data, so it technically is tapped.
BUT, who is going to spend years to read over those logs? nobody. Unless you're accused of doing something illegal online (child predators, planned terror attacks, mass drug sales, money laundering, etc), and I don't mean piracy. You shouldn't worry.

what does it really matter? you got something BIG to hide, don't post about it... jesus is it really that hard? fuck, the first rule of growing is TELL NO ONE...
if you go blabbing about something big enough for the govt. to take intrest in, in the first place, you deserve to get caught.
KEEP YOUR LIPS SHUT! YOU DON'T LOOK COOL OR SPECIAL BY BLABBING, ALL YOU DO IS INCRIMINATE YOURSELF!

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
The government currently monitors our internet activities . This is nothing new , I am surprised that anybody would ask the question what if since its been going on for quite some time . There is a massive super computer in britain that is set up to monitor internet activities . Since the war started it has become even worse .
They most certainly monitor us , but in spite of what some people might think , we just dont matter enough to them for them to take any action ....
The people who do matter are already in jail and are not speaking to us .
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
I thought there were like keyword triggers that flagged the monitoring systems or something like that...dunno I was high when I was reading about it LOL...

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
as of Goerge w Bush the word privacy has been basically removed from the english vocabulary, our goverment is good, but they are fucking fuckers
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
What the government is doing is illegal. They must have a warrant to do a tap or to get ISP records.
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
I'm sure I'm being watched by the gov. I have a habit of looking up controversial topics, and digging to find things on the internet most would frown upon... I used to have the documents for how to make a pipe bomb simply because I stumbled across them on a page before the FBI shut it down.
EDIT: I would never put those plans to use to make one and cause harm, I just thought they were interesting to read through.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
If anything of mine was tapped i'd have been arrested years ago - and i'd still be in prison.
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
I'd tap that... TWO times...

lol. The government is not god. The government is a legal entity compromised by people.
See, the government doesn't collect taxes for nothing. They have to pay for these people. The cost of one analyst to interpret it, overhead costs, which includes the IT team monitoring servers.....I'd imagine it to be 50-60/hr worth of labor & material costs.
Sure, there out there monitoring, but they can't monitor everyone. It's fiscally impossible.

Nothing is stopping anyone, and we have the Patriot Act to thank, or rather 9/11 I guess. I've been doing a lot of research about the whole attack, and I have found that there still isn't really a credible explanation for Building 7, molten metal, or the presence of sulphur and thermite found on one of the beams. Steven Jones, a physics professor from BYU, is still trying to do the tests to find out how many beams he found it on to see if it was a big deal, but unfortunately, its pretty impossible to get a hold of any of materials anymore. Also, if a airliner jet really DID hit the Pentagon, why not release the tape and prove it? I don't believe we'll ever have the answer to any of those questions, and will be forced to accept the official answer, but I think the Project for the New American Century is well on its way to becoming a reality. Read all about it:

i really dont give a fuck. im a law abiding citizen (probably one of the few on here) and i have nothing to hide from the gov't, so what if some jerk off knows what kind of porn i look at or who im sending e-mail to.
if someone knowing what kind of porn i look at is the trade i have to make to make this country safer, well then in my opinion thats a small price to pay.

LOL are you serious? They are spending what $450 billion a year on the military, $50-60/hr are you kidding me, is that it? An algithorem(sp?) is entirely possible and most likely (unless there is a better method) correct. It's what Google was INVENTED ON YEEEAARSSSS ago. No offense seriously, but you obviously are spreading a lot of misinformation in this thread.

Yeah, let's let them keep taking away our privacy. Don't you realize the entire country is slowly become alerted and pissed off? Don't worry, eventually they will make it into your own privacy limits and you will become pissed off too..

But unlike everyone on this thread, I am apparently the only one using an ounce of logic. the 50-60/hr is a conservative estimate. It's probably a lot more.
450 Billion is for the entire military. There are thousands of programs, other than personnel, infrastructure and maintenance costs, which eats up the big part of the budget.
Just using the 50 rate, for one analyst, that's 104000 a year, including overhead costs. How many analysts would it take to monitor 1 million people? They're human, to adequately track, compile and interpret the logs would require quite a bit of time, and cost.
You can pull a load of information, but how much information does one have to sift through?
These are elements no one on this thread has even considered. It's just paranoia for the most part. It would be a fiscal waste to do to monitor 300 million people.....they'd have to pick and choose.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
thcbongman, like I said, it is entirely possible to monitor people tracks online. You act as if there would be someone sitting at a computer watching other people on their computer remotely, of course that is probably impossible. You say you're using logic in your post but I fail to see any logic whatsoever, why would they literally watch what you do lol? That would be ridiculous, it's called technology bro.. think about it like this, they don't need a single person working monitoring this stuff until certain things are triggered through the filtering system. I've already watched videos of current FBI agents showing this technology to a room full of nerds so the point you're trying to make is pretty null.

