I read somewhere that holding smoke in doesn't make a difference - all THC is absorped almost immediately. Is this true? Because it's a lot easier on the lungs to just exhale normally and not try to hold it in.

I don't think that's true because when you ghost you hold it in till there is no smoke, but that could just be the smoke and not the THC.
I personally don't really hold it at all. I tend to smoke very casually and still get very very high from the same amount as my smoking buddy.
yes its true. you get most of the THC (think like 95%) in the first 3 secs of holding it in
i always get much much higher when i hold em in, i dont think that stuff about the thc being absorbed in like 1 second is true

I and many others on the boards believe THC is absorbed almost instantly into the lungs, holding it only promotes the chances of bad tings happening IMO. However others will disagree.
i normally hold the smoke in for about 3-5 seconds, but sometimes when im out at concerts or in public i ghost hit it so people cant smell it or see it
but really i cant tell much a difference in the highs
take some ghost hits and ull tell a diff.
hit it hard as hell and to the point when u breathe out theres nothin comin back out and youll tell a difference

When you inhale smoke the cappilaries in the alveoli that normaly absorb oxygen constrict to keep out the harmful particles. This happens in about 3 seconds.
I have a moderate position. It might be true that most of the thc is absorbed in a couple of seconds (but where the figures come from, I don't know. What scientist is going to do a study on that? I've never seen an article, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist). But it seems to me that there are other active cannabinoids (cbn, cbd,etc.) that linger in the smoke after the immediate puff.
Why else would hotboxing (clambaking) your car have any efficacy? Or re-inhaling your first hit by means of a balloon? I only do that in times of famine just because it's added stress on the lungs and your body builds up tolerance to it. Maybe it all varies from person to person
I will say it is important to always blow out some visible exhaust. Absorbing all the smoke isn't worth doing; you'll only create more work for your lungs and have phlegm
I hold my smoke for a long time and I do it cuz it gives me an enjoyable headrush. I think it does get you higher.
Or it's a placebo. It tends to be easier to convince yourself that you're higher than what the substance is chemically allowing, when you're high. But I guess in that respect you're getting higher, except it's more of you just tricking yourself.Quote:

I can assure you that there is hardly any difference in the high between ghosting it and exhaling within a couple seconds. Maybe you'll get a fuzzy foreskin, er... I mean forehead, as more toxins would be abosrbed. But that's about all :).
The idea that you have to hold it in for 10 seconds or more is a myth, and unless you want to do more harm than is needed, why do it?
When I first started I would hold it in for about 10 seconds. And to be honest, after realizing that one does not need to hold it in for so long, I've had much more clean-feeling highs. In other words, much more enjoyable. Plus, you get a better after-taste of the herb (given that the aftertaste is good, which it usually is if it is well-cured - of course, that is not for all strains. Some strains have some weird and gross aftertastes! But don't gip yourself out of the awesome aftertaste of that Strawberry Cough, baby!).
