rubbermade setup high temps

Alright so I decided to start growing and that the rubbermade setup looked good. Its setup with 10 walmart cfl's (1350 lumens I think) it has two intake fans and one exhaust fan at the top. The exhaust fan is a 6" inline duct fan attached to some of that flex duct stuff which is attached to my homemade carbon filter.

I haven't started growing any plants yet because I cant get the temp down. It averages 100 degrees and I cant figure out why. I feel bad I spent all this money and it dont work but I just cant see why its the same as everyone else's except mine has 2 intakes. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm not hip to the Rubermaid style of growning, but i'd bet you just have too many lights in too small of a place. Why not try to unscrew a few until you get it to where you want it temp wise, then if you are looking for an exact amount of lumms, add bigger lights.

I could be wrong, but 10 just seems like a lot.

your probobly right how many "lumms" should I have for 2 plants?

I'm not very experienced though.

those 6" fans that you get ant the depot are booster fans not real good by themselves.
is the 6" fan a 250 cfm? if so maybe go with another or go the 8" 500cfm
how big are your intake holes? are they passive or forced?
also try to put fan blowing cool air up onto the lights

Get rid of the scrubber and run it for a while -n- watch the temps drop .
Can't put any kind of a load on an inductor fan w/o seriously impeeding it's performance .

hey there, I ran a rubbermaid for about 3 months, before upgrading.

I found that the GE CFLs are much hotter then some of the other brands at the same K rating (HomeDepot, NVision is almost 5 degrees cooler). Also the 4" and 6" inlines are better for exhaust rather then air intake. I ended up having a honeywell fan blowing the air into the box from outside, coupled down to fit into a 7" hole. On the other side I had a 4" inline pulling the air out. This worked for a while, but near the end I had to add a 5" cpu fan to the light hood to pull the hot air out faster. Its a tough balancing act getting the temps down, while not blowing the hell out of your plants. I also had a air blocker in front of the 6" honeywell that moved the air to the top. You should at max, have 6-8 lights in there, I ended up with 6 CFLs on 2 trees of three and then 2 CFL tubes to buffer out the lights. keep up the rubbermaid work, its a great starting point, but also if you have the room and means, I'm loving my new 4lx4hx2l cabinet, and so are the plants....

thanks for all the replies so far guys great help. If I run it with the scrubber off then it drops alot. The intakes are not passive (I was wondering if this mattered) they are cheap desk fans caulked into holes in the side. The exhaust doesnt seem to be powerful enough I will probably just run it with no scrubber till flowering. During flowering my plan is to have the 12 hours of light during the night with the scrubber off and some incense lit. Then the 12 hours of dark during daytime with the scrubber on. I dont really see any other solution because to fix this properly id need a really nice inline duct fan and thats not gonna happen cuz im broke....I guess we will see how it goes.

I would post pics but I dont know how to attach them. I will be starting soon and will probably make a log.

So far ive spent alot on this build (ive messed up multiple times...) but if all else fails I have a cloning station :p.

Has you can read in the rubbermaid tutorial :

"The active outtake must be larger than the passive intake or you will not have any 'negative pressure' (airflow) through the box."

Hope you check that !

i havnt read any of the other posts but your problem is you have 2 intake fans... get rid of both intake fans entirely, if its still too hot patch one intake hole up. if it is still to hot, add an exhaust.

Sound advice. No need for intake fans, as exhaust fans will force air in from intake hole(s). Placing intake hole close to an a/c register may help, too. Exhausting the heat is your main concern. Would patch one of the intake holes, (couple of layers of duct tape?) and add one of the fans for exhaust, as high up in the cabinet as possible. (heat rises) Keep in mind the light leak issues.

Are you that worried about a potential ordor problem? You said you are only growing 2 plants, it may not even be an issue.

I would say leave the scrubber off until flowering. Even then, there might not be a gigantically noticeable smell

Also, how do you plan on keeping incense burning for 12 hours, 8 of which you will likely be asleep? alarm clock? fire hazard?

Note: Even if you accomplished the above feat, you would likely doom yourself to lung cancer. Buddhist temples, where incense is burned almost constantly, show a 300% increase in lung cancer rates.

I'm not at all sure of his numbers, but the info is basically correct. The soot released by some incense and candles can be pretty toxic. Once Amber (the wife) got cancer the first time, we quit using candles, Nag Champa, and those plug-in air fresheners that warm the perfume. Had read that some of the burned/heated ingredients can create a hazardous soot. (the bathroom still gets the spray, tho)