Well, if "the authorities" can see everything i've written, here and elsewhere, WHY have i not had a visit from the pigs? Coz beleive me, the stuff i talk about with mates is MORE than illegal. They'd nick me instantly - but i've had no shit from anyone.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
First off, I'm not LE, but if I were there is so much info here regarding most of us that it would take less than 4 minutes to track down most who use this site. Everything being equal, most people respond truthfully to questions asked here. "Where do you live, where do you work (job type), "send in a picture of yourself," not to mention my space references ( which sadly does list a person's hometown-most often-), additional things I'm forgetting at the moment. Then ISP's and that sort of thing. My guess is that the gov't have bigger fish to fry than people who smoke.
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
First off, it should be obvious the govt. isn't worried about marijuana growers on the internet... don't think that marijuana is that big of an issue to them. Sure they will use the internet, and they do fight some marijuana crime with it... but be logical.
second, it is obvious that most of the people who hold the power to do so, will trample on any rules, laws, or morals, to continue to prosper.
third, how can you simply think that losing your rights makes you safer? do you really think the public can't protect itself? do you feel unable to protect yourself? please tell me you don't add the terrorist attacks of the past century, or even any major conflict/war, into your thinking...

Yeah, the technology is Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and in the case of hand-written documents Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR). I done testing on it to implement it for a database. I'm sure it's worse than the technology the CIA, and other intelligent agencies possesses, but I know it's far from perfect. Even in that case, it's doesn't recognize what the data is for. Raw data is useless without standardizing and reconciliation. That's why you need an analyst to interpret it.
Now, you are trying to say I said this isn't possible. I never said that. I said it's fiscally impossible to implement such a system to monitor 300 million Americans at once. Keep constant track of them adequately without anyone falling through the cracks. That's frickin' impossible.
Sure, they can collect a shitload of data, but what would exactly a big log of data do without human interpretation? It's not 24 where they type in someones name, and they have all the current information on that person. Data has to be collected, and reconciled consistently. I can imagine in the future, like 20 years from now, a computer would be able to fully reconcile data. Until then, you need analysts, quite a few of them, and they don't come cheap.

What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
I also want to make clear that I do believe in big brother spying on certain groups of people. They definitely have the capability if they established a target. But if they wanted to start a full-on program to do it to all Americans, at this point in time, it's fiscally impossible.
-
What's stopping big brother from tapping our internet connection?
yeah thanks to the patriotic act, and i dont know if im getting paranoid, but latley ive been seeing cameras going up on every intersection, and there not the cameras that take pictures when you run a red light, there the cameras that are constantley recording things.

You know, that is exactly the kind of mindset that is going to get everyone in a lot of trouble. "Oh, I don't care, I don't commit crimes. Except I do smoke weed..."
Seriously, man, we should be able to have our privacy... whether we commit crimes (unless there's a legit warrant) or not. It's part of the original idea of America! How can you not support that? Are you a supporter of tyranny?

Only until they cross your line. some people are just very private and don't want the government knowing anything about them. You're ok with that. But what's your line? Phone calls from big brother every year to check up on you? Visits from big brother every month to make sure you're not lying about you wealth? Cavity searches every day to make sure you're not hiding anything?
Since you're a law abiding citizen, I guess none of this should bother you.

Big Brother already exists, in the UK we have GCHQ which monitors all communications of those who are "suspect".

I see where you're coming from now, and I agree that they (probably) aren't keeping logs of every single internet connection. But I still don't believe it's impossible, all it would take is a law to be passed (illegal one at that) that requires ISP's filter all the information first or something, even if it's a hex dump or wtf ever it is, I don't doubt for a split second that we can have that kind of technology in 2007. BTW, doesn't AT&T send every iPhone owner a stack of papers with all of their text messages listed on them every month? Sounds pretty identical to me.

We should all come together and make an island out of pop bottles and fish-net, like that one guy did on 'Ripley's Believe it or not...'. 'Course, not sure how that island would hold up to tropical weather and such without being attached to some weed-hating mainland.
Kinda sucks that governments and parliaments exists, neo-lithic men and women didn't have to worry about this kind of crap, just about other people and such stealing their goods... this is one white guy starting to see what those rastafarians are calling 'babylon'.
