Use rockwool cubes or netpots w/ clay pebbles (hydroton). These are the easiest ways, especially for beginners.
He has the baskets and the Hydroton, but he said he's not sure if Hydroton is a stable enough medium to support a seedling.
u need the rocwool or rapid rooters then once the roots show u put them into the hydroton
Would it be possible to put the seeds in a smaller rockwool cube and then put that inside the Hydroton in the basket? So essentially, the rockwool is like an inner core inside the surround hydroton? Hopefully that makes sense to someone.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but yes. You want to do exactly that. If you put them in the smaller rockwool cubes you add that inside the Hyroton basket once the roots show because you are not going to want to seperate the rockwool from the roots. Even if you were transplating them to soil you would keep them in the rockwool.
What my friend wants to know is if you can put the smaller rock wool cubes straight into the hydroton right after you put the cracked seed on them, without letting the roots show first. The only reason is that he is using the same E&F system for the whole grow so basically all he has to do is switch the lights from 18/6 to 12/12.
If this isn't possible, whats the best way to get the plant to actually sprout out of the rockwool enough to put the cube into the hydroton?
Bumping this. Anyone?

well u could but the light needs to be close enough they don't stretch or burn them the best way is to have a seedling dome with starter moss peat plugs u can get it at walmart if anything atleast the dome the lil black tray and clear lid put them in that under a couple of cfl's not hard to make a light set up if u don't have one then mist them down where they stay damp and let the dome do all the work pull 1 out ever so often and when u see roots then put into the clay pellets and it sounds like ur still not sure what that means so i'll explain alil better when u go to put the plug with roots showing into the basket u first put a layer of clay balls in the bottom of the basket as far up as u want the plug to be u don't want the plug sittin in water then u put the plug in and u have to hold it in the center as u fill the clay balls in around it for support after the balls are filled in around it u top it off to the top with the clay balls having a root system there is better u can just stick them in but u don't want to much water on them thats why it's better to start out in a dome it's easier to control.what ever u do don't let the water build up on the top of the plugs.
I've read a lot of grow guides, and none of them have covered this. Most I have read talk about putting the starting seedlings in vermiculite, but I don't have vermiculite. I have rockwool cubes. What I am asking is, "Will this work?" If not, is there ANY way to start seedlings in rock wool cubes? And if I can't put them straight into the system, do I just water them normally as if it were soil?Quote:

just germinate the seeds in the rockwool when germinated put the rockwool right down into the hydroton, it will work fine.
yes u start the seedling in the rock wool cube u should first soak the cubes in ph'd water around 5.5ph sum boil them too but soak for 30min or so and then put ur seedling in to the lil hole and water when needed. when u are finished soakin the cubes u give each cube a lil shake as u don't want it drippin wet but damp take that and weigh it or kindda feel how heavy it is and u can tell when it needs to be watered again i don't like rocwool as iv'e noticed it drys out quick so u need to keep an eye on it i was watering mine 2 times a day and if u don't have them in a dome like i said b4 they will dry out alot quickier as the heat from the light will dry them out but if u pick them up and it's real lite u know it needs to be watered just make sure they stay damp.
p.s i felt the same way about askin ? as alot of the people on this site seem to have a ph in arrogance.it's kindda like u know when u meet sumone that acts as if there shit don't stink ."to be blunt" it's kindda like that, and i read everything on here and alot of other places for 2 weeks b4 i asked any ?,
but just like in books that teach, it's like they assume u know everything there talking about, and kindda skip steps in a way. for example i was reading a book on how to forge ur own knifes 1 time, so im readin and it gets to the part where it tells about how to shape the steel and all it said was ok first u need to anneal the steel to make it soft for shaping and then it just went on to the next steps well never working with steel b4 i did'nt know what annealing was so u see things like that are missed when people that write books or on subjects they seem to assume u know what everything is and means.sorry that was along p/s lmao
So if you ask a question and get an answer you don't understand, just ask again. Sooner or later you'll get a straightforward answer like hoghuntr76 gave you. Most people that are taking the time to type an answer to your question aren't doing so to make your life miserable. They are mostly trying to help. You'll catch on to all the terminology and techniques sooner or later. In the mean time, you should try to have at least as much patience with those who are trying to help you, as they are having with you.Quote:

Quite the contrary. I think your answer was right to the point and told him what he needed to know in terms he could understand. :thumbsup:Quote:

No one answered my question directly like hoghuntr did, and I appreciate everyone taking the time to answer me. Responses like "bongerstonerd00d" gave is what I was talking about as far as the rude posts.Quote:
